On the floor downstairs where Robot works, some people make 6Music's brilliant NowPlaying show. Sometimes, when there's nothing else to play on the office stereo, the only option is to pop downstairs and see what's on their desk. Yesterday, we were recommended the Scuba album, 'Personality'. "It's really 90s" we were told. "Oh, like Azari & III?" asked Robot. "Not really," he said. "Less New York gay club and more London warehouse." He also made a hand gesture which looked a bit like the international signal for 'wanker' [...]
His much lauded new album has been gathering rave reviews from industry insiders, his label Hotflush is going from strength to strength with a string of quality releases and his new EP "The Hope" is garnering airplay across an eclectic mix of radio stations. It's a good time to be Scuba . He's come a long way from his early days going to jungle and house nights in London before moving his production sound towards the fledgling dubstep scene. From there it has slowly developed towards house and techno with this new EP demonstrating a [...]

Don't Hold Ya Breath: The long-awaited first single from Marcus D's sophomore LP, Melancholy Hopeful. The fusion of sultry strings and mellow clarinet, coupled with biting, yet endearing lyrics from veteran jazz-hop wordsmith, Funky DL, displays both artists at the top of their game. Bolo, Marcus D's protege of sorts, also brings a classically smooth remix to the proverbial jazz-lounge table. The results are simply too good to be deemed "B-side" material in the traditional sense of the word. This isn't just good jazz-hop, this is good music. [...]
Michael Kiwanuka's place on the BBC's 'Sound of 2011' was a pretty safe bet. Somehow, he has managed to capture a strong online audience, as well as an even stronger radio following. A feat far harder than people consider. Much of this could well be to do with his timeless sound. A combination of jazz and soul that harks back unabashedly to some of his early influences of Otis Redding and Bill Withers. It's common to find bands taking a genre and giving it a 'modern twist'. Michael Kiwanuka however seems more than content to reside within the boundaries of [...]
All the best to all of you for 2012. And better things. Here's wishing you the bluest sky, And hoping something better comes tomorrow. Hoping all the verses rhyme, And the very best of choruses to Follow all the doubt and sadness. I know that better things are on the way. Here's hoping all the days ahead Won't be as bitter as the ones behind you. [...]
Live Like Kings are a perfect example of why listening to live music is just so great. More often than not, it's the supporting acts of today that becomes the headliners of tomorrow. Or, even if they don't become headliners, as anyone that has strayed as far into the blogosphere as you have to find us will attest to, the size of a band by no means determines their quality. With my now ad hoc employment as a pseudo-journalist for several venues around the Brighton area, it's meant going to an awful lot more gigs. Something that i've [...]
The Phantom Runners recently stopped by BBC Introducing to perform tunes, "Not The Same Without You" and "Hope". "Not The Same Without You" has an eerily, catchy sound similar to "The Drums". The verses are quite sweet and memorable. "Hope" is exactly what the title says, a hopeful ode to keep a relationship together. Really vastly different tracks, that show off the immense talent and diversity this band has to offer. BBC Introducing Session by thephantomrunners
Friday 23 rd of September saw the opening night of the Brighton Weekender at the Hope. A two evening event raising funds for Amnesty international, it was perhaps a little disappointing not to see a stronger turn out to appreciate local talent playing for such a worthy cause. The night began in a low key manner with The Vaudevilles, described as being "three quarters perfect" by following act New Union, with that final quarter being the unplanned absence of drummer. Not to be discouraged by this they opted for a more [...]

Hand's stamped and beers ready the Hope crowd prepared for a night of rock n roll, punk and whole lot in between. Headlining were the newly signed Various Cruelties, setting out on their UK tour off the back of an impressive festival season, having also supported the likes of Mumford & Sons and The Vaccines, evidence they're as well connected as they are talented. The night kicked off with local Worthing lads Chemical Smile thrashing it out in their floral patterned attire. Images of an Ordinary Boys all grown down came flashing past your eyes, only spurred on [...]
Scuba: infinitely more exciting than Aqualung that's for sure

Scuba – The Hope
Scheduled for a February 6th release, The Hope is the first single from Scuba's forthcoming album Personality . A sinister ten-ton beat laced with down-pitched vocals and the occasional section of euphoric chords, it's like being hit over the head with a groovy brick. The less abrasive but equally bassy 'Flash Addict' appears on the flip and was actually made available for free download this week, so you can grab that after the jump. Just to clarify, when I mention Scuba, I'm referring to the seminal electronic artist, not Scuba Steve , [...]

Spoiling the masses with an early release to the years most anticipated LP, Rose will showcase his recent acquiring of crossbreed alchemy on the 27th of February. "An optimist is someone who gets treed by a lion but enjoys the scenery."
Winter is in the wings. The weatherman says single digits by tomorrow night. As soon as I finish here, I'm going to fill my feeders so the birds won't go hungry. The bird man on NPR this morning said the birds would be at the feeders even more when it gets cold. I'm also going to hunt for the heater for the bird bath as that same bird man said birds need water this time of year even more than food. Yesterday I was far busier than usual: the list of those accomplishments is long so today I [...]
AUDIO: Mobb Deep – Conquer (prod. by Havoc)
What is this? Is Mobb Deep getting back on to that down to earth hiphop that gave them fame in the first place? Production by Havoc is tight and Prodigy's lyrics are not that bad. I had to share this... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Sissy & The Blisters & The Hope
Things started eerily quiet upstairs at The Hope. Quiet enough to grab a pint, have a sit down, a nice way to end the week sure, but not what's expected from one of Brighton's best and bravest venues! Luckily it was quick to change, Live Like Kings snatched up the first support slot. Things started calmly with an acoustic solo performance from front man Adam O' Neill. He was soon joined though for a run through of their particularly lauded live set. The subsequent raw, yet emotive set, remained punctuated by the thumping bass lines that hold Adam's [...]
