I came across today's Videodrome entry last month while digging around in search of an Ike & The Rhythm Kings performance I'd previously stumbled upon (late) one night. I never did find the Ike clip, but this "live performance" did more than suffice. And yes, do note the quotes surrounding the words 'live' and 'performance'. [...]

Here are 5 great covers of Phil Spector songs to listen to while awaiting a verdict which will most likely (fingers crossed!) keep Mr. Spector in jail.
(I can't stop loving you) I've made up my mind To live in memory of the lonesome times (I can't stop wanting you) It's useless to say So I'll just live my life in dreams of yesterday (Dreams of yesterday) Those happy hours that we once knew Tho' long ago, they still make me blue They say that time heals a broken heart But time has stood still since we've been apart Yesterday I posted up a [...]

"What, the show for kids?" my colleague, the one with an extravagant collection of adidas tracksuit jackets, replied when I asked if she watched Glee . It's a regular prejudice to confuse Glee with High School Musical , and therefore to presume that the interpretations of the songs covered on Glee must be intrinsically inferior to their originals. The former presumption can be ascribed to benign ignorance; the latter claim can be made only by people who hate music. Fact is, in many cases the Glee versions are equal to their originals, [...]
Phil Spector's Wall Of Sound turns 50.
Taken from Confined To Soul, Ike Turner's 1973 record with the Family Vibes (alternately/previously known as the Kings of Rhythm), "Garbage Man" serves as both an example of Turner at his funkiest and, yes, funniest. It's worth a listen for the the clavinet work alone...or, as I so eloquently described it to a friend recently, [...]

Christmas got funky, Christmas got soul! The analytical eagle-eyed reader may have deduced, by astute observation of the post's title, that this year's Christmas mix is dominated by soul music, and that there will be at least one more compilation. Indeed, there will be at least a second mix of Christmas soul tracks from the heyday of the genre – the 1960s and '70s. I have held back a few cracking numbers anyway. Still, this is a really great bunch of songs. Whoever I got the utterly gorgeous opening track from, I am particularly grateful to. The Flirtations, one of [...]
'Glee' came back this week with the episode 'Duets' and just like the title, the TV series showed off some hot collaborations. The episode made covers of Ike & Tina Turner's 'River Deep, Mountain High', Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat's 'Lucky', Elton John and Kiki Dee's 'Don't Got Breaking My Heart', the song 'Sing!' from the musical 'A Chorus Line' and a mash-up of 'Happy Days are Here Again' and 'Get Happy' as performed by Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand on the 'Judy Garland Show'. Chris Colfer's character Kurt also sang 'Le Jazz Hot' from the musical 'Victor/Victoria'. I was [...]
Heading east on Santa Monica Blvd, just after the Blues Explosion's set last night at the Troubadour, the conversation turned towards all things Jon Spencer related (it was that kind of show). Naturally the discussion landed on Spencer's 90s collaboration with his wife, Christina Martinez, Boss Hog. The band's self-titled, major label, debut has a [...]

Hey folks, welcome to the March mix. I don't know if you've noticed yet, but March has been a great month for new music. In fact, there has been so much great new music, some of it has slipped by me without a chance for me to comment on it - including a number of great new tracks by MGMT, Drake and Neon Indian. Those tracks are all featured here, in addition to some of the other bands that have been stuck in my head this month. Basically, this mix is just that: a snapshot of [...]

mp3: Ike & Tina Turner - A Fool In Love Quite a landmark recording this one. It's the first time the amazing voice of Tina Turner was committed to wax. Legend has it that when the singer that Ike had originally intended to sing A Fool In Love, a man, didn't show up, Tina (known as Little Ann at the time) stepped up. Pregnant with Ike's child, she delivered a belting performance. Her voice is fully formed and ready to conquer. This record came out in 1960 and was an instant hit.

Funk brothers separated at birth? Or just Ike Turner being a cheeky liberator of one of Sly Stone's grooviest riffs? Sly 's Sing a Simple Song came out in 1969 on the Stand! album. One year later Ike & Tina Turner released The Hunter , a downright gutteral blues/soul/ r'n' b stomper of a record. The cover of the album sets the tone - Ike is wearing his best Beatles wig and Tina is dressed as some sort of Amazonian warrior princess. It's even better between the grooves - it wails, moans, bleeds and sounds [...]

We don't know about the rest of you ne'er-do-wells, but we're standing by our man David Letterman during this whole sex-with-employees/extortion mess. Having the National Organization for Women asking for your head on a platter can't be too much fun, y'know? But after a week of scandal and speculation, we've had enough time to reflect on what's happened and offer up some constructive ideas for how to lighten the mood around the Ed Sullivan Theater. We'd suggest that the Late Show 's ace bandleader, Paul Shaffer , incorporate a few new tracks into their already impressive [...]
