There's nothing more frustrating than loving an album by yourself. Such is the case of Gem by U.S. Girls , the product of the Phil Spector produced psychedelic lo fi world of Meghan Remy's mind. It's a powerful journey through weird sounds, reverb laden guitars and girl group melodies that is firmly in my top ten of the year, despite the fact it seems to have slipped mostly unnoticed through the collective musical mind. Man Like Me are a rare breed; they're a band that have gotten to where they are now almost entirely off the back of previous performances. There are very few bands out there at the moment that are where they are now because of a stunning live set but it's that snowball effect that planted Man Like Me on a nationwide tour. Despite not being the biggest fan of Japandroids , their live reputation will always precede them, and as a result I couldn't resist going to see them when the opportunity arrived. Green Door Store is one of the better venues in Brighton as well, and, with the show likely to sell out, the atmosphere promised to be incendiary. There's a certain vastness to Clock Opera 's anthemic big-pop, with its spacious build-up blips and whirling sentimental blops that seems daunting to translate live. Often the meticulous production of such a heavily layered aesthetic can swallow you whole in the comfort of the home, but lick limply at your face when played out live, with subdued beats, muted deliverance and restrained punch. Sunday Service is a promotion run by the delectable Bernie Adamic in Brighton. It's been going for some time now, establishing itself in our seaside city as a staple night out for those who demand to rinse as much fun out of their weekends as possible. Theses days, taking a punt on the well-worn marketing move, where you take a less-is-more attitude to what you allow the public to know and see of your new band, is nothing short of fucking boring. It's more reactionary, rather than revolutionary, seeming as it does to kick against the over-saturation of any subject the Internet chews up and spits out.
