The Pitch: Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker recently revealed to Q Magazine that they have no more gigs planned after the inaugural S.S. Coachella cruises, and ruled out any new material. Perfect excuse to attend, right? Once the lineup was revealed back in July, I immediately created a Facebook group, adding every friend that expressed the slightest interest in attending. Thankfully I found two that were willing to book the cruise with only four days notice. Pulp people are the best people, after all, and definitely hardcore. I didn't know that I would [...]
Here I am, left to go last once again with my favorite songs of the year. I feel as though I listened to more in 2012 than in any other year, and my musical experience was all the better for it. More music means more candidates, which admittedly makes lists like this one tougher. But [...]
The S.S. Coachella sailed from Fort Lauderdale, FL to Jamaica and back between 12/19 and 12/23, along the way featuring performances from Pulp, Hot Chip, Yeasayer, and many more . Andrew Youssef was on hand to document the cruise for Stereogum. His diary is below. Check out his photos in the gallery. Read More...

Though the FADER does not empirically rank our favorite releases, the year-end battle between album heavyweights rages in our brains like everyone else’s. But we’re talkers, prone to changing our mind and always searching for ... read more

For those who didn't get their Coachella fix this year ( or didn't get tickets to next year's fest ), festival promoter Goldenvoice has a solution: the S.S. Coachella. Departing from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in December, the ship sails to the Bahamas and Jamaica, and while in transit, the cruise will host performances from Pulp, Hot Chip, Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells, Warpaint, El-P, Black Lips, Grimes, Cloud Nothings, and Father John Misty among others. There will also be "unique events," including wine tastings with James Murphy and late night performances. Get the full details on [...]

The rumors were true : In December, The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will launch its very own cruise. In fact, living up to the spirit of the festival's recent expansion , the S.S. Coachella will host two separate cruises: a three-day journey to the Bahamas starting on December 16th and a four-day journey going to Jamaica on December 19th. According to The New York Times , both voyages will take place on a 2,800-person capacity ship called the Celebrity Silhouette, and both will set sail from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. [...]

Oh Sexi Lexi BB... Plz stay the same I hope u don't degenerate into a #zoner That's what I
Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer called out to Ty Segall a couple of times during his band's show at Pitchfork Music Festival Sunday. Segall was playing across the park on another stage. Later, Segall asked the entire audience to yell Dwyer. The joke is that these guys had to compete with each other even though they largely have the same fan base. If you're a fan of both bands (like me), you had to miss part of one performance. I watched the entire set by Thee Oh Sees and ran across Union [...]
At ginormous festivals like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, it's pretty tough to craft a narrative - when there's something like 200 bands playing over a weekend, it's next to impossible to really sew a singular thread through the weekend's performances. Pitchfork Music Festival is much smaller - 45 bands in three days - so, it's a lot easier to derive the daily theme. And while Saturday brought forth another occurrence of Friday's soaking, poncho-industry-fueling rainstorms, Saturday's lineup also featured a few tack-worthy talking points, with Grimes going head to head with Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Flying Lotus and Sleigh Bells catering [...]

Grimes is playing the side stage Saturday night of Pitchfork Music Festival, while Godspeed You! Black Emperor headlines the main-stage area. I'll likely opt for Grimes. The day is short of rock acts but includes a number of interesting options. I intend to get to the fest early enough to see Cloud Nothings , which I'll (unfortunately) have to cut short to catch Lotus Plaza , a side project of Deerhunter guitarist Lockett Pundt. Oddly, Lotus Plaza [...]
