That excellent play on words aside, THIS IS ÖUTRAGEÖUS. Motörhead's quite delicious Australian Shiraz will not be sold in Iceland because the band is synonymous with being a bit naughty. The fear is that the sale of Lemmy & co's fruity number could result in leading our North Atlantic friends into a life of angry, speed-fuelled debauchery. Cripes. The State Alcohol and Tobacco Company of Iceland (ÁTVR), which is government-owned and is also the only shop you can buy alcohol from (not including pubs and bars), has decreed that it will not [...]

Indie/folk band Of Monsters And Men have been making a lot of headway in the past couple of years; winning Iceland's national battle of bands known as Músíktilraunir (roughly translating to "music experiments") in 2010 to get the ball rolling. They followed up their triumph by getting international airplay with their single "Little Talks" from their Into The Woods EP (below) and landing a deal with a major label. To solidify their presence on the world stage, the band has chosen April 3rd 2012 as the American release date for [...]
Ask anyone what they think an Icelandic act usually sounds like, and they'll likely be thinking of something like a Brueghel landscape soundtracked by Scandinavian minimal ambient. On the other hand, Orphic Oxtra, a collective of 13 musicians from Reykjavik, draws inspiration far away from that more typical scene, laying out thrusting grooves of Balkan and klezmer-influenced orchestral music, while carrying all kinds of both traditional and unusual free-form jazz sections. "Skeletons Having Sex On a Tin Roof" is a loose reinterpretation of Icelandic hardcore band Swords of Chaos ' track of the same name. The video stars the [...]

</embed> Bjork is the Queen and Prime Minister of Ice Land. She is also the Michael Jackson of Iceland. She is also the Amelia Earhart of Iceland because she is the first person in Icelandic history to fly away in a 'metal sky bird', which is what they call airplanes there. For some reason, Stephen Colbert 'booked her' on his show, probably to produce an internet meme of a crazy old lady with a red nest on her head. Nothing funnie or insightful is shared in their convo, but I guess listening to [...]

Of Monsters of Men is an Icelandic indie/folk band who have been riding the elevator of success with "Little Talks" to the top. This is a stripped down version of that song which was recorded live by KEXP 90.3 out of Seattle in the bands living room from Iceland back in late 2010. The band is still gaining momentum from this song and now seems destin to join the likes of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros as a band with a cult following. "Little Talks" blends horns with a playful chanting in the chorus and is worth a listen before your friends [...]
Mr Fogg is good. Not only is his song 'Stay Out Of The Sun' superb, it's got a great video (as seen above) and you can get it for free from his website . I asked him to choose a few songs that he likes to listen to and these are the ones he came up with. Listening to them gives you an insight into how Mr Fogg has come to sound the way he does. It's enlightening and thoroughly enjoyable. So without further ado, here is Mr Fogg's selection... [...]
In the long ago days that we called 2006, the stars aligned, money appeared and I secured a press pass to Iceland Airwaves. I flew alone to Reykjavik and took in the festival. It's always a well curated affair that takes over most of the small 101 district. The charm lies in the close proximity of all the venues, the beauty of the city and the kindness of the locals. The first night I met a couple who offered up great conversation and a couch to crash on, as my hotel was a bit of [...]

For such a small country, Iceland has produced a surprising number of excellent artists. From Bjork to Mum to Seabear to Olaf Arnalds to Sigur Ros, it's really extraordinary the amount of wonderful music that comes from that island. This last mix of 2011 is an Icelandic journey. All the music is created by artists from Iceland. The brilliant idea for it came from loyal listener, Kevin. I wasn't sure how much music of Iceland I had in my collection but I was surprised to find quite a [...]

Sometimes you just need your definition of pretty to be a simple song of hope sung in another language. In this case, the other language is Icelandic and the title of the song means does actually mean "hope". Lay Low is Lovísa Sigrúnardóttir, and while two of her previous albums were in english, this icelandic album is somehow more intriguing. You can stream the entire album on soundcloud .

Tweet Low Roar have created a mournfully sober yet artfully resigned soundtrack for a cold winter void of hope and shaded with longing. To draw from the main nerve in sadness and actually turn it into such a beautiful caliginous sound is rare and poignant and beautiful. Although even darker, " Friends Make Garbage, Good Friends Take It Out " has a sound very similar to " Dust Of Retreat " from Margot And The Nuclear So And Sos , [...]
It's been a busy year for Joshua Epstein and Daniel Zott from Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. After the release of their debut It's A Corporate World in spring/summer, the guys played lots of shows in Europe and in the US. While beeing in Iceland back in October for a festival gig, they also visited a remoted 1930-founded eco village , where recorded this outstanding video clip. That's what they say about it: So many things this year have been an absolute privilege for us. This particular one [...]

Ryan Karazija is Low Roar, an Iceland mased project. Adding players Júlíus Óttar Björgvinsson and Katie Buckley to the live show, Low Roar slowly reveals a beautiful and powerful set consisting of loops and layers of instrumentation including guitar, harp, pump organ, percussion and keys – at times, a combination capable of evoking tears. Low Roar is set to play Iceland Airwaves and tour the US in November. (Indigenous press-release). Download Tonight, Tonight, Tonight [...]

Iceland's Ryan Karazija (ex-Audrye Sessions) performs and records under the name Low Roar, which is a rather fitting name for how his music quietly knocks you off your feet. He recently released his eponymous debut as Low Roar, and, I must admit, after two songs it's slowly becoming one of my favorite releases of 2011. Check out those two tracks below. "Give Up" is a rather poignant piece, especially for how the gentle acoustic character of the song interacts with the visuals. It's a snapshot of a man who seems incredibly lonesome, but also [...]

Watching Hammer House's horror output now is not the same as it used to be. When I first encountered them back in the 70s they were genuinely scary. I distinctly remember watching one of the TV series and being shocked shitless by a werewolf behind some curtains. Today, viewing occurs with wry smile on your face (although Quatermass and the Pit still disturbs). And this sense of the sardonic is very much apparent with Dead Skeletons's Dead Magick – death, horror and the supernatural are encountered with tongue firmly ensconced in cheek. At least [...]
