Frank Yang It's not quite a French invasion, but the success of acts like Phoenix and Daft Punk in North America - and to a lesser degree M83 - certainly made the idea of bands hailing from France making inroads over here a plausible idea, not something you could have said a few years ago. Seeking to be part of this wave are Franco-Finnish duo The Dø , whose debut album A Mouthful was a hit in France when it was released in 2008. [...]
'Stalinesque' by Grammatics by seaninsound Thanks to the good folks over at Drowned in Sound, here is the first track from the wonderful Grammatics ' farewell EP, 'KRUPT'. They weren't lying when they said they'd saved the best for last, if this is anything to go by. The EP is due to surface soon; details as follows: Stalinesque Cedars-Sinai [...]

A few weeks ago we bought you the first part of our exclusive acoustic session with the soon-to-be-no-more Grammatics ( Krupt ; here ). It was a genuine pleasure to sit in a little room with them while they played for us. Both of the songs they performed were equally lovely and it only made the news of their departure that much sadder. As a lovely treat for the weekend we can now bring you part two of the bands Top Deck session. As well as new song Krupt the band also [...]

So here it is then; the brand spanking new GoldFlakePaint. We thought it was about time for a relaunch and to help celebrate our swanky new site we've got an incredible gift for you in the shape of an exclusive acoustic performance from one of the best British bands of the last few years; Grammatics. To say we were upset last month, when the band announced they were to split, is something of an understatement. Their debut, self-titled, record has barely left our stereo since its release at the beginning of last year and we were eagerly awaiting it's [...]

This year we have featured Club Smith on numerous occasions ( "Lament" , "The Green Room" ,) we as a collective here at 1FTP feel they are heading for great things. Now we bring you a brief but brilliant incite into how the band tics. Straight off the back of the release of "The Process EP". Club Smith are Vijay on drums, Lee on bass, Neil on keys & samples, Sam on Vocals & guitar. Sam from the band recently took some time out to answer a few questions. here they are: (One For The [...]

GoldFlakePaint is sad to report that Leeds four-piece Grammatics have decided to call it a day. The band posted a statement on their blog yesterday explainging the decision, which you can read below. There's not a lot you can say when one of your favourite bands splits up; not [...]

Words: Gareth O'Malley Three words accurately sum up my reaction to the news that Leeds' Grammatics are splitting. Those three words are: Absolutely. Fucking. Devastated. Does it come as a surprise? Well, yes and no. We saw the writing on the wall after Emilia Ergin left last November (to be replaced by Lindsay Wilson), but not for a second did I anticipate anything like this. Their talented original drummer Dominic Howard had left by that point too (replaced by James Field). Then, it all got a bit ominous, with the group [...]

Frank Yang Full writeup of the night over here . Grammatics - Leeds chamber/prog-rock quartet released their self-titled debut last year and are working on album number two. Spinner has an interview. Frank Yang While most festivals save their biggest names for the final night, recent years have seen SxSW kind of stagger to the finish line. Everyone is exhausted, bands want to get the hell out of town ASAP and most just want it to all be over. There was supposed to be an exception to this rule in the Big Star show at Antone's, but with the tragic passing of Alex Chilton earlier this week, that showcase became a tribute concert and if possible, an even bigger draw. So much so that festival [...]

This is it, 2STEPSFORWARD4STEPSBACK's Top 10 Albums of 2009. These are the ten records that defined my year, truly. They were there through it all, soundtracking the highs and lows of my 18th year. Personally I think it's been an outstanding year for music. It's genuinely life-affirming to see such innovative talent still emerging despite the general public still buying rubbish, despite the money being less and less, despite the leaks, the ringtones, and the X Factor. Great music will never die. I hope you've enjoyed reading. [...]

So I lied. The Noah And The Whale top 5 will not be up today (tomorrow for sure, I promise!) Nonetheless, I have a very attractive top 5 albums of 2009 list by Owen from Grammatics... I totally agree with Future Of The Left, I am so in love with that album at the moment! 1. Blue Roses: Blue Roses "Doubtful Comforts" sounded like a magical lost classic the first time I heard it. There's plenty more than that particular track to fall in love with across Blue Roses debut, especially power-ballad (!) "I Wish I" which is [...]

Editor's Note: Here at BIYL we like to wing things. There's no master plan for our end of year lists, and frankly I don't even know if I'll be able to make one. But I imagine we'll each be tackling the year separately (and possibly in one collective discussion, we'll see how things go). Mark has decided to kick things off, and breaks down what artists & performances that had the greatest impact on him this year. 2009! What a year for me, musically! I have never been so enthused from January right through the end [...]

The more I listen to Grammatics' remarkable S/T debut , the more I hear Cursive/Tim Kasher's influence on the band. Their non-LP 7" single Double Negative (out since October 26th via Dance To The Radio ) sounds more Cursive inspired than anything the band have ever done; in fact, the other track on the 7" is a cover of Notes In His Pockets by The Good Life (Kasher's other band.) Grammatics: Notes In His Pockets (The Good Life cover) [wicked-cool song] [bonus] The Good [...]
-- And so it begins. The ' statements ', the overblown reactions of " I can't believe your opinion is not of complete parallel to mine! ", the meaningless ranting attempts to find a definitive 'album of the year'. We begin our yearly conclusion in understated form. A select few of the blog's writers volunteered us their top five songs of the year so we dressed each five up in Photoshop and decided to publish them right here, right now. Subjectivity is bliss... ------------- [...]

A couple of weeks back, Leeds-band Grammatics announced (to very little reaction) the departure of their cellist Emilia . We hear about these "mutual parting of ways" every now and then, from Ira Trevisan exiting from C.S.S for " fear of climate change " as well as many other reasons being cited, all inevitably leading to the "musical differences" line. And we all know that, deep inside, all that happened was a bloody bust-up. But never has it been so evident here. To quote [...]

Hallowe'en. 'Tis the season to be dark, ghoulish and scary. It would be easy for me to post a list of top five goth songs or death metal songs, or to be relevant and cater to the taste of the masses, maybe even have run down of favorite songs from the Twilight soundtrack. But I won't. It actually would be easier for me to just produce a list of my favorite noisy songs that have a nice mix of guy and girl vocals (good songs like these are quite the find!). But, [...]

As the line between true Indie bands and the mainstream seems to become more and more blurred. I have recently been kinda shying away from listening to bands I ought to maybe give a little more time to. Traveling down to Cambridge, I wondered if the night ahead would really inspire me, as lately I have been feeling a little gigged out!!! Main support came from one of my favourite bands, Grammatics. Boy have they grown into the bigger stage - Owen Brindley made the vast stage his own as they gradually warmed the crowd. Showcasing tracks from the debut self-titled [...]
