Chicago musicians Bob Nanna and Lauren LoPiccolo have united to create simple, but dreamy, acoustic pop ditties under the moniker Jack and Ace . "I'm Sorry That You are the Black Death" pairs delicately plucked guitar melodies with earnest lyrics about, what else, love. Jack and Ace prove that melancholy doesn't need to be so complicated to be effective. Nanna is better known for his work with influential post-hardcore (or emo, if you like) outfit Braid and Hey Mercedes. LoPiccolo previously teamed up with Nanna in the City on Film. [...]

Tweet vaso link So Andrew Bird played the Harro East Ballroom here in Rochester this past fall, and I was rather excited to see him perform, having never seen his play previously. In the end, I was disappointed; Bird seemed to just be more willing to dick around for two hours than actually playing his material; on the whole, the concert was haphazard and shambolic. Despite the fact that I bought Armchair Apocrypha on vinyl that night, I [...]

There are the essential albums that need to be in everyone's collection. There are the personal favorites, the ones that aren't highly acclaimed but still get played every once in a while. And then there are the albums that you stick in the back of your collection because you want to forget that you spent money on them. "Own It or Disown It" gives the writer the opportunity to look at such discarded albums and determine if they are diamonds in the rough or if they deserve to be used as mini-frisbees. [...]

In my younger years I used to get to shows too early and had to wait around for the opening band which was a good thing because I picked up some favorite bands in the process. Well, of late, I've been rather late to shows and end up missing most of the opening act. I apologize, as a music enthusiast I should know how to schedule my time better. That being said, I did miss all but the last 30 seconds of Hollis Brown 's set. I've never seen that band before so I would have at least liked [...]

Today's Christmas song comes from a band that recently was added to the Twilight saga soundtrack and it's the third time you see this name at our posts. Actually, Sleeping at Last is at the moment a one man project by Ryan O'Neal. Every year Sleeping at Last put out a new Christmas song, adding it to the previous ones released, and compiled them in a free Christmas Sampler available at NoiseTrade, or by any price you feel it's fair to pay for. Tweet vaso link Kicking around Twitter and Facebook most of the day lends itself to, in addition to seeing a bunch of nonsense, the occasional informative link. This week, from my following Born Gold (who is playing our 3rd Birthday show in March, if you haven't seen), I saw this article on Forbes of the Best Free Albums of 2011, which led me to The Dogs. Hailing from Chicago, The Dogs' album Camping was released for [...]

Now this is more like it. Had my qualms with Common's last leak, " The Believer ," really, just because I have such high expectations for him. But now I think it's just "Raw" is more of the flavor I love from Common and really has nothing to do with the actual quality in music. Whether or not I like "The Believer," I sure have faith in what Common's all about. Common - Raw [Audio clip: view full post to listen] [...]

Yeaaa, IanJ is stereotypical college boy rap. With lyrics that mean just about as much as a college actually educates you and a style that sounds so much like Mike Posner, I'm still wondering why I posted him. But where he has his setbacks, IanJ does have a few things going for him. "Hang Over From You" has one killer beat to strobe along to with lyrics that are pretty damn catchy (can't get the chorus out of my head). His voice is very Posneresque, but he's got at least one ball hanging [...]

As inspiring as the beat is, Common & John Legend's "The Believer" doesn't inspire much in my writing. It's a solid track with beautiful vocals and well pronounced rhymes, but that's nothing new for these two. Maybe it's just my mood, I'll listen to it later, but what do y'all think?
