It's been an adventurous weekend. Two birthday parties on back-to-back nights (I remained sober! Give me my 48-hour chip!). Pretty much everyone I know was drunk from 5pm on Friday until, well, they're still drunk right now. And none of them have to work tomorrow so they'll probably keep raging through the night! I just [...]
All it takes is about 30 seconds of the opening track, the awesomely titled "Temple Lurker", on this debut full length from Chicago psych rockers The Great Society Mind Destroyers, to realize these guys are serious psych freeks and are here to drag us into a drugged out sonic stupor of unparalleled proportions. Their initial squall of White Heaven like freak-out had us expecting a nonstop

GSMD | Photo by David J. Hanus Three why-not-take-your-relationship -to-the-next-level reasons to come on down to the Bottle tonight... 1. After seeing Chicago psych fiends The Great Society Mind Destroyers at the very place they play tonight, I can safely say they didn’t choose their name at random. No, GSMD have the power to scramble your beer-soaked mind with few blistering, guitar-fueled jams and some drums beats that sink deeper than a corpse with cement shoes. The band celebrate the release of its new album Spirit Smoke [...]

Oh, what a weekend Chicago has in store for us all. Riot Fest , which technically kicked off yesterday, continues with big, big, big shows around town including DANZIG, Smoking Popes and Weezer. But if you’re not into the insanity of our annual punk-a-thon, look no further than T-Bone at Quenchers, Great Society Mind Destroyers at the Viaduct and a few more fests we think you’d enjoy immensely. You don’t want to find hell with me, mother. So let’s get to it. [...]

The Great Society Mind Destroyers Three going-out-with-a-bang-isn't-us ually-my-style-but-let's-see-w hat-I-can-do-here reasons to read this and then head to the Bottle tonight... 1. If you're like me, then you already know that you dig Great Society Mind Destroyers . I do. If you're not like me, but like music and really like music that is groove oriented but doesn't ask you to dance, you might find yourself digging GSMD. Just, here's the thing, GSMD love to lock in and then freak out over what they've locked in [...]

It’s such a great weekend for festivals in Chicago. We’ve got Taste of Randolph occupying the West Loop with the salivating sounds of British rockers The Heavy and Swervedriver as well as local rockers JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound and The 1900s . Not to mention the three-day birthday bash going on at Saki featuring Great Society Mind Destroyers and much, much more. With so much rock happening there’s really no need to wait. Let’s get on with the show! [...]

APTBS | Photo by Drew Reynolds Three this-is-being-written-before-a ll-the-coffee-has-been-consume d reasons to ignore the lack of focus and just head on over to the Empty Bottle tonight... 1. Let's hear it for loud! New York's A Place To Bury Strangers make music to be heard above the hustle and bustle of New York. The thing is, it's not in the traditional way. Sure, guitars squeal to massive distorted levels but this is pure 802s electronic psych. Specifically, imagine if J Mascis were obsessed with Love and Rockets and wanted [...]
Yet another sign of summer, despite Chicago’s foray into November-like Fall temperatures, is the announcement of the Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival ’s musical lineup. The three-day street festival kicks off Friday, July 29 and ends Sunday, July 31, along North Milwaukee between California and Kimball Avenues in Logan Square. The Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival includes two stages chocked full of local artists, including four of our 11 Chicago Bands to Watch in 2011 . The main stage will be ruled by groovy soul rockers JC Brooks & The Uptown [...]

Trail of Dead | Photo by Audrey Leon Happy Seis de Mayo, muchachos! We've got another beautiful weekend ahead of us, and I'm not even talking about the weather. Although, that is pretty nice, too. Without further ado, the staff at Loud Loop Press present our picks for this weekend's most happening shows including Big Science at Subterranean , . ..And You Will Know us by [...]

March was a bit of a tease. Some days in the 70s, others in the 30s... we are clearly at the border of two seasons. As we prepare for the big spring/summer releases, it is no crime to look to the past for instances of greatness. After all, two artists this month - Nicolas Makelberge [...]

Billowing clouds of smoke, a neon-lit cast of tie-dye colors, and various voodoo references help define The Great Society Mind Destroyers. Chaos is an all-encompassing description once the opening track on the Chicago-based quartet's new album, Spirit Smoke, gets underway. “Temple Lurker” sounds nearly half-ironic in its title; its whirlwind of heavily distorted psych-rock is [...]

Photo Credit: Carrie Musgrave - livebabylive.com So as you're probably aware, last month we revealed our 11 Chicago Bands To Watch In 2011 . One aspect of the list that we think lacked a bit was the audio component. I mean sure, we can tell you about the bands, but we really want you to listen to them. Therefore we proudly present, albeit a few weeks late, The Loud Loop Press 11 Chicago Bands To Watch In 2011 Compilation . Tracks from all the bands on the list, Rabble Rabble [...]

Some you might know and some you might not. Seeing as it’s the beginning of a brand new year, we thought we’d point out some local bands who we think you might want to keep your eye on in 2011. And isn’t it always cool to say you were a fan of popular act back in the day when they were playing for eight people [...]
