Writing an introduction for these things is becoming increasingly difficult. After all, each new Friday Mixtape seems to one up the last, leaving me scouring the thesaurus in hopes of finding a new way to say awesome! Awe-inspiring? Wondrous? Mind-blowing? All work... and all describe this week's edition, which of course features a mix of the best new singles, remixes, and covers as well as mp3s from some up-and-comers you just might want to check out. NEW Singles: "Shape Shifter" by Armistead Burwell Smith IV (of Pinback) [...]

They call it Joyful Noise , and while the title is fit for an LP, it's not the name of Hi Red Center 's latest release. No, that was dubbed Assemble and it can be found on the record label of that name: Joyful Noise Recordings. It sure fits; Hi Red Center's music is a bit out there, with wild guitars, barbershop quartet-like compounded vocals, and seemingly randomness when it comes to instrumentation, these guys have a very interesting but equally refreshing sound. A good distinction for [...]

If there's one album to recommend out of this week's bunch, it would certainly be Aboa Sleeping from the Finnish duo Burning Hearts . It's one of the better pop albums i've heard this year from beginning to end, which is a shame since the album isn't getting nearly the amount of coverage that it deserves. You can read the preview post from a couple of weeks ago right here . Other notable albums out this week include It's Not Me, It's You from Lily Allen , Dan [...]

Littlest Giant Chicken Gorlet Hi Red Center's new album, Assemble (due out Feb 10, 2009) is either genius or atrocious depending on your state of mind. Upon first listening to the album all the way through, I was reminded of band practice from when I was in seventh or eighth grade: everyone is playing technically on time but off just enough to sound scattered and not together. It's taking the Mingus aphorism of notation (that the note is an area in which one must land [...]

Now that we're passed Halloween and are almost at mid-November, PopWreckoning is finally able to come to terms with the impending holiday season. It's not that we're Scrooges or anything, we just think that September is way too early to even begin thinking about winter holidays; we like to revel in the pretty changing leaves and crisp afternoons. We did mention a bit of holiday news before because it involved our favorite fake news pundit and some very special musicians , but now we're delighted to share with you a present! Joyful Noise [...]

Maybe it's just us, but fall always seems to be such a depressing time of the year. The sky darkens earlier, the weather gets colder and colder, and aside from a few fortunate lucky kids in Texas, the music festivals are few and far between. Then again, the season does mark a rather stellar time for new music, something certainly reflected in this week's edition of our Friday Mixtape. So maybe things aren't so bad after all... Omar Rodriguez-Lopez & Damo Suzuki - Please Heat This Eventually Part IV (GSL 2007) Omar Rodriguez-Lopez & Damo Suzuki – Please Heat This Eventually / GSL Fittingly enough, my first introduction to krautrock masterminds and genre-defying pioneers Can was through Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. I was somewhat a latecomer to the spastic world of At the Drive-In; a late night viewing of the 'One Armed Scissors' video on MTV in my later high school years sent me on the 45-minute drive to the closest decent record store (the [...]
