If you see a lot of live music in the Bay Area you certainly have encountered Eran Yarkon. Eran is from Israel but moved here in 1999. The Bay Area live music scene has no fan more dedicated. The guy has his finger on the pulse so to speak. Eran turned me on to Monotonix (from Tel Aviv) and their performances at Treasure Island 2010 and the Rickshaw in January 2011 were truly legendary. Eran is a laid back, friendly guy that seems to know everyone. It should be no surprise (except to himself [...]
I appreciated Todd's recent post: Happy Memories of 2011 . He was spot on about Deerhoof. Though I hadn't seen them in years, I caught their show at SFMOMA and it was crazy good. And like Todd, I'm sick of the top ten. Fuck the top ten. This year pissed me off more than most and that deserves some recognition. My aunt is dying. We assumed she would live to a 100 like her father, but NO - some untreatable cancer has to come along and fuck that up. [...]

Sneaky Pinks Night 2 began with Elvis Christ . A supergroup of sorts, but I couldn't tell ya who's who. There may be a connection to the great Uzi Rash that opened yesterday's bash. Elvis Christ King Lollipop Then the first King appeared! King Lollipop came with a complete set of drumming minstrels. Shannon (of the Clams) played some fine cowbell. Hunx (of the Punx) banged away. The King [...]

Tweet I could barely get out of bed. South Park had me in the zone. Cartman's hand was Jennifer Lopez. Then I thought about KUSF (90.3) and how I hadn't sent them enough money over the years. Now one of my favorite college radio stations is an unending torture of classical music . I thought about Greg Ashley , another local treasure, and how I was late to his last show. I put on my pants. [...]

Dungen by Sarah Morrison Just when you think summer's over, a heat wave comes to L.A. and Waved Out 2 comes to the Echoplex, to hose us down with the reverb-soaked sounds of teenage noise pop, chill wave, surf punk and psych-folk. I didn't know what to expect. The only bands listed on the bill whose names I recognized were the trippy headliners, the Entrance Band and Dungen, who were playing the first show of their US tour. Sponsored in conjunction by the Aquarium Drunkard music blog, KXLU and L.A. RECORD, the all-day event featured an [...]

Greg Ashley - "Requiem Mass - Part I" Oakland studio wizard Greg Ashley just released his latest album on Birdman Records , and it's something of a curve ball after two solo records of psych-folk-pop. Side A of Requiem Mass and Other Experiments is, true to the album's title, an electric requiem mass in four parts featuring contributions from a lengthy supporting cast of talented players. Side B is billed as "a series of sound and music experiments," which Ashley has described [...]

The Ghost Town split itself open for May's First Friday to expose 7 of the bands that call this gallery home. Like some visible man anatomy model of my youth, the mysterious innards were slowly revealed. Brain: I arrived to find long time resident, recording guru and Gris Gris mastermind Greg Ashley playing where the beer machine used to be. Sadly I missed the first few songs, but the ones I did hear were the highlight of the night. [...]

River City Tanlines. ( Courtesy of the artist ) After watching six bands play at our own NPR Music showcase at The Parish , I took a short break from the music. Is that okay? I'm only asking because I actually feel guilty. You walk around 6th Street in Austin during SXSW, or along Red River Road, and you realize that at any given moment you are missing out on seeing hundreds of bands. In every crevice of this festival -- and a little more annoyingly, in the middle [...]

Photos by: Nicole Browner Tape Deck Mountain - "Scantrons" As I walked up Market Street to Cafe du Nord, I could hear these brooding tunes emanating from underground and couldn't help but think how perfectly the music of Tape Deck Mountain fit with the almost vampiric ambiance of du Nord's crimson-soaked lighting and walls. While it was the brooding tunes I heard on my way in, TDM switched things up a bit in their set, playing a few tracks off their Scantrons [...]

Hey, listen - how do you feel about soaring twin-guitar leads? Oh yeah, well how about if they're played by a lefty and a righty, so it's like a mirror image? And the lefty's playing an upside-down Flying V? That do anything for ya? Well, what if there's also ladies singing "ahhhh" in harmony over it all? If that doesn't scratch yer back, then I cannot do anything for you, sir. That's the way the ball bounces, G. Citay's hitting on all cylinders right now, and I can't recommend seeing them enough if [...]

This here is a story of heartbreak, a story of fallen heroes. The Dutchess and the Duke made their way once again into Austin amongst strong praise for their recent release Sunset/Sunrise . Our expectations were high, and we promoted the show as best we could, hoping many would see the greatness that was D&D. Unfortunately, the night fell far short of our expectations, or mine at least. Follow the jump for full review and photos. Openers Fergus and Geronimo were the heroes of the night. They played a [...]
The Duke looked like a rooster up there—he's sung many a song in his day and delivers his tune with confidence. At first listen the songs sound like the regular epidemic going around these days, but these guys are much better at telling the story. It comes naturally for some.
