Dusdin Condren I'm not playing "firsties" here, but I've always known that Sharon Van Etten would go on to big things since writing up her debut Because I Was In Love back in October 2009 , and following 20102s excellent epic it seemed pretty clear that her third album Tramp - released yesterday - would be the one that would see her break out in a big way. That said, I'm still surprised at just [...]

Portland's resident rustic folkies Horse Feathers have announced a new album, Cynic's New Year . Due April 17th via Kill Rock Stars, the 12-track effort sees the band's minimal string setup expanded to 11 members in order to "broaden their sonic palette," according to a release. Skyler Norwood (Blind Pilot, Talkdemonic) served as producer. Check out the album's tracklist below, followed by the video for "Belly of June" off the band's last album, 2010's Thistled Spring . Cynic's New Year Tracklist: [...]

That there is the cover of the new Horse Feathers album, which comes out on April 17 on Kill Rock Stars . As you can see, the record is called Cynic's New Year , and as you might not be able to see, it is "by Horse Feathers with help from some various other folks." (That's the small print on the cover.) Cynic's New Year —which one is that again? Doesn't that one come between the Year of the Rat and the Year of the Bearded Toad?—is the Portland group's fourth full-length. [...]

The time of solely spring and summer festivals is long gone, but with new festivals like Tacoma's Fall Free For All sprouting up, you won't find me complaining. The all free arts fest is happening October 8th and 9th in Tacoma's historic theater district and features 75 performances spanning film, dance, theater, poetry and of [...]
I don't know about you, but I love a nice poetic story about the creation of an equally poetic band. Something that makes the music they present sound all the more home-grown and full of bold character. Oh Ruin, which is taken from the surname of the band's creator Eoin O'Ruainigh, are a pleasure to [...]

Hey! Thought we forgot about this, eh? Nah... Next time I leave the country for a month, I will also leave access to the hard drive where all my files are located. So we're still aiming to re-post all of the Blogophilia volumes by summer's end. Today we have volumes 5 & 6, which feature promotional MP3s available during May and June of 2009. As always, these are gapless mixes with cover art. These are only up for a limited time, so get them now! - [...]

Frank Yang One perennial highlight - okay, for two years - of my SXSW adventures was throwing day parties where we could invite Japanese Action Comic Punk outfit Peelander-Z to wreak havoc. So it was nice to see that not only were the Peelanders in town for NXNE , but they had an all-ages afternoon show scheduled at Sneaky Dee's on the Saturday. I guess Toronto's still getting used to the idea of having shows when it's still daylight out, because the gig was only attended [...]
Portland indie rockers Priory self-titled, full-length debut is chock full of lush melodies and lovely harmonies sure to please your earholes.
Here is part 4 of who to see at NXNE . This time on Saturday June 18, 2011. There is a lot of things to see during the daytime and nighttime. Usually on the Saturday I would go down to the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern for CBC Radio 32s show. But this year I might have to break my tradition. I am setting my eyes on staying at this venue which is the Great Hall. Playing there are: 9pm - Duzheknew [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News NXNE wouldn't be the party that it is without the daytime showcases, BBQs and oh so mysterious "secret shows." So for every free burger, cheap drink and secret set [...]
Portland, Oregon's Horse Feathers are perfecters of melodic ukulele-soaked Americana hymns. Florid with other selectively used instrumentation, the band has a subtle country twang that is entirely palatable for those who may be opposed to that sort of thing. Praise such as this, coming from a writer with decidedly unfavorable views towards most Americana music...
The first time I saw Pete Lawrie live, he toddled on stage nervously and, perched on the edge of it, said "I get a bit nervous when I perform, so I think this is the best way to break the ice…" He then, without being in front of the microphone, began tearing into his acoustic [...]
