Toronto - Cuff The Duke has been around for a few years now, but one question still nags at the brain of many a fan (or me at least) - what exactly does it mean to "cuff the duke?" Legend has it that the band found a t-shirt in some Oshawa thrift store with that very phrase written on it, but the exact meaning remains mysterious. We'll probably never know. What we do know is that Cuff The Duke is a solid alt country band and that they just played two packed nights at the Horseshoe promoting their new [...]
Ontario band Cuff The Duke have been riding on a wave of momentum recently following the October release of their new album Morning Comes , their first record off Paper Bag Records . To celebrate this success, the band has booked not one, but two nights at the Horseshoe Tavern this weekend. Courtesy of Collective Concerts , we have a pair of tickets to give away. CBC Radio loves them, so should you! To win, do one of three things 1) Retweet this post 2) Email panic@panicmanual.com [...]

Ottawa's The Love Machine will be hitting up The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto on November 15th to celebrate the vinyl release of their latest album Sweater Weather . The Love Machine has been named best band in 2011 by I(Heart)Music.net and it's easy to see why. The four-piece are burgeoning and Sweater Weather is the push to a synergistic pop, with a range of mosaic pop tunes with feverish and elevated hooks, and weaves through a collective artistry that's uniquely their own. [...]

Toronto - As I walked into The Horseshoe shortly before Chateau Marmont started their set, I couldn't help but notice the sparse turnout. Not that I expected anything different - two French bands who are not exactly household names playing on a Sunday night while at the same time, Dum Dum Girls were playing Lee's Palace, Trentemoller were playing The Phoenix , and of course, for those who'd rather watch TV, the second season premiere of The Walking Dead was on as well. But as they say, the show must go on, and go on it did. [...]

Xavier Boyer, Médéric Gontier, Sylvain Marchand, Pedro Resende, Raphaël Léger & Julien Barbagallo are otherwise known as tahiti 80 , one of the most seductive live acts I've had the pleasure to see this year. They also have a following that I would describe as "intimate and loyal", possibly the most attractive fanbase an independent artist can ever achieve. Around since the late 902s, tahiti 80 is one of those band names you often hear, but may confuse with numerous others. I myself thought that I might be going to see Air Cuba that night, [...]

This past weekend I saw Mudhoney live at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, Ontario (September 10, 2011). This is my writeup of that show, complete with multimedia effects. Yes, Mudhoney are still around (they put out an album as recently as 2008 called The Lucky Ones ). More importantly, they still rock with the power of a billion suns. I have not been to a real rock show like this in years (not counting last year's Superchunk [...]

Toronto - As I walked into The Horseshoe Tavern for Male Bonding's Friday night show, I immediately noticed that Dinosaur Jr. was playing over the PA. This was notable for a couple of reasons - for one thing, Dinosaur Jr. is a great band. But it was also notable because the London band's latest album Endless Now was recorded in the same studio and with the same producer as Dino Jr's Where You Been . This probably isn't just a coincidence as Male Bonding's noisy punk stylings sound like they could have come from some time in [...]

Husband and wife duo Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry, otherwise known as the Handsome Furs , played the second of two shows at the Horseshoe Tavern on Tuesday night. They were joined by fellow Montreal band Parlovr (pronounced "parlour"). Both bands managed to make an already hot Horseshoe even hotter. Parlovr That Parlovr found themselves touring with Handsome Furs -- and, more specifically, Dan Boeckner -- doesn't seem like an accident. One of their songs, "Hell, Heaven," had a guitar part that made the song [...]

Toronto – Today marks the start of the Toronto Jazz Festival . For the next ten days, the city will be teeming with fantastic musicians playing venues large and small. You can check out some of the highlights of the line-up here . In anticipation of the festival, I had a chance to chat with the guitarist of soul/jazz/funk outfit Soulive , Erik Krasno . We talked about their latest album, Rubber Soulive , and also dove into how new technologies like do-it-yourself studios, grassroots record labels, and the internets [...]

I really like this shot I took of The Luyas on June 16, 2011. They still amaze me with their live shows. There is something about this shot that is really cool to see. Listen to Too Beautiful To Work

Toronto - Brother have recently been touted by the British music press as one of the "next big thing" buzz bands. They first caught my attention back in December on a trip to London when I picked up a copy of NME and read a feature on them. The band gave a pretty good interview, bringing up the ghost of Oasis (while taking care to stress that they don't sound like Oasis), slagging off fellow Brit buzz bands of the moment The Vaccines and Mona, and offering up ridiculous, cocky quotes like "we self-elected ourselves to be the [...]

Tuesday nights at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern are known as Edge 102.12s Dave Bookman's Nu Music Nites. Last Tuesday night (April 5th), I took a stroll down to the 'shoe with my friend Zal to check out Young The Giant. Their set was no more than 40 minutes long, but the crowd was going wild for these Cali alt-rockers. Their self-titled debut album was released last October on Roadrunner Records. "Strings" was one of my favourite songs from the evening. Young The Giant - Strings For More... [...]

As promised, here is AWmusic's interview with William Fitzsimmons. It was such a pleasure meeting and having the opportunity to hear this man speak about music and life. He is one interesting man. The interview was conducted by my good friend, Zal. WF= William Fitzsimmons (in case you thought it meant someone else) Zal: Thank you Mr. Fitzsimmons for allowing us to interview you today. How are you? WF: Good, thanks for asking. Zal: For some of our [...]

Toronto - The Joy Formidable exude an incredible amount of energy and intensity in their live performance. One might even say it was formidable if one was given to making cheesy references to the band's name in their reviews. Guilty as charged, I suppose. Opening with The Everchanging Spectrum Of A Lie , they played their first number as if it were their last. Starting out full throttle with an epic number, they pretty much maintained that level throughout their performance. Several songs descended into waves of noise and feedback bolstered by powerhouse drumming that occasionally reached [...]
