We've seen Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti a few times and there's a certain excitement in not knowing if the band will make it through an entire set, or if that set will feature songs in formats we'd even recognize. Maybe it was The Fonda, or the new album (aptly titled Mature Themes ), or the fact that DāM-FunK channeled First Avenue/Morris Day and the Time (pretty sure we heard him say his bassist was with Mary Jane Girls?!) as a warm up, but APHG gave one of the best shows we've witnessed. Ernest Zacharevic is a Lithuanian street artist who blends stencils with actual objects into his graffiti. He recently hit the streets of Belgium for several new pieces , including the one of Tin Tin above.

This Thursday at the New Museum : A screening of "Graffiti / Post-Graffiti" (1984) will be followed by a discussion with Patti Astor , Fab 5 Freddy Brathwaite, Lady Pink , Paul Tschinkel , Charlie Ahearn , Futura 2000 and Marc Miller . Here's a clip:

The new Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti album, Mature Themes , is kooky enough to appeal to my only-in-theory love of outsider art, but it's not so far off the deep end that I can't genuinely enjoy it as well. I wrote about Mature Themes for The Tyee . The video for the album standout "Only in My Dreams" is below. What a heartthrob.

Diesel , the apparel brand, is bringing their streetwear brand 55DSL to India. 55DSL was first launched as Diesel's experimental spin-off, and soon took up its own identity as a youth brand that bridges urban culture and fashion. The brand launches on September 19, and Diesel is holding a three-day-long event at Palladium and High Street Phoenix, Mumbai, from September 19 to 21, from 11.30am to 7.30pm, showcasing international street culture including graffiti, beatboxing and b-boying. Here's another great bit of street art that's popped up in Manchester's Stevenson Square. For those of you who read my earlier post regarding an Anthony Hopkins portrait that appeared in the Northern Quarter recently, this new Amy Winehouse portrait is on the flipside of the same wall: Once again the portrait is designed by brilliant French-Manc artist Akse .

Here's an item I neglected to include in last weeks post about upcoming Art/Music related events - The Fun Gallery, run by Patti Astor, was probably ground zero for the explosion of art and galleries in the early-80's East Village. Opened in 1981, Astor was responsible for some of the first, if not the first exposure on a gallery level for such artists as Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, Fab Five Freddy, Futura 2000, Lee Quinones, Keith Haring, and many others.
