The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) released its 2012 report this week, confirming that the music industry may finally have a reason to be cautiously optimistic abou... Continue reading "8 Things We Learned from the IFPI's 2012 Report" >
"Give people a choice, and they might pay for digital music, after all." — Peter Kafka, All Things D, January 23, 2012. Damn, that Peter Kafka at the Wall Street Journal is fast. He beat me to the much-anticipated IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) 2012 report on the state ...
There's some interesting figures in the IFPI report into digital music , reported by Music Week. You remember piracy, don't you? According to Nielsen/IFPI figures from November 2011, the percentage of internet users accessing at least one unlicensed site monthly stood at 27% in Europe and 28% worldwide – with around half using peer-to-peer networks. That doesn't really sound very much, does it? Over 70% of internet users not even visiting an "unlicensed site" (whatever that is) at all. But that's averages. What's happening in piracy hotspots? In some countries, the rate of [...]

Now, I'm sure that Maria Martin-Prat is a fine, upstanding person. But someone who has taken money from the copyright industry - as Deputy General Counsel and Director of Legal Policy and Regulatory Affairs for the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry - should not be running the European Commission's copyright unit . Given that she will be responding to requests from a cartel which paid her well in the very recent past, how can her judgements be trusted? The only way she could do her job would be to excuse herself from any decision relating to [...]
Unsurprising news of the day: the global music industry has collapsed , and the RIAA's international arm, the IFPI is blaming lizards. Alright, it's blaming piracy . Did you guess? "The demand for new music seems as insatiable and diverse as ever, and record companies continue to meet it," said Frances Moore, chief executive of the IFPI. "But they are operating at only a fraction of their potential because of a difficult environment dominated by piracy." There's not even a sniff that the music industry might have been hit by, you know, the global [...]
The Digital Music Report states that still 95% of all downloads reamain illegal! People are buying more music, but the damage caused by piracy will cost until 2015 more than a million creative jobs. The international record industry has called on governments around the world to fight stronger against illegal ...
The IFPI - which is the RIAA pretending to be an international body - has come up with a new plan which it reckons will bring about an end to online music piracy. This time, it's going to get British police and the credit card companies to do the job for it . The idea is that it'll find a website which is flogging tracks online; details will be passed to the police; public money will be spent investigating the sites and, if the police agree there's something dodgy going on, Mastercard and Visa [...]
The RIAA and the IFPI - two entirely separate organisations, albeit run by the same cartel - has got in a bit of a huff as Google has asked them to pay for finding possibly unlicensed files on the internet: The burden of finding the offending links has however always rested in the hands of the people who wish them taken down. Given what a time consuming process that has proven to be, the RIAA and the IFPI asked Google to "provide a means to help them track down pirated material more efficiently," in the words [...]

Despite the fact that at the end of 2007 Radiohead released with much hype one of the decade's musical milestones In Rainbows , all for free on the band's website, it seems like the ghost of the RIAA is still here to haunt us. The latest attack on file sharing is addressed to bloggers that posted in parts or integral the In Rainbows album, even though the record is probably most known for its innovative free download release. As such, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) are [...]
Michael M suggested this Boing Boing headline might be the headline of the year: Music industry spokesman loves child porn The story comes from Pirate MEP Christian Engstrom 's website: "Child pornography is great," the speaker at the podium declared enthusiastically. "It is great because politicians understand child pornography. By playing that card, we can get them to act, and start blocking sites. And once they have done that, we can get them to start blocking file sharing sites". The venue was a seminar organized by the American Chamber [...]
In an era where the necessity of major record labels comes into question repeatedly, so it follows the labels have decided to insist their role in the music industry has not diminished. According to BBC 6Music News , The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) blasted in a report the "myth" that artists can make it without a label. The CEO of the Featured Artists' Coalition, Jeremy Silver, poses that artists can do fine by themselves. "The combination of touring, playing live, and working online is really starting to make a difference," he said. "Increasingly we're [...]

So, now I understand why all these music blogs, that were hosted on Blogger, were taken down by Google a few weeks ago. Google's official statement was that if they received numerous DMCA complaints about a a specific blog they would automatically remove the blog without any notice. That's all fine and dandy, and in some respects should happen, but not if the RIAA and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) are deliberately expediting the process. By expediting the process I'm only referring to what has happened to Boom Boom Chik in the past week, and [...]
Having seen a massive pile of public cash be burned through investigating Oink, only for the case to end in no convictions, the IFPI has now decided to spend its own money instead. John Kennedy is insisting the fight "will go on" , although given that so far, "the fight" has been a publicly-funded legal process, what he means is that the fight will now start. Kennedy said that the IFPI would consider civil proceedings against Ellis in order to recover the costs. If they do win any money back, [...]
The Guardian had a piece on its business pages yesterday allowing the major labels to bemoan their lot and demand something must be done. Again. This bit was interesting, though: While the IFPI noted some success in growing sales in countries with new legal measures, notably Sweden and South Korea, it launched a withering attack on governments it accused of turning a blind eye to piracy. Spain in particular came under fire for a "culture of state-tolerated apathy towards illegal file-sharing". "Spain has the worst piracy problem of any major market in [...]
MUSIC NEWS - Once again, worldwide recorded music sales fell sharply for another year, this time by 10 percent in 2009, the NYTimes reported. And once again, digital music sales increases were unable to cover the losses as the drop in physical CD revenues fell sharply. Global digital music sales, that include revenue from the Internet and mobile phones, increased by 12 percent to $4.2 billion and made up 27 percent of the recording industry revenue, said the industry trade group, International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. But with CD sales falling 16 percent worldwide, the industry was reduced to $15.8 billion [...]
