The King is Dead opens the album: "Here we come to a turning of the season." They are quite correct in their warning, as this music thereafter is for another place in time. If you are looking for the morose whimsicalness the Decemberists usually intertwine into breathtaking tracks, you might want to look in another prairie. Don't get me wrong, the album is not bad, in face it's quite good, but it stands in stark contrast to their previous album, The Hazards of Love (not to mention their entire discography). For the most part, the sound [...]
Country twang? I'm not sure how I feel about this Mr. Meloy... i'm not at all sure. Not that I'm not a friend of the twang, in fact I often love a good bluegrass jam as well as many other forms of music related to miscolored shrubbery. All that aside, it's not quite what I [...]
Colin Meloy of the Decemberists, performing a solo acoustic set for KEXP's day stage at the Ace Hotel, New York for CMJ 2010 The Decemberists are an indie folk rock band from Portland, Oregon, United States, fronted by singer/songwriter Colin Meloy. This song comes from their latest album, "The Hazards of Love" a concept album they released in latter part of 2009. We found a very cool remix/mashup below from DJ Chase Marz. Some of you who have read my work on this site may know that I have a predilection for ranking things. But, in the spirit of the season, let's put aside all competition and just hand out plaudits to a few of my favorite things that music had to offer in 2009.

It's that time of year again! Following are my Top 15 Albums of 2009. As usual, I tried to balance the order of the list between what I personally perceive as artistic merit (quality of songwriting, vocals, and instrumentation) and basic listenability (how many times I played the album throughout the year). I've included some new commentary and brief quotes from the original reviews. Click on the album titles to read the full reviews, purchase the albums, and in some cases download mp3s... The animated video accompanies The Hazards of Love, the Decemberists' ambitious concept album.

"We are pleased to announce the official release of Here Come the Waves: The Hazards of Love Visualized, a collaboration between the band and four filmmakers, Guilherme Marcondes, Julia Pott, Peter Sluszka and Santa Maria - each of whom have created an animation to accompany a section of the music." Okay, okay, I think I may have just had a "musical orgasm" of sorts. NOW, let's start the weekend... Cheers, Tsuru Tsuru And The Bride | Etsy | Society | Facebook | Twitter
Off of this year's The Hazards of Love , an album which I will review at some point. No related posts.
The definition of a grower, The Decemberists' ensemble cast rock opera 'The Hazards of Love' should win hearts with its dark and twisted love story.

The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love My Thoughts: Love (<) + I have never been a huge fan of the Decemberists, though I have always admired their work. Their ability is undeniable, but their songs, for me, never really got past the Charming mark. The Hazards of Love is their first magnificent album, in my opinion. There are no pop songs on this record, so it's a little hard to get addicted to, but after [...]

My friend Makena is a dancer, and a choreographer, and she put together a dance show that is based around the Decemberist's newest album, The Hazards of Love. I'm playing a minor role, but, still, rehearsal is a time consuming monster. the show is this friday and saturday, so, after that, I'll have more reviews posted. Thanks for understanding about the delay. There might be someone recording the show, and if there is, I'll link to the video when it goes live.

The Decemberists are set to bring ' The Hazards of Love ' to North America with a just announced tour. The band are set to embark on the jaunt on August 1 wit a performance at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, RI. Among the dates announced are shows in Toronto, Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco. The tour will see the band play their entire new album, ' The Hazards of Love ', in its entirety on several of the dates. [...]

The Decemberists have announced plans to play their entire new album, ' Hazards of Love ', at the forthcoming Treasure Island Festival . The band are set to play the San Francisco festival which runs from October 17-18 at Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay. The band will play the album in it's entirety on Sunday, October 18. The line-up for the two-day fest was recently released with Grizzly Bear , Flaming Lips , and Beirut among those set to take part in the bash. [...]
Portland's own folk-rock concept album creators are back with a new LP that much like The Crane Wife before it, is a gathering of songs held together by a narrative and style gleaned from British folk music, and all sparked off by the discovery of one Anne Brigg's 1966 EP, The Hazards Of Love . Are you still with us? Fair play. One may have thought that the wonderful Crane Wife had got this sort of album out of their system – elegant as it was in its songs based around the oriental [...]

Decemberists at Radio City Music Hall (06/10/09) Photos : Jon Klemm If it wasn't for some unforeseen circumstances, I would have been at this show (I actually had great seats and was looking forward to hearing The Hazards of Love live). No need to be alarmed though, I've got pictures and an excerpt from a fawning review, and as you can see, we're good to go: After the opener, the Decemberists played two sets. The first earned them an A+ on the [...]
I never actually mentioned this in my 2009 Sasquatch! Festival coverage, but it's the kind of salacious/humorous story I usually eat up, so here goes ( Michael Musto style): An overly frisky couple experienced their own Hazards of Love moment when they were caught having very public sex during The Decemberists set at the 2009 Sasquatch! Festival. I imagine this won't happen again tonight ( June 10 ) in the rarified air of Radio City where you can catch Colin Meloy and [...]

Photography by Tsuru (in old school wallpaper size, click it, then save) So baby and I got home a few minutes before the doors were to open, but we know how these things go, we live about a 5 minute leisurely bike ride from the Lifestyles Pavilion, so there's no rush. We cooked up some yummy chicken sausage and Mac N' Cheese for me, edamame for baby (she can't do cow cheese, though I suspect there is nothing even chemically resembling cheese in Mac N' Cheese). We [...]
