HELLO WORLD! So I decided to throw this post together for a number of reasons. First of all, I love metal (and other harder-edged music) and I've been trying to sneak it into my post queue here or there in an attempt to brainwash my readers into liking it too (even though some have violently protested). And second, I figured that I would occasionally cull a bunch of releases into one mega post and ironically title it "I Hate Metal." That way any of those who wish to remain untainted can know exactly what they are getting into when they [...]

Fucked Up have been releasing singles corresponding with the Chinese New Year since 2006. This year's new single is the 15-minute "Year of the Tiger" featuring Jim Jarmusch, Austra, and Annie-Claude Deschênes of Duchess Says. Matador has so graciously made the band's previous Chinese New Year singles streamable along with the new track. Take a listen to all of them below. Read more »

My first trip South of the Mason-Dixon Line (if it is indeed in Virginia like J-Fur will let some people convince her) was on a college visit to North Carolina. My dad and I pulled off at a Cracker Barrel for breakfast and I decided to try something new. I closed my eyes, buzzed my finger of the list and picked grits. At that time, as a very active high school boy who wasn't yet vegetarian, I ate nearly everything. Grits quickly became the exception. They were disgusting. I pushed the half eaten plate away. The waitress returned and asked [...]

San Francisco's Punch have done what I previously would have thought as impossible. With their latest "Nothing Lasts" EP, the band somehow managed to create something even more ferocious and pissed off than their "Self Titled" album. I've said it before and I'll say it again: while many have touted Punch as one of the most aggressive female-fronted hardcore bands around today, I want to take it a step further and say that Punch is easily one of the most furious hardcore bands around. Their 7 song, 9 minute long "Nothing Lasts" EP is one hell [...]
How about some Murder Mark for this fantastic Mixtape Monday?

A lot of my dishes the past few weeks have included soy sauce in the recipe. There was the onigiri , the scallion and potato pancakes from Appetite for Reduction, a big bowl of sesame broccoli and the sweet and sour tofu that is pictured to the right. The reason for these adventures in soy sauce is simple...I got my hands on some Microbrewed Bluegrass Soy Sauce from Bourbon Barrel Foods . I've been making excuses to put it in my mouth. Bluegrass Soy Sauce is the only microbrewed soy sauce made in the [...]

Coming off the heels of one of if not the best grindcore album of 2011, End Time; the men in Brutal Truth are at it again. This time giving us a small taste of what's to come in 2012 with their digital EP, Walking Corpse 2112 . This two song EP is brutal as fuck! It makes you yearn for more. Some may remember the song "Walking Corpse" from Brutal Truth's debut album, Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses. "Walking Corpses 2112" is a re-recording of that very song….go figure. After listening to the [...]

When I first heard Graf Orlock, I was blown away immediately. Any band that could take the Jurassic Park theme song and turn it into a grindcore song gets an A+ in my book. Los Angeles self described "cinema-grind", Graf Orlock mixes music and movies, and with their latest (well, released in 2009) "Destination: Time Today", the band brings some of the most furious grind I've heard in a long time. Admittedly, I don't watch many movies. I simply don't have the attention span to sit for 2 hours at a time and stare at a screen without [...]

Crocus Our Memories Dress Me In A Dead Lust Holy Roar 13 February 2012 by Tom Doyle British bands are often accused of apeing their American counterparts - a trend which is most patently seen in the rock mainstream, and where the UK and US markets are intrinsically wed by the lifelines of big package tours and [...]
Here's a track off the latest album from SanFran screamo and hardcore outfit Loma Prieta. Their new album is titled I.V. , and it's on Deathwish . On "Fly By Night" Loma proves itself to be just as harsh and aggressive as any other band in this style. The vocals and guitars are extremely loud and kind of brittle in texture. It's something I probably wouldn't be into if the drums didn't have so much punch to them. The bass has a really grinding quality to it as well. Despite all this "ugly," the [...]
Biohazard Reborn In Defiance Nuclear Blast 20 January 2012 by Tom Dare It's all gone a bit awry for Biohazard recently. In the summer, they split with Evan Seinfeld (singer, bass player, porn star , and the one member of the band you'd be most likely to recognise in the pub) right on the eve of Download Festival 2011. Their first album in nearly seven years was, however, recorded with Seinfeld, so whatever happens from here on in, [...]

A brief nod today to those most vibrant of modern hardcore chaps, Winnipeg's Comeback Kid . The new video for 'Do Yourself a Favor' being the occasion. It's a fierce run through of one of the best songs on 2010's 'Symptoms & Cures' , one of my favourites of that year . In the classic tradition of hardcore videos, there's a ripping live performance of the song, replete with sweat, flailing limbs, and all manner of testosterone-fueled mayhem. [...]
The Long Haul Debtors Tangled Talk 06 February 2012 by Alex Andrews For those who've waited patiently as #UKSWELL has cluttered their Twitter feed and cropped up on ironic t-shirt designs – biding their time until the day comes when there's a British band genuinely worth getting excited about, The Long Haul may well be [...]
(Hitler learns he's not on Grey Area's setlist...I found this while looking for Grey Area on youtube. I love the internet.)Yesterday was completely ridiculous. After heading to the Philly's piazza to watch a free Newfound Glory show (I don't think I've ever seen so many fights break out), then Philly's shit show "Makeout Club", I headed over to the Fire to catch melodic hardcore legends Grey

If there is one band that always manages to surprise the hell out of me, it's Fucked Up. I remember listening to their demo and Epic in Minutes back when it came out and thinking they were pretty solid hardcore band, but not the messiahs of hardcore many were touting them to be. Now ten years later they release "David Comes To Life" and not only are the 'too cool for school' writers at

At some point, the UK hardcore bubble of recent years is going to burst. Like it or not, the part-timers will at some point get bored, and the resurgence that has revitalised the country's scene over the last few years will retract, implode, and then retreat back to the underground for [...]
