2012 has been a brutal year for those of us who love soul, jazz, funk and related music. In a short span of time, we've lost Jimmy Castor, Johnny Otis, Etta James and Don Cornelius (apologies to anyone I've overlooked). As tributes from musicians, DJs, writers, etc pour in (and deservedly so); it's refreshing to [...]

In high school I used to take the CTA Eastbound Blue Line from Racine to Washington to catch the Number 6 bus home every day. Now, for those familiar with the janky ass Chicago Transit Authority and their routes, you might ask "why go two stops past Jackson to catch the number 6?" Two reasons: 1) if I got off at Jackson with the rest of you jerk-offs I'd be one of you jerk-offs standing on a bus in rush hour traffic instead of one of the cool cats actually sat down in a seat and 2) I loved listening [...]

Zamn! Anyone who's ever had the right amount of elixir flowing through the veins, coupled with visions of someone they deem to be highly attractive knows the power of "SpottieOttieDopaliscious." [...]
There has been a ton of great music dropping over the past week or so, and I am still getting around to sharing it here on Potholes. This fabulous Hypnotic Brass Ensemble cover of Outkast's horn-heavy "Spottieottiedopalicious" is one of those pieces. Ignited by the fury of brass, this Outkast original is brought to new live heights. I'd love to see these guys continue to push the limits of hip-hop, possibly with the release of a new cover album in the near future. Hit the skip to hear the cover.
The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble have just released this interpretation of the Outkast classic Spottieottiedopaliscious. Stream below or download it for free! Download audio file (03-03.-Spottie-1.mp3)

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - Spottie by ArtDontSleep Sly little drop from the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, a cover of Outkast's ' Spottieottiedopaliscious'. What can be said that you wouldn't expect from HBE, it's a jazz funk orchestra reworking with a bit of hip hop erm.... awww man I ain't using that word. You know what I mean

I'm pleased to introduce (to those of you who didn't already know) to the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. This 9-piece Chicago ensemble is a veritable "band of brothers" as 8 of the 9 members are sons of Phil Cohran the legendary jazz trumpeter. The 8 brothers all play horns and are joined by Gabriel "Manuels" Wallace on drums. These guys are tight and have played with some of the best musicians of our times. Enjoy these tracks below.
