Last month, Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn released Clear Heart Full Eyes , his first-ever solo album, and he's lately done a few different in-studio sessions for a few different media outlets. At a couple of those, he's played songs that, for whatever reason, didn't appear on the album. During his session for NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts video session, he did one called "Jeremiah's Blues," a really sad and beautifully written story-song that should've absolutely been on the album. And on a session for Minnesota Public Radio's The Current , he played [...]

I'm lucky enough to have a ticket to see Craig Finn at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco in a couple of weeks, but really, this NPR Tiny Desk Concert is just gorgeous and perfect, and should do in a pinch if you can't see him live. As the man said, "All these mournful, inward-facing songs (including the unreleased "Jeremiah's Blues") require is the Hold Steady singer, his acoustic guitar and the indispensable pedal steel of Ricky Ray Jackson." And that pedal steel? That pedal steel will break your heart.

Yes, Craig Finn week has arrived in the Twin Cities. In celebration of the release of his new solo album, Clear Heart Full Eyes, the Hold Steady's good-timing frontman is in town this weekend. He's g

Mick Rock I will be the first to admit to not really being able to tell where Bradford Cox's Deerhunter ends and his Atlas Sound begins. I know that the former is ostensibly a band and the latter a solo project, but to my ears the hazy, psychedelic rock that each project produces isn't exactly a world apart. Okay, Atlas Sound is more keys, less guitars, but they're both critically adored and don't really do a lot for me, despite on paper being the sort of thing I should totally dig. [...]
This past week featured new albums by Cloud Nothings and the Hold Steady's frontman Craig Finn . Cloud Nothings' Dylan Baldi is taking a harder approach than his past offerings with the help of Steve Albini on Attack on Memory . Even though Baldi joked about Albini's influence in a recent interview, the producer's touches are clearly heard on singles No Future/No Past and No Sentiment . [...]

For music releases...the first couple months of a new year is usually a dead time filled with leftovers, new bands, and sophomore albums. It's very hard to make lists for bands with one album since their list is pretty much every song on their debut album. There's really no point in making a list. It's like eating a BLT and then making a list of the five favorite ingredients in the sandwich.

Rather than stay home in Brooklyn, Finn traveled to Austin to work with a new set of musicians and producer Mike McCarthy ( Spoon , Trail of Dead). The result is is new solo album, 'Clear Eyes, [...]
"I can't hear you -- literally."A hilarious exchange between two Minneapolis favorites unfolds in a new "interview" of sorts between Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn and Hüsker Dü/Sugar kingpin Bob Mo

C | 01.24.11 | Domino | Stream | MP3 | CD | Vinyl You know how every Hold Steady song begins with frontman Craig Finn telling a story over slowly building guitar riffs, with Finn not even singing but preaching, teasing you in before the band explodes into an epic, upbeat, sing-along hook? Now imagine those songs minus the epic explosion. That's Finn's solo album, Clear Heart Full Eyes in a nutshell. Continue reading: Album Review: Craig Finn - Clear Heart Full [...]

The Hold Steady front man will visit San Diego in February // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

War Child When The Hold Steady get likened to Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band , it's usually in reference to the big, raucous, arena-sized bar-rock that the latter invented and the former aspire to. So it kind of made sense that the two would be paired up for the 2009 War Child: Heroes benefit compilation wherein artists covered their inspirations, but the song selection was a bit curious. "Atlantic City" comes from Springsteen's 1982 record Nebraska and being a [...]

i hadnt planned on talking about the new craig finn record, clear heart full eyes - due out next week, cause i figured just about every other blog had talked about it already. maybe they have, maybe they havent? honestly i dont check these things, but sometimes i just hate adding to the noise. what changed my mind? actually listening to it. admittedly, i wasnt a huge fan of the last two hold steady records, and was just a lil leery of a finn solo record. sure, the guy is responsible for 3 of my favorite records of [...]

Over the past several years, The Hold Steady have elbowed their way into the pack of bands whom I consider my personal favorites. I was definitely excited then, when word came out last year that lead singer and songwriter Craig Finn would be releasing his first solo album. That album, Clear Heart Full Eyes , comes out on January 24th. Fans of The Hold Steady will be very familiar with the themes of this record. Finn, as always, feeds us a steady diet of songs the depict loneliness and [...]

This is a great track. I can't listen to it without smiling- partially because I've been anticipating this album so much. I basically idolize The Hold Steady , which many of you probably understand. Anyway- Craig Finn 's solo record is due out right around the corner and this song is a fantastic preview. "New Friend Jesus" is country twang and clever lyrics ( "It's hard to suck with Jesus in your band." ) Stream Clear Heart Full Eyes in full at NPR.com . [...]
