Without a solid track record, standing out in today's shitstorm of new music is tough. That's why you need to ignore a lot of these new bands coming out. If you don't, you're going to drown—there's way too much new stuff out there to get into it all. That makes it even more exciting when a new band comes out and immediately impresses. It's happening a lot lately. A couple of P&P's own put together this list for Complex of 20 New Bands To Watch Out For, and there's some really great stuff in there like [...]
![HOWLER AND 1,2,3 HIT THE STAGE AT MERCURY LOUNGE LAST WEEK [PHOTOS]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4218500_lg.jpg)
Photo credit: Karp The number of amazing shows in NYC last week was daunting. I doubt you were able to see every performance you wanted to, even if you're the lucky owner of a Delorean, TARDIS or whatever they call that phone booth from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. I nearly wore myself out. Amidst the madness, I managed to catch super fun Minneapolis band Howler (@howler_band) at Mercury Lounge on Wednesday night. Their debut album, America Give Up , released on Rough Trade in January, has been occupying some [...]

MP3: Strangers in Daylight - Forsythe MP3: Howler - Back of Your Neck Letters of Transit , the debut album from Strangers in Daylight, has been the most pleasant surprise so far this year when it comes to Columbus releases. I'll just state what I said in a recent Other Paper review : " Letters of Transit represents a change in direction from the original spy-rock vision of Strangers, trading in trippy, Pink Floyd tunes for a hook-driven, Britpop base... Eight tracks [...]

Of all the bands that did the usual post SXSW swing through Toronto, Howler was the only band I saw in Austin that I decided to catch on this side of the border. Their brand of no nonsense surf meets garage rock coupled with a truly entertaining live showcase in Austin got me excited. They had a certain swagger and thing about them that had me thinking they were going to be big. Seeing them at the Drake was a no brainer. Much like their songs, this review will be short and sweet. First [...]
[Debut Album] Howler - America Give Up // Released earlier this year under London-based Rough Trade records, these 5 Minneapolis-dwelling Minnesotans are making some catchy indie pop filled with ’60s tones and a splash of punk rock. “Back of your Neck” (video above) is the first single. The title of this young Minnesota band's most recent release, America Give Up , says more about their approach to music than labeling them as "garage rock" or "dirty rock n' roll." The aspirations of Howler's music is nostalgia, for something in the past. Whereas their EP This One's Different was much more sugar-coated pop, this album is darker, has more bite, and is more influenced by past works from Jesus and Mary Chain, Bruce Springsteen, and others. The whole premise, and assumption, of lead singer Jordan Gatesmith is that there hasn't been a great rock- pure [...]

So this is goodbye... I officially declare SxSW 2012 done with this collection of pics pulled in from showcases. While this isn't every band I saw, it is every band that I happened to enjoy seeing, other than the Night at the Belmont shots already posted. I still have trouble remembering what happened and when. Is it time to register for next year yet? Click through and I will share a few thoughts and you will see shots of Solander , Django Django , Blondes , Class Actress , [...]
Last Friday's (3/23) show at the Echo was beyond legendary. Howler, Static Jacks, and TOPS came together in perfect harmony to deliver a seemingly never-ending display of skill, talent, and entertainment. The Echo is privy to lots of indie-alternative acts, ... Continued

By Bruce Rave B3SCI's Mike and I recent enjoyed a hang with Jordan Gatesmith of Howler before the band's hot set at The Echo in LA last Friday. Howler is one of the most talked-about in the world right now and America Give Up is one of my fave 2012 albums so far. The interview special will air on Go Deep With Bruce Rave today, around 2p Pacific, 5p Eastern, and 10p GMT. Jordan is a very down to earth [...]

Frank Yang We're almost done, I swear. The writeup for the Friday night of SXSW 2012 is over here . Tashaki Miyaki - Mysterious Los Angeles duo who perform as a trio and prefer nothing to be known about them besides that they dig The Velvet Underground, Everly Brothers and Jesus & Mary Chain who've just released the equally mysteriously-titled EP . Now that we're a full week out of the outrageous/incredible festival known as SXSW, those four days and nights of music seems more like a dream than a real experience. Despite this, it simply wouldn't feel right if we didn't look back a reflect. So here we are, deciding how to best culminate this year's SXSW. What better way than to simply tell you the ten bands that really kicked our asses. The bands that floored us, shocked us, and rocked us. Photo [...]

Review by Chris Gedos PHOTO: Jordan Gatesmith of Howler The only way to accurately judge Howler’s debut album is to break it down and critique each individual variable, such as songs, production, musicianship, originality, etc., for to approach it otherwise forces one to harp upon Is This It . Not that America Give Up is trying to be The Strokes verbatim, but the two bands have already been so relentlessly linked by the populace that we’re [...]
Amongst the new additions are The Temper Trap - who will headline the Brighton Dome - Cloud nothings, Haim, The Black Belles and Gaz Mccombes.

Oh wow, I can't begin to tell you how excited I am to finally get out to a live show tonight. It's been 3 weeks since we moved to Vancouver and this is the first chance I have had to get out to see some music...can't ask for a better band and venue to get the ball rolling. SXSW has come and gone. Once again, we have survived. The Panic Manual crew even did a road trip through New Orleans to Memphis after the fact to prove it. Nevertheless, it'll be another twelve months til we hit up Austin again and so for now, we can only relive these memories. In this engaging round-table discussion, we discussed some of our favorite things about SXSW. Favorite SXSW Moment? Paul : There were a few ...
