It's nearly June! And just in time for the approaching summer season, four of our favorite pop princesses are now smoldering on the covers of major fashion, style and fitness magazines across the world. Britney Spears has us begging to seek Amy with her tight, toned physique on the cover of Shape Magazine , Selena Gomez [...]
Roberto De Simone Con La Participazione Della Nuova Compagnia Di Canto Popolare - Coro Della Lavandaie The Nuova Compagnie Di Canto Popolare group was formed in Napoli during the late 60s and is apparently still active in some form. Ahoy! Let's go around the world, shall we? As per usual in this week's round-up of Pop Goes the World , I've lassoed some Scandinavians (no surprise there) — the lovely Oh Land from Denmark, Eurovision contestant Margaret Berger (spoiler alert: she didn't win; spoiler alert 2: she's amazing) and Swedish alt-popsters Kate Boy — as well as the ultra-hip Sinead Harnett (via the UK) and an Australian DJ named Lancelot who's positively royal. Passports out? Cool. Let's do it.

In our own review of Daft Punk 's much-hyped and uber-buzzed-about fourth album, we noted that " Random Access Memories is many things: a gamble, a Genesis scroll of Daft Punk’s musical DNA, a mesmerizing summation of their career to this point and a dynamic jumping-off point for the next phase of their creative evolution. Oh, and also, it’s fun." And for the most part, online critics seem to agree that by abandoning the use of samples and digital technology this time around, the arbiters of French electro-pop have presented us with [...]

Well, a version of Beyonce 's Timbaland -produced five-minute Pepsi jingle "Grown Woman" leaked last night, and it's definitely good if you like tribal beats and the absence of a chorus (personally, I do), but not so great if you were expecting a big commercial single with a big commercial hook. Then again, it's Beyonce, so she's not really playing by anyone's rules but her own. Maybe this is what commercial sounds like in 2013. Who knows. Our own Carl Williott wrote that the song is "a frenetic, globetrotting dance track with a tribal rhythm, chants and a descending [...]

The girls of Fifth Harmony cut their teeth on The X Factor performing lushly harmonized (per the name) covers of pop hits, so when they stopped by Idolator headquarters in New York City, it only felt natural that they'd turn out a cover or two for your enjoyment — and to wit, the girls were willing to put their spin on Taylor Swift 's album title track "Red." There are a bunch of things about this that are phenomenal: Camila Cabello 's absolutely sickening vocal performance on the second verse; the [...]

Backtracking is our recurring look back at the pop music that shaped our lives. Our friends may come and go, but we'll be spinning our favorite albums forever. DMX 's debut is a landmark hip-hop album, but it's also a pop album (as in, popular), which is utterly hilarious. It's Dark and Hell Is Hot , released on May 19, 1998, went straight to No. 1 its opening week, and it went 4x Platinum in just over two years. That's despite the fact that it was a sociopathic, off-putting collection of shouted rhymes about [...]

The 2013 Billboard Music Awards are now behind us, but the winners , performances and crazy, neck-breaking moments will live on the Internet forever, for us to dissect. Online critics had plenty to say about Billboard 's annual shindig, this year staged at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. From Miguel 's stage jump to Madonna 's acceptance speech to the surprisingly audible heckling Justin Bieber faced when he stepped up to receive his Milestone Award, the Internet had its choice of topics to cover. [...]

Well! It was a dreary night at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, wasn't it? There were forty performances each from Pitbull and Will.i.am ! They only gave out three awards! Justin Bieber talked at length about his craft! Host Tracy Morgan sputtered all of his lines and could barely read the teleprompter! Yes, it was one for the books, folks. One for the books. That said, there were still some highlights — a handful of exceptional performances and some nice moments of shade-throwing from various members of the pop glitterati — and, well, some lowlights. ( Remember when [...]

Backtracking is our recurring look back at the pop music that shaped our lives. Friends may come and go, but we’ll be spinning our favorite albums forever. “We had the kind of night where morning comes too soon…” So goes the seductive spoken intro that launched Janet Jackson’s fifth album, janet. — that’s a little j with an emphatic period — released on May 18, 1993. Following the social consciousness of her previous blockbuster, 1989’s Rhythm Nation 1814 , Jackson returned with a fresh sound and look, and free-spirited confidence. The new [...]

:: Romanthony , soul house music pioneer, died at age 45 due to complications of kidney disease. After having once described his music as "physical pain," yet best known for his Auto-Tuned chorus in Daft Punk 's "One More Time," the New Jersey native was recording new music with MikeQ and Boyz Noize . Well! It's the Billboard Music Awards tonight, which features majorly star-studded performance from some great artists, and some ones you don't care about at all, and a lot of inexplicable appearances from the stars of ABC sitcoms you've never watched! Oh, what a wonderful party it is. We'll be updating the list throughout the night, so stay close to see who's taking home the big awards. Kanye West 's album art for Yeezus has been revealed. Shortly before West took the Saturday Night Live stage , Kim Kardashian and West's manager posted a photo of the cover, placed by the sneakers that West wore on stage (above). While West performed new songs "Black Skinhead" and "New Slaves" to a quick-cutting slideshow of sales tags - shout out to Savers - the Yeezus cover art features an indecipherable bronze mass. Maybe it's a bust being melted apart. (Crane your head to the right.) Maybe [...]

Uxulu - African Warrior Originally brought to my attention by dj Aicha of Paris, this is the 15:20 long version banned in South Africa where it was made in 1977. Like a moth to a flame that burns by the fire, our love for Janet Jackson is blind, can't you see our desire — to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Janet with another Twitter re-listening party. Yes, you read that right, Janet turns the big 2-0 on Saturday (May 18). Instead of wallowing in the fact that the infamous choreography to "If" is now two decades old, we're going to celebrate the chart-topping album that brought us timeless hits like "That's The Way Love Goes" "Anytime, Anyplace" and "Because Of Love" the best [...]

Beyonce is pregnant again , according to E! Online (not the New York Post , who reported it earlier this week but are no longer even remotely credible, which is pretty grim if you think about it). As is par for the course, the Internet was quick to respond (cue the think pieces!) with thoughts on Kanye West , that surrogacy issue and Bey's pop contemporaries: Here are some of the best (read: shadiest) tweets from some Twitter funny people. Kanye is going to announce his pregnancy [...]
