Noise For The Needy is a grassroots group which holds an annual music and arts festival here in Seattle. Each year, a different organization in the beneficiary of the festival; this year, it's the Real Change Empowerment Project. If you're from Seattle, you've seen many low income or homeless folks selling the Real Change newspaper in front of grocery stores, coffee houses or on street corners downtown. Those of our readers from all over probably have seen a similar model in their city as well. Real Change 's Mission is [...]

Download: The Greater Good "The Goodness EP: Instrumentals" Back in 2010 Las Vegas representers Marion Write and DJ Finyl, collectively known as The Perfect Formula, teamed up with RefinedHype to release their "The Goodness EP", and the result was nothing short of pure dope. In the months since the duo has gone back to their original name, The Greater Good, and prepared a brand new package for the real hip-hop heads out there in the form of "The Goodness EP: Instrumentals". You're welcome. "The [...]

Like I've said before, the best thing about this damn internet is how it got me watching videos again. After that whole No Limit " Make 'Em Say Ugh " debacle with the tanks on the basketball court and shit, I don't think I turned the TV on for a few years (worst song ever - I don't even want to hear it). And after that, I still never got the nerve up to check BET or MTV Jams. The prospective was just too depressing. Which is why I'm a huge fan of low-budget indie videos. Sometimes they're [...]

My Dear Friend, John Campos (DJ Toast) and I will be spinning 802s tunes for an amazing cause in Portland this weekend! I always love the trip down to PDX and doing it with great friends always makes it better! The ultimate, modern philanthropists, The Sisters Of Perpetual Indulgence are throwing a party for an amazing cause which is close to the heart of our closest Sister, Sister Helen Baak. From the invite: Dig out your leg warmers, sweater dress and geometric earrings… the Sisters are taking you back to the 802s! Join us at [...]

Via True Panther: A couple of weeks ago the San Francisco Giants defied all odds and expectations and brought THE WORLD SERIES to SF for the first time ever… So we thought we'd join in the celebration and take this opportunity to put a spotlight on the great music scene that is currently marinating there. A late-night idea, some frantic emails and a couple of weeks later we have this great mix of San Francisco musicians (some of whom recorded songs specifically for this compilation) to share with you. Our jubilation [...]

Amadeus is one of those cats who releases more mixtapes and albums that I can keep up with. In the past year alone he dropped like three discs - including a group project with Zombie Death Squad - and he tells me that he has like three more in the can. If you don't know Amadeus, his shit is tough as hell with a slight Wu-Tang edge for sure. This is one of his first discs - recorded something like seven years ago. 'Bout to give it a whirl myself... Every night, when I get home from reporting facts, I poison the Internet with innuendo on a Boston-based hip-hop blog called jumptheturnstyle.com . It's great fun, even though our active commenters are a venomous mix of keyboard-bound cowards and legitimate criminals. But they have one prejudice that rolls me sour, in that they almost unanimously reject Boston hip-hop. Like its predecessor, which yielded some of the first radio singles for Slaine, DL, and Mic Stylz, A Boston State of Mind Vol. 2 counters [...]

A few weeks ago, Boston MC Benny Blanco brought his homeboy J the S a flyer for a sketchy wrestling match in Long Island the next day. On the bill was 55-year-old pugilist legend Jake "The Snake" Roberts, who still fights, and on whom Mickey Rourke's tragic protagonist in The Wrestler was largely modeled. J the S — who until recently was known to hip-hop fans as Jake the Snake — knew what had to be done. The next morning he rolled east on the Long Island Expressway. [...]

Any day now I'm dropping a list of 25 hip-hop acts (with links and pics) that I expect will kick tremendous ass at the South by SouthWest (SXSW) music festival in Austin next week. That may sound like overkill, but there will literally be thousands of rappers down there, so I'm just trying to help point people in the right direction. For those who can't make it down there, Trees and I will be reporting from the front lines. Before that, though, I'll help you get acquainted with some of the artists on my [...]

The lovely kids at PS22 on Staten Island are getting pretty popular these days. As of this morning, the PS22 chorus has received over 15 million hits on their youtube videos - 3 million alone in January of 2010! For those of you who aren't familiar with the chorus and their ambitious instructor, Gregg Breinberg (or Mr. B) I highly recommend a trip over to the PS22 Blog. You'll find all sorts of great stories and videos of performances and rehearsals of some pretty unusual material for 5th graders. I'm talking Björk, Nick Drake, Jay-Z and Nina Simone! [...]
I've been waiting for this video for a minute, ever since we posted up the Greater Good mix tape a couple months back. Hip-hop, fresh food and good smoke...sheeeit, invite me next time fam!
