Frank Yang Ostensibly, SXSW is a festival meant to expose new music to the world and vice versa, so the fact that I'd spent the past evening and afternoon seeing established artists - I think Springsteen counts as established - rather than seeking out something new wasn't lost on me. So the festival's Friday night was devoted wholly to discovery. Onwards! Los Angeles' Tashaki Miyaki are working the "mysterious" angle, declining to offer information about their identities - she sings and drums and goes by Lucy, [...]

photo by Brittney Bollay After presenting 15 exclusive sessions at Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop in Austin during SXSW, we're now back in Seattle furiously sorting through and editing the incredible amount of amazing footage to share with you. Here's a first glimpse at these electrifying performances, featuring the rich textures of Montreal's The Barr Brothers , the retro-rock of Minneapolis' Howler , the insanely catchy pop of San Francisco's Imperial Teen , and the intensely dramatic emotion of Austin favorites Shearwater . Look for more soon!

I've always been a bit suspicious of people that wear gold jackets. Well I haven't really, but if I had given it any thought at all, that's almost certainly the conclusion I would've come to. Just look at these schmucks . Is that the kind of person you'd like to be labelled as? Deep down for a lot of us the answer is probably yes, but if we can abide to the conventions of social norms, i'd appreciate it if you could all shake your heads vigorously so that my point makes sense. That being: Fortunately, Man Made may [...]
This is a very packed picture post. But it's SXSW...what did you expect? So here's a fraction of a fraction of all the musicians, madness, and maniacs from SXSW 2012.

Howler is Minneapolis based band that received a decent amount of buzz for their debut album called America Give Up. One song that stood out to me from the album was Back Of Your Neck. This surf rock inspired tune caught my ear immediately with its sharp riffs and fun vibe. Check out the song below:

Lo de hoy es Austin. Con más de 33 bandas viajando desde todos los puntos de Estados Unidos hasta Texas para dar shows en SXSW, la Paste creó esta infografía para mostrarnos más o menos cómo se ven las rutas de cada banda que va a tocar en las fiestas patrocinadas por la revista en su camino a la meca musical por lo menos por algunos días.

photo by Brittney Bollay Minneapolis rockers Howler first caught the attention of a Rough Trade executive in 2011, when shortly after hearing a demo he hopped on a plane to Minnesota and promptly signed the band to the UK label. Later in the year they released their debut EP, This One's Different , and early in 2012 they released their debut full-length, America Give Up . Led by 19-year-old Jordan Gatesmith, Howler play youthful, brash garage rock filled with breezy oooweeoooh harmonies that belie their Midwestern roots. Howler's garage rock is nothing [...]

Every March, the music industry packs it's bags and moves to Austin, Texas for South By Southwest, a festival that manages to get bigger and bigger each year despite it's already gargantuan/beastly size. Given the overwhelming number of performances by over 1,400 acts, we've compiled a short list of ten bands that you simply must see. Many of these bands may not be on your radar right now, but with some luck, they'll come out of SXSW as indie household names, gaining more traction and playing bigger venues and as a result of this four day period [...]

And for the second year in a row, KEXP will broadcast live from Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop and host 15 amazing bands including some up-and-comers like Howler and Of Monsters and Men , some old favorites like The [...]

Let's turn this into a teaching moment.Minnesota Give Up. No, that's not the title of Howler's next album, nor is it the slogan for the eyebrow-raising marketing campaign the band rolled out last wee

It's March 1st, which means we have officially reached the month of SXSW.

Polyvinyl Usually when an interesting press release shows up in my inbox, the contents show up ad nauseum in my RSS, Twitter, Facebook, whatever over the next few hours - such is the nature of the press cycle in the digital age. But one of the best pieces of news over the last few days, at least for me, hasn't yet found its way into the internet echo chamber, and that's the anouncement of the return of Saturday Looks Good To Me . Not that I'm entirely surprised; the Ann Arbor, Michigan [...]
