Denizo – a member of Jazz Gangsters - offers us some "strange things" in a new release on the Lucky Time label. A couple of months ago, Jazz Gangsters published a debut nu-jazz and hip-hop album entitled "Golden Jazzyland." During the recording of that album it was impossible to predict how much things would spin out of control – and turn into a collection of broken, dope beats. Maybe that's because Denizo also works as a techno producer. Not long ago, in fact, he published 12" some fearsome German techno on Shaded Records. When [...]

===>STREAM ON SOUNDCLOUD HERE<== Check out the brand new tune "Too Much Birthday " from the upcoming Highlighter EP from People Under The Stairs. Highlighter EP, a prelude to People Under The Stairs' most ambitious work to date, marks the beginning of their 8th album release and captures the unparalleled group at the height of their 4 year career. More than just an indie hip-hop album, Highlighter's outside collaborators comprise a group of influential LA indy-rock producers, engineers, and live players. The Duo dug deep into tape, obscure recods, and [...]

Today I've got a real sick underground sounding hip hop album from the talented Catch Lungs, based out of Denver. The 13 song album Awake In A Dream is real sick, and has some features from eLZhi, Blue, Guilty Simpson, One be Lo, FL, and Soul-Aum. With a feature list like that, you've got a recipe for success. It's got a real true hip hop sound that's typically lost these days. The production on the entire thing has a very organic sound, and doesn't dive on the electronic side, which is pretty refreshing. Check out the video to Hooliganry [...]

Image Via Up North Trips Over at the LA Weekly , there is a list of the 20 Greatest L.A. Hip Hop Albums of All Time . I was one fourth of the selection committee, alongside Ian Cohen , Rebecca Haithcoat , and the music editor, healthiest man in Miracle Mile, Ben Westhoff . I drew Suga Free, Snoop, Freestyle Fellowship, Quik, and Madlib. Those are fun things to write about. Predictably, the comment section has devolved into: "YO, 2PAC AIN'T EVEN FROM LA," and "WHO [...]

Shwayze & Cisco Adler have been making music for a few years now and now here's the first true big release following up The W's . It follows The W's in that Cali worry free vibe. It's an acoustic powered ride with Shwayze dropping some clever rhymes throughout. Then Cisco's singing making the perfect and original singing / rap / acoustic combo. This album just came out a This album has got that summer vibe all the way through, just in time to make you warm as the colder months come in. This album dropped last month [...]
Moka Only & Chief - Crickets This Swiss/Canadian collabo sounds FRESH TO DEATH! Chief comes through with them banging beats, and Moka rides them, with ill flows. If you ask me....this right here,... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]
Somehow, billing an artist to play their most famous release, exclusively, got super vogue all of the sudden. Nas did Illmatic . Erykah Badu did Baduizm . A Tribe Called Quest did Midnight Marauders . So, yeah, some good stuff got covered, but what else is there? In appreciation of the ever-strong Rock The Bells festival series, and also of the more sponsorship-heavy recent Red Bull Music Academy , here's ten shows that we would want to see. Read More...

I would pay $8.99 for the album x 5 if these 1-minute 30-second songs were 3 minutes. This is one evolved growth spurt from seattle hiphop. Its glitchy and soulful. Back and forth through intricate thoughtful sounds and soothing funk samples. Track 18 for example! I'm waiting for kanye's voice to bust out. Face Scrunchers Vol. 2 by P Smoov

Today I've got the very sick, chill, laid back debut album from Mike Stud, A Toast to Tommy . We've featured a handful of the tracks off this, including College Humor and Back Again (Ft. Huey Mack) . Mike does a great job at making a hiphop album that everyone can enjoy, he's got some solid flow, mixed with some great production, ends up with a feel good album perfect for partying or chilling. It's cool to think, because this is the first huge release for this artist, and look where he's gone off that. Defintely worth [...]
Before iTunes and Amazon gave us the luxury of picking and choosing which tracks we want off an album, we had to buy the entire CD or cassette tape to listen to everything we paid for. The intro ... Continue reading "Top 10 Hip-Hop Album Intro Tracks" >

Today I've got a summer inspired release I've been looking forward to posting. It's We Are Nothing by Radical Something. If you haven't been paying attention this past summer, Radical Something is the two piece collaboration of rapper Loggy and singer Josh Cocktail. The result is a summertime blend reminding me of Shwayze and Cisco Adler. We posted Be Easy (ft. Kinetics) , Long Care Don't Care and Ecscape and the album follows the same acoustic, care free vibe. I couldn't pick just one track, so listen definitely grab the whole album, which [...]

Preview of the forthcoming Moka O & Chief album Crickets , past collaborations from these two have proven to be hella-dope, this one's looking to be more of the same typa illness. Canadian rapper/producer Moka Only teams up with Swiss beatmaker Chief for the finest indie hip-hop album you might hear this year, "Crickets". The album showcases the talent of two very gifted artists, pushing the boundaries of hip-hop while preserving its backbone. The album showcases Moka Only's unique raps fused with Chief's sound signature of merging straight hip-hop elements with forward-thinking production. [...]

Today I've got a release I've been incredibly excited to premiere through Thissongissick. It's the full album / mixtape from Logic, Young Sinatra. He brought you and . Well all three tracks were great, but this entire things is amazing. It's hands down one of the best releases of 2011. It's way more then a mixtape, it's a free album. It's even got some skits, and interludes, and more, really making it a couple steps above your average free release. It was real hard trying to pick only a few tracks off the mixtape, so I just through up the whole thing. [...]

Today I've got a sick new album from Beau Young Prince, the D.C. based rapper. He dropped The Reverse Effect earlier this year. Now I know I overuse the term "chill" alot, but this album is incredibly chill and laid back, from the solid production to the smooth flow. The production from Charleston based Electrical Requiem is very on point, and really has a mellow sample based feel. Beau has a very unique slow flow that reminds me of Wiz Khalifa's Kush & OJ. Check out the album, chill, enjoy! Beau [...]
As someone with the relatively hipster tendency to only listen to albums as complete wholes, I must say that many hip hop releases stretch the limits of my patience. I don't know what it is about the genre that makes the artists believe that their fans want nothing more than to hear an album full of painfully unfunny skits, garbage attempts at crossover singles, redundant posse tracks, and a slew of '"bonus" songs that weren't good enough to be integrated into the sequence of the actual album so they become tacked on haphazardly at the end. There are too many [...]

Today I'm excited to bring you the latest mixtape from Chicago's Na Palm. He's the guy who brought you very sick Dirty Girls Like Dirty Beats mixtape last year, which was a great combination of hip hop and electronic music. Well this new tape Late At Night is an even better blend of genres. Na Palm delivers some pretty solid flow, with some bars reminding me of some Slim Shady. The whole tape's got some amazing production, with all of the beats perfect for a club. This album is the perfect music to rage [...]
