by teepoo Yesterday was a pretty great set of artists which I've previously blogged about but have not actually seen live. It was Young Empires CD release but the opening bands Paradise Animals, Honheehonhee and Bravestation made it a particularly great set. First up was Paradise Animals. They played some new things off their free EP that is available on Bandcamp . My boyfriend described them as a band that listens to nothing but the Talking [...]

I approached the darkly lit back area stage just minutes into Shigeto's performance. I was intrigued, mostly by a girl, (her name was Olivia,) as she wriggled her body to each tune, drink in hand. You'd think she was part of the act the way people oggled as she would drop and carelessly sway. It wasn't until L.A bred Shlohmo hit the stage that the venue's capacity started to grow. "Excuse me, I'm really tired," he quipped. Immediately after he dropped his first beat though the crowd had a sense of ease; everyone, including Shlohmo, let go [...]
Greg Wood and his band of merry men known as Horseshoe slide into Under The Volcano Wednesday night for the late-'90s warhorses' second "reunion" gig since getting back together at Rudyard's th... Continue reading "Horseshoe's Top 5 F*cked Up Songs" >

One of the hardest working bands in the past few years, Toronto via Ottawa trio The Balconies has been surprisingly quiet in the past few months. Perhaps it's because they are working on their follow up to their successful debut album or maybe they are at home hopelessly addicted to watching Jersey Shore marathons. I'm not quite sure and frankly, it's none of my business. What I do know is that the band is playing a host of HPX dates which will see them return victoriously. They will probably want to celebrate it at the Horseshoe on October [...]
Looking for some funk with your rock n' roll tonight? Well you're in luck. Head on down to the Horseshoe to catch The Bright Light Social Hour . The band won 6 Austin Music Awards at this year's SXSW. They are in town on the back of their 2010 self-titled debut album and live EP that was released in the spring. Check out this live performance of "Shanty" to know what to expect:
If you're looking for something to do tonight and tomorrow, you should consider catching Canadian indie electro act We Are Lovers as they pull into Toronto for a pair of shows. The band play tonight at The Horseshoe and tomorrow night at Rancho Relaxo as they prepare to release their new album early in 2012. Later this week they have gigs in Peterborough, Kingston, and Ottawa. Check out the

For any Star Slinger fans, the DJ will be playing a show in Toronto on Tuesday, November 2nd at The Horseshoe Tavern with openers Shlohmo and Shigeto. Star Slinger recently released his first official single Dumbin after remixing the likes of Drake, Washed Out and The Weeknd. Share and Enjoy:

Xavier Boyer, Médéric Gontier, Sylvain Marchand, Pedro Resende, Raphaël Léger & Julien Barbagallo are otherwise known as tahiti 80 , one of the most seductive live acts I've had the pleasure to see this year. They also have a following that I would describe as "intimate and loyal", possibly the most attractive fanbase an independent artist can ever achieve. Around since the late 902s, tahiti 80 is one of those band names you often hear, but may confuse with numerous others. I myself thought that I might be going to see Air Cuba that night, [...]

Toronto - As I walked into The Horseshoe Tavern for Male Bonding's Friday night show, I immediately noticed that Dinosaur Jr. was playing over the PA. This was notable for a couple of reasons - for one thing, Dinosaur Jr. is a great band. But it was also notable because the London band's latest album Endless Now was recorded in the same studio and with the same producer as Dino Jr's Where You Been . This probably isn't just a coincidence as Male Bonding's noisy punk stylings sound like they could have come from some time in [...]

Frank Yang A number of things I hadn't done in a while: gone to a show; gone to a show at The Horseshoe; gone to a show whose bill was filled with bands I'd never seen before. Friday night, I kicked off Labour Day weekend by addressing all three of these things by seeing London's Male Bonding , Austin's Love Inks and locals Neon Windbreaker and Huddle . At the 'Shoe. In case that wasn't clear. This isn't to say I had no backstory with the bands. I [...]

The Coppertone If you're a fan of blues rock, particularly female-fronted acts, then you will simply have to come down to the Horseshoe Tavern tonight as two of Toronto's finest blues rock bands Bella Clava and The Coppertone perform. Also on the bill will be Monster Truck and Indian Handcrafts. Have a listen to some of The Coppertone's fine work here: Hymns for the Hollow by BedlamMGT
Part musician, part dramatist, all original, it's Allie Hughes. The Toronto multi-discipline artist is performing a free show tonight at the Horseshoe Tavern. This is likely to be here last gig for a while as she finalizes her debut album. It's not quite now or never, but it may feel a bit like it. Also on the bill tonight are Revelstoke, Rouge, and Nash. The first act is on at 9:00pm with

Frank Yang Sunday night's Crooked Fingers show had a number of things going against it. For starters, it was a Sunday night. The Sunday night of a long weekend. The Sunday night of a long weekend during Pride. But what it had going for it was that it was a Crooked Fingers show. But even for the Eric Bachmann faithful, the show had the stacked against it somewhat for what it wasn't, and that's an Archers Of Loaf show. Indeed, only the need to transport gear for [...]

Joe Purdy is a storyteller armed with immense musical talent — a crucial combination for a folk-based singer-songwriter. With emotionally driven lyrics that speak of loved ones, old friends, and running away (amongst other things), his songs always manage to strike a chord with me. On Sunday, he performed a brooding set that left the Horseshoe crowd completely satisfied. Opening for Purdy were his touring companions, The Milk Carton Kids . Although this two piece band is only six weeks old, I was still impressed by their set and felt their music set the tempo for [...]

Glen and I got to the Horseshoe just before the Suuns set while PS I Love You were still playing, another band I absolutely don't understand why is so popular right now because not only did they name their band after a really bad Hilary Swank movie, there is really not anything special about their music. It's basically like Wolf Parade but less interesting and with more obnoxious vocals because lead man Paul Saulnier really can't pull off the whole off-key whiny thing the way Spencer Krug can. Yet the kids still went wild for this band, which is basically [...]
Today is perfectly lovely with a bright, warm sun and a breeze to keep the heat at bay. It will be in the 702s today and during the rest of the week. The inside back of the house, though, is still rather chilly. The cool nights hold sway until the sun hits the windows in the afternoon. It was coffee and papers on the deck today. Gracie slept in the shade while I enjoyed the morning. The birds sang and the leaves rustled when the breeze blew. My fountain is a quiet one which gives me a feeling of contentment. [...]
