1. Hulu has more than a million paying subscribers . Still no word on who's going to buy them out, but the company has a real opportunity to capitalize on Netflix's recent mistakes. 2. Speaking of Netflix, they just signed a deal with Dreamworks Animation , which is the first time a major Hollywood content provider went with online streaming over pay tv for distribution. 3. How Facebook is Annexing the Web : Facebook is confirming the fact that it's the new and undisputed "social operating system" on today's [...]

Netflix stocks took a big hit from two significant changes to the company's service today. First, their controversial new pricing structure went into effect. Customers who want both DVDs through the mail and unlimited streaming will see a 60 percent price increase. Perhaps worse was the other news of the day: premium cable channel Starz announced that it will not renew its distribution deal with Netflix, which will expire in February 2012. The cable channel supplies Neflix with both Sony and Walt Disney films so the blow is significant, though Netflix says that Starz only accounts [...]
This is the least surprising news, but still worth mentioning. According to TorrentFreak : "It's been a week since Fox stopped offering free access to its TV-shows the day after they air on television. The TV-studio took this drastic step in the hope of getting more people to watch their shows live and thus make more revenue. TV-viewers, however, are outraged by the decision and have massively turned to pirated sources to watch their favorite shows." To slant this as outrage is a bit of hyperbole. It's just unfortunate that people want to watch their shows immediately [...]
From Deadline : "Today come reports that shed a little light: AllThingsD quotes sources saying that the auction closes at the end of next week and that bids of "at least" $1.5 billion are expected." This is totally not the case, but sometimes it feels like the entire fate of Internet video and cutting the cable cord hinges on the Hulu sale. Obviously, that's not the case. Tweet
Tweet Look out Girl Talk - Jimmy Fallon, Justin Timberlake and The Roots are about to make it big! Their "History of Rap Part 13 went viral, so of course, it was time for an encore performance. I've been pleasantly surprised with the show's selection of music performances and Jimmy Fallon's own musical talents (who else can mock Dave Matthews and sound better than the he?). And their "History of Rap Part 23 is just as fun and entertaining. Maybe [...]
Who would win in a fight between iPad and cable/satellite operators? The question is really more like when. The small tablet device, closer to a remote control than a television or computer, has been placed into an interesting pickle. It's the first massively adopted device that plays the role of ...
So the world knows Hulu is for sale . Peter Kafka insists the question is not who's interested in buying Hulu, but rather, what exactly is Hulu selling? More specifically, what kind of content licenses are Hulu's three broadcast owners — News Corp.'s Fox*, Disney's ABC, and Comcast's NBC — willing to part with? Because it's the TV shows from those three companies that gives Hulu almost all of its value. And while those shows have helped Hulu build a big Web business very quickly — Hulu has said [...]

News broke this afternoon that a mysterious suitor had approached Hulu about a purchase offer . Except nobody knew who it was. But one thing that was clear was that Hulu was seriously considering the offer. Unfortunately, late in the day, the LA Times reported that it was Yahoo that was the mysterious suitor . Fuck. No. The only thing Yahoo knows how to do is purchase companies and suck everything that is great from their soul and let them wither on the vine until there is nothing left but a rotting corpse. Just ask Delicious [...]
There isn't anything terribly new in this LA Times article about Hulu , but it's a nice reminder that the service it out fighting the good fight to rid the world of cable television. This summer, Hulu's exclusive rights to distribute ABC, Fox and NBC programming online begin to expire. The media companies have been dragging their feet on renewals until they resolve the questions surrounding the next iteration of Hulu. What's baffling is how ABC, NBC and FOX continually act like they don't own Hulu? They seem more threatened by [...]

The Meriwether project, originally titled Chicks and Dicks , is described as a [...]
The future of television is a subject of great interest around here. Specifically, the technology used to deliver that content, how that content is accessed by consumers and how it is subsidized. Two things caught my attention and they both sort of fall under the same umbrella, though they aren't specifically tied to one another. 1. Hulu has lost its way, mired by conflict between the comany's leadership team trying to compete with Netflix and the site's owners wanting to protect their pocketbooks and content. Hulu's CEO, Jason Kilar, laid out his vision for television's future [...]
If you're not worried about the future of Hulu after reading this WSJ article , then you probably don't care about the business of television, living your life without a cable subscription service, or how Hulu - which is pretty awesome for watching online tv - seems to succeed in spite itself. It's not a pretty picture. Also, I'm not sure when "free with advertisements" became the same thing as free. But the Hulu executive, Chase Carey, who belongs to the quote above, seems to think that Hulu should show advertisements and charge a subscription fee to [...]

Hulu will not be going public (anytime soon at least) despite earlier talks of a $2 billion dollar IPO. Sources point to Hulu's lack of long-term rights for the majority of the content it streams online. Without going public, Hulu will be left to its own methods to generate funding and ...
