Well, it took a bit longer than expected (losing your job in November and having a baby in January will disrupt the blog-writing process a bit), but Given and Taken in Ink's list for best albums of 2012 is finally here. This year, a handful of bands came out of nowhere and blew me away. I knew right away that debut albums from Drew Smith and The Rest would stand among the best releases of the year. They are joined by 28 other great albums, by artists well-known and obscure. I'm pleased that GTI's 2012 list is a [...]
I've been to a whole bunch of festivals in my time, but at 28, my time might be coming to an end. Creaky knees, pale skin and general grumpiness have lead me to start turning down festival invites in the hope that my favorite bands will be playing a sideshow. But Harvest Presents is different. "Harvest is not a festival, it's a feeling." Held for the first time last year in Melbourne, Brisbane and (my home town of) Sydney, the festival was one of the best musical days of my life. Even before the bands were [...]

By this point, it seems like fall (or autumn, depending on your preferred season-name) is a treasure trove of great new indie rock. Last year, some of the best albums of 2011 came out in September or later. (Wilco, Laura Marling, and Ryan Adams come to mind.) That pattern continues in 2012, with major releases in September and October, and we've got them all for you here on GTI's Fall 2012 mix: Jacket Weather . So what have we got here, you ask? Indie rock darlings Grizzly Bear revealed a wonderful new album [...]

Ruler of the world, or at least this weeks chart is miss PINK ! She has scored her first Number ONE after what, 7 releases? Kanye West's " Good Music Cruel Summer" compilation scores the second spot with a very solid 205K. The Killers are less impressive with a 113K debut. I don't think people care much anymore about them. Other debuts this week are Carly Rae Jepsen with a disappointing debut at #6 & only 45K. Its pretty sad considering all the BILLIONS of airplay she has garnered [...]

Not much needs to be said this week. This might be the height week of the year in terms of good music. Not only are Band of Horses out with their highly anticipated Mirage Rock album, but there's tons more to listen to. Let's briefly rattle off some names since there's simply way to much to cover. B en Folds Five ... what's not to like? Each album they come out with is pretty darn good; the equivalent of Matt Pond PA for me, really. Grizzly Bear 's highly anticipated album Shields is [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Circa Survive w/ Touché Amoré, Balance and Composure Friday, September 21 Center Stage - 1374 West Peachtree Street in Atlanta 30309 Admission $19 / Purchase Tickets On their fourth full length, Violent Waves , Philadelphia's Circa Survive continue to push the boundaries of their spacey prog-punk experimentation, tastefully blending ethereal melodies with soaring riffs and pseudo-psychedelic flourishes. It's likely the band's most ambitious work; everything sounds big and bold and the group displays a ready willingness [...]

“You are the music while the music lasts.” -T.S. Eliot Atoms for Peace - "Default" Radiohead acolytes, listen up: Thom Yorke's other band, Atoms for Peace (not to mention Flea's other band, along with Nigel Godrich, Joey Warkoner, and Mauro Refosco) has vowed that an album will be released in 2013. In the meantime, we've got the 123 single "Default", a glitchy, reverb-heavy cut that features (what else) Yorke's vocals, front and center. Thick synths and snapping percussion back his off-kilter croons [...]

Jo McCaughey Two, actually. Typically big albums come with big tours, but while Jack White's solo debut Blunderbuss has been inarguably one of the biggest releases of the year for the adjectiveless rock set, his touring itinerary - at least in North America - has been relatively scattershot, favouring short stretches anchored by festival dates. And while no one would call the dates announced yesterday any kind of cross-country marathon, it does include the first three eastern Canadian dates since the end of The White Stripes, [...]
