In another life, Zakee Kuduro was a calculus teacher at West Philadelphia High School who dabbled in music and production in his spare time. At the time, his path wasn't entirely clear: "It was too hard for me to put out my obscure sound in Philly," he recalls. "I felt like I wasn't hip-hop enough, I wasn't electronic dance enough, and I wasn't neo-soul or whatever. I found myself in this weird little category." That category being a musician who wanted to work in all of those styles - and more. Call it the product of 14 years spent studying [...]

Breaking out of the Danger Danger scene of Philadelphia, Grandchildren have been on a heavy touring regiment for the past year or so, making trips to New York City quite frequently. The hard work has paid off for the band, as they'll be releasing a debut LP, Everlasting , on Green Owl Records. The album drops on September 28, and the band will be announcing a tour in support soon enough (no dates yet, but we can't wait for them).
As the opening band on a bill of gloomy indie rock (they are on tour with popular press darlings, White Lies) New York's Violens (pronounced Vy-Lenz, phonetics fans) offer a slither of light in the haze of this cavernous club. Clad all in white, they deliver a set of melodic and occasionally ambient indie pop. It's never easy warming a crowd; especially before 20:00 in a central London nightclub, but the early birds are suitably responsive. It's a short set of shimmering, 60s pop tinged indie. Think The Shins or The Lilys in places ; it's just a pity that [...]

As promised, the good folks at Green Owl Records sent me two 73 singles - one from The Very Best and one from The So So Glos. The Very Best topped my 'best of 2008' list and the 73 is the first tactile item I've received from them as their 'album' was technically a mix/mash [...]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =0TUayHxh1tU Violens, "Trance-Like Turn" (Green Owl Records, 2008) Mincing New Romantic-era synths, 60s-pop harmonies, shoegaze guitar theatrics, and good, old fashioned indie-punk grit, Brooklyn's Violens are one of our most beloved discoveries of the year. In fact, we'll just say it now: Violens are the BEST new band of the year, and if their recent three-song EP is any indication, whenever these ex-Lansing-Drieden dudes decide to release a full-length, we'll be there, palms sweating in anticipation. For now, though, we'll take what [...]
