Without a solid track record, standing out in today's shitstorm of new music is tough. That's why you need to ignore a lot of these new bands coming out. Of all the bands that did the usual post SXSW swing through Toronto, Howler was the only band I saw in Austin that I decided to catch on this side of the border. Their brand of no nonsense surf meets garage rock coupled with a truly entertaining live showcase in Austin got me excited. The title of this young Minnesota band's most recent release, America Give Up , says more about their approach to music than labeling them as "garage rock" or "dirty rock n' roll." The aspirations of Howler's music is nostalgia, for something in the past.
