It's not for fear of getting all but absolutely swept away by Blue Hawaii that we're back extolling the virtues of the Montréal-based duo comprising Agor Cowan and Raphaelle Standell-Preston, for to paraphrase Mykki Blanco everything they touch turns to motherfuckin' gold. And live, whether that aptly be at Club Motherfucker's 10th anniversary celebrations or at last weekend's The Great Escape , is when they really come into their own: they cut loose and positively lacerate the itself sublime Untogether LP of earlier on in the year, only to recompose it [...]

Straight on with day two of The Great Escape and Friday starts with a period of stewing around the lanes drinking excessive coffee and then running to Hove and back to wash away a few of yesterdays ales. Kill or cure, that's the motto with running. A shower later (you'll be glad to know) and I'm at Above Audio awaiting Embers . The quartet come quintet (with the addition of Sophie from PINS on violin) are crammed onto the tiny [...]

If you think I didn't know Lab Coast all that well , another artist I saw at The Great Escape this year about whom I knew very little ended up producing precisely the opposite reaction: I wasn't immediately struck the first couple of times I heard his record, but live on stage he really was captivating. It helps, I suppose, that at the time we arrived to see him he happened to be playing an omnichord, one of those instruments which can make me bypass almost all critical faculties and just file everything it touches under 'awesome'! [...]

These guys are another of the bands I tipped when I wrote my Ones to Watch post for The Great Escape this year. And, a little like Glass Animals before them, I found them good live, but no better than that, which was a little disappointing. Recorded, their tunes are strong and hummable, and the laid back stylishness of their guitar sound has a certain retro swagger to it which I really like. They are an unhurried, confident-sounding band though, and a little like Glass Animals again, I suspect that what makes their recordings [...]

The Hundredth Anniversary weren't officially on the Great Escape bill anywhere, but being a Brighton band they still found somewhere to play anyway. When I made my way out to Brighton Electric Studios - a taxi ride away from the centre - I was very much reminded of the way the Edinburgh Festival seems so very much to be a collection of imported acts put on at great expense for the benefit of an imported audience and the profit of people like Magners. At least from a musical point of view that's seems to be the case anyway, [...]

Here we are again, home from The Great Escape , it sure has come around quickly! Three days of treating our bodies with the littlest respect (copious amounts of concentrated orange juice at breakfast aside) living, eating and breathing live music in Brighton's many venues and bars seems to have taken their toll on the many muso's and punters littering Brighton's streets and my Sunday Twitter feed was an almost universal story of suffering and hangover, back to the beginning of the weekend for this post though.... I arrive in town at around midday to find sky [...]

Ed Harcourt was not, actually, one of the artists I mentioned amongst the five to watch out for I sent to the Hype Machine when they asked, but by the time I actually went to Brighton he was certainly amongst the five artists I was most excited to see. That fact that the gig took place at this church certainly helped matters, and with the interior lighting it was much more impressive on the inside than on the out, and a hell of a lot bigger too. [...]

Saturday begins not so much where Friday left off, as in the excrement of the day's overindulgence as talk of hangovers, hangups, comedowns and all other manner of ill ensures the day can be acutely equated to a more conventional festival malarkey. And Blue Hawaii transpire to be a refreshing tonic to all that inanity, Raphaelle Standell-Preston and Alex "Agor" Cowan putting in an accelerant set on next to no sleep. It begins with perfect respite provided by a gloopy Follow drenched in dark, and the duo sound as though they've come to terms with their live performance [...]

We've been given the task of picking acts which shouldn't be missed and to be perfectly honest, this year's line up doesn't make it easy

Straight on with the second part of my Great Escape 2013 preview - if you landed on this page and want to see the first part - head here and your wish will be granted... Golden Fable - Facebook / goldenfable.com Friday 17th May - 19.15 - Sticky Mikes Frog Bar A band I'm very much looking forward to breaking my live duck with are Golden Fable, the duo [...]

Christ, Lord Live at Criminal Records [Criminal Records, 2013] 4 out of 5 stars Purchase This Album: Amazon I wouldn't call Christ, Lord's music cinematic per se, but I'd argue that it's highly visual much in the same manner a well-written novel can lead an imaginative mind to sight. They're a band rich with details and musical allusions, and every song comes with an inherent sense of built-in storybook drama. Of [...]

"Give Up" is a nicely textured piece from Luxembourg trio Monophona. Listeners with eclectic palettes are sure to appreciate their mix of melodic, psychedelic and post-dub music. Monophona has gigged with the likes of Fink, Daughter, Polica and Sun Glitters, and they will be playing their first UK shows at The Great Escape festival next weekend. Be there. Monophona ( Soundcloud ) Rating 8.2

Official Website: mamacolive.com/thegreatescape 2013 will be my sixth Great Escape , I’ve learnt from being shut out of Metric’s seafront show on a wet, windy evening and now tend to look lower down the festivals billing for my acts. If you plan on seeing a London Grammar or a Chrvches this year, my advice is simple, get there early. Other the next couple of posts I’ve picked out a dozen acts from the 350 odd in the line-up as my “must-see’s”. The Great Escape is a vast, widespread festival with [...]
Hold in Brighton from May 16th to May 18th, The Great Escape is described as “Europe’s leading festival for new music”, no surprise then that Kitsuné is part of it! Our contribution to this amazing festival will take place on Friday May 17th with a special showcase featuring our beloved old school hip-hop diva D E [...]

The Great Escape festival, Brighton (16-18 May '13) // Words: Saam Das I love The Great Escape , the annual Brighton-based festival dedicated to new music. Indeed, after visiting the festival for the third time last May, I commented that it has "yet again proved to be one of the finest multi-venue, city festivals around." A quote that the festival are even using as one of their testimonials alongside the likes of NME and The Times. I hope to be there again [...]

It's a testament to the almighty brawn of this year's The Great Escape billing that our beloved likes of Allah-Las , Darkstar , Roosevelt , Sean Nicholas Savage , and so on and so forth weren't in with even so much as a shout as we concisely round up our essential picks from next month's Brighton shebang. For contrived as it may, and indeed doubtless will sound, the UK's leading metropolitan festival has well and truly outdone itself with its programming for the coming edition. The full line up for it can be encountered here , although [...]
The VPME Having been one of the first UK blogs to write and interview Velvet Two Stripes, tipping them for BBC 6 Music and presenting them with one of our famous "Pipster" awards last year, we are obviously delighted by news of their announcement of their first official UK release. Their 4 track 'Fire EP' is set to drop on 20.5.2013 with the lead track ( somewhat unsurprisingly called 'Fire') sounding edgier than a Swiss Mountain ledge. Sophie's fabulous vocal simply oozes a bluesy uncontrived [...]
