I'm trying a new approach for this post. For multi-band events, my posts tend to be very very long, and the time it takes to do seems to make the effort moot, because they publish so far after the fact. So here are photos of some of the bands I took in at SXSW: bad vantage points are why some bands didn't make the cut. Here it is chronologically! Below: 1/2 of Italy's The Secret, Keith Morris of Off! , Easy Action [...]

Australian power-trio Immolate expanded to a four piece for the release of their second full-length Ruminate . This new disc's sound is lumbering noise-metal that is directly akin to the sound of AmRep bands (Hammerhead, Helmet, Unsane) from the 90's. To get into the details of the music, vocalist/bassist Nick Irwin has a vocal style similar to Bruce Loose (Flipper) and his angry, spoken-word vocals are mostly buried beneath a wall of guitars and walloping drums. Guitarists Justin Irwin and newcomer Dave Achille wrap repetitive, noisy dirges of guitar feedback around each song [...]
I've been back in my stuffy, overheated apartment for a few days now, and I've been catching up on a lot of record listening. I find it's best to listen to records when I'm alone because no one can hear the soft, pleasurable moans I emit when the sound of my Rega stylus retracing the grooves of some sweet, sweet vinyl records floods my ears. I think somewhere in my father's house there exists a drawing (done by the Harvey Pekar of his generation, Z) of me masturbating furiously to to (presumably) my record collection. Maybe Z could simply no [...]

New Southern Lord signees Nails are kicking off a US tour this month which stops at Europa on Sept. 23rd. On the bill with Nails are Venomous Concept and Strong Intention . Tickets are $12 and the show is all ages. NAILS' music is beyond brutality; filthy, vicious and raw. Imagine a cross between the good Amrep bands of the nineties (Helmet, Hammerhead, Today is The Day, Unsane) and Cro-Mags Age of Quarrel riffage played at breakneck speeds. Their epic battle cry Unsilent Death was recorded during the cold [...]
Before there were blogs there were these things called magazines, and the only metal magazine we still get excited about reading every month is Decibel. Smart, funny, insightful, and honest, Decibel is the reason we stay on the toilet even though we finished pooing a long time ago and now our legs are falling asleep; [...]

People who become "a fan" of some bullshit on Facebook really grind my gears, and as such I've avoided joining such asinine groups as "Dear ghetto moms, no one is going to hire your kid named Shanaqualeesha" on principle. Yet one of the few I've followed is the one for Amphetamine Reptile fan page, [...]

On their self-titled debut album, Heavy Young Heathens , the musical bonding of brothers Aron and Robert Mardo, keep it raw and unvarnished — a straight-outta-the-garage Anglophilia that does its damnedest not to hide behind the fuzz. It's not a huge leap from the dirty glam the L.A.-based brothers did on two albums as Mardo , but its stripped-down quality feels more immediate. Whiskey, please. ||| Download: "Sha La La La La" ||| Live: Heavy Young Heathens play tonight at the Silverlake Lounge with Roll [...]
Get ready, because the two greatest musical outfits to ever feature Consequence of Sound staff members will soon embark on a mid-west tour of epic proportions! Yes, Michael Roffman, Jay Ziegler, and the rest of The Code Kids will join forces with Chris De Salvo's Hammerhead for what is being called the "20,000 Leagues Over Wisconsin" spring tour. Both groups will be touring in support of recently released EPs. If you remember, the Roffman-led Code Kids made quite a debut with We Sell It [...]

You're probably unaware of them, and with good reason, but Hammerhead just might be your next favorite thang . Of course, you'd have to be a Chicagoan to truly appreciate their simplistic yet raucous live show, but the songs can go anywhere. That's what makes 'em intriguing, accessible...and frisky? The Chicago duo, which consists of CoS writer Chris DeSalvo and Josh Lambert, celebrated their EP release last night at Wicker Park's own The Paramount Room. It was a foggy, dusty night about Chicago, but nobody seemed to mind. In fact, things were actually bustling, and [...]

Last year was subject to the release of The Offspring making their return with another album "Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace" which wasn't a classic from the Californian rockers but, in my view, it never got the credit it deserved. Yes, it may not have been as good as previous records but that would be one hard act to follow. One song however, was far from a dissapointment and shows the band at their best. "You're Gonna Go Far Kid" has everything you want from an Offspring track. Fast paced guitar and drum exchanges, big [...]
In the early 90s, Minneapolis, MN based Hammerhead recorded a string of EPs and albums for an independent label Amphetamine Reptile. Unfortunately, after loosing their guitarist Paul Sanders, they were unable to find a proper replacement for him and after releasing few albums with various session musicians, they decided to go on as a duo [...]

"If Hammerhead's debut was to alternative rock what Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was to independent film -- a harrowing glimpse into the cold, hard heart of darkness -- Into the Vortex is more like Quentin Tarantino's equally violent, but more sophisticated Reservoir Dogs . On their sophomore release (not counting the live EP, Evil Twin ), the band applies a greater degree of finesse to their bloodthirsty din. Although the record pummels as hard as their 1993 debut, Ethereal Killer , vocals have become a bigger part of the equation and [...]
