It's the 4th annual World Goth Day today, 22 May 2013 (5th in total) and, just as we do every year, we thought we'd celebrate by celebrating goths with a few re-posts and as much new goth stuff as we can think of. This is what it's all about, if you don't know... "World Goth Day is exactly what it says on the wrapper-a day where the goth scene gets to celebrate its own being, and an opportunity to make its presence known to the rest of the world. This day falls on 22nd [...]

My Dying Bride The Manuscript Peaceville Records 13 May 2013 by Daniel Cairns Whilst peers like Paradise Lost and Anathema have gone through a litany of musical changes, experimenting with Depeche Mode style electronics and glorious anthemic rock songs, My Dying Bride have mercifully continued to wallow in their Keats-meets-Castlevania misery, writing melodic dirges for [...]

Once shrouded in almost complete mystery, Vår have now emerged from the shadows to present a beautiful, frightening, startling debut. What started as the lo-fi basement project of friends Elias Bender Rønnenfelt and Loke Rahbek has now evolved into a full and completely novel four-piece. The sounds on No One Dances Quite Like My Brothers - which range from rich and evocative to striking and scary- more than speak for themselves, but still, Vår have a habit of hiding behind them. Who are these young men, exactly? Is Vår an Iceage side project? A dark dance duo? Or something else [...]

Facing the Other Way: The Story of 4AD, the first & only book on the legendary UK post punk label will be published in September, and is available for pre-order now . Still operating today , the label was founded in 1979 by Ivo Watts-Russell and Peter Kent, and for much of its classic period (which was quite lengthy) the distinctive artwork by Vaughan Oliver pretty much defined the label. Luckily for us he designed the book cover as well. It's difficult to think about the [...]

A few days ago, the world watched as celebrities, athletes, and public figures donned designer duds and paraded around in the name of “punk.” While I applaud any attempt at mixing high fashion with such a pivotal musical movement, this year’s Vogue -sponsored Met Gala’s “Punk: Chaos to Couture” theme couldn't help but feel silly, like little girls dressing up in mommy’s clothes. Is there anything left of punk when Oscar winners and socialites alike are smearing black eyeliner on their lids and drinking champagne in dresses that cost roughly more than most people will [...]

Lighthouse is one of those bands I wished I would have caught last year when they opened for Light Asylum while I was vacationing in Portland. They certainly capture the essence of Ethereal Goth music as a retrospective analogue snapshot taken with today's digital camera. I admire Photographers that still work with real film. If you have the skill set to work in a darkroom then I have great respect for you. Check out Lighthouse and I promise...that you too will feel something spectacular develop. [...]

Miami band Astari Nite has just released their new single "Pyramids" today. The track is from their forthcoming debut album produced by Steve Thompson who has worked with many big acts such as Guns & Roses, Madonna, Blondie and many others. Digging the tune! It is their most polished tune to date with a dark and gothy sound. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album. For now check out the first single via the soundcloud below and if you like [...]

Best known as the leader and founding member of the British trip-hop group aptly titled "Sneaker Pimps," London/Berlin based Chris Corner recently released his fourth album since 2004 entitled "The Unified Field" under the moniker IAMX. Produced by Adele and The Arctic Monkey's producer, Jim Abbiss, the tracks on "The Unified Field" showcase stunning cinematic musical landscapes that are anything but lackluster. If I had to give a brief explanation to IAMX's sound, I'd say it has a Phantom of the Opera romanticism, that is laced with the brooding swagger [...]

Earlier this month Iamsound released Io Echo ’s debut album ‘Ministry Of Love’, earning a spot on Pitchfork’s Advance list. The record has received moderate reviews, sitting somewhere beyond rock, electronic and industrial with some Asian influences thrown in. The L.A. duo (Ioanna Gika and Leopold Ross) stepped out this week, releasing an interactive video for the title track via Noisey . It’ll have you spinning, clicking and dragging your way through it before long – here . Io Echo – ‘Ministry Of Love’ [...]

The Cure's Robert Smith has expressed his disdain for the "goth" label, but the black-clad singer has remained an icon of gloom despite his protests. "I've always spent more time with a smile on my face than not, but the thing is, I don't write about it," he once insisted . You'd never know it by listening to his music. The Cure's catalogue has been dominated by wistful, lonely, somber themes since the band emerged in the early '80s. The mopey singer's manic, perky side has revealed itself occasionally, but Smith has often failed to hide his [...]

With Raz still over in the US of A, this week Hugh is joined by Tom Doyle . We start off by having a quick chat about Bring Me The Horizon's new album charting at number 3 in the UK albums charts, and what this means (or rather, what it doesn't mean) for UK metal, before getting on with the main topic of this week's podcast: hate-crimes. This week's podcast follows in the wake of the news that Manchester Police will be recording (although not prosecuting) attacks on [...]
One thing that strikes you about Ian McCulloch these days is how much fun he seems to be having. If on tour with his main band Echo and the Bunnymen or hitting the clubs with his old mate Ian Brody to offer up stripped down versions of his songs (review on this site), McCulloch seems to have lightened up and even if he does have that old scowl, this time its more ironic and knowing.
