Currently Listening To: LIFE

Currently Listening To: LIFE "See The Light" by LIFE, a four piece from London fronted by 20 year old Mike Sharp.  Their debut single 'See The Light' "twins the ominous and industrial percussive heart with twinkling electronic sounds which give way to distortion and rousing battle-choruses". The single has been taken from the forthcoming EP 'Elixir' which is released 10th June on Big Ship Records.

I Think We’ve Got A Problem

I Think We’ve Got A Problem "I Think We've Got A Problem" by Reversing Falls , from their self-titled debut album, out Tuesday, April 23.  The Montreal three-piece comprised of Tyler Crawford (vocals, guitar), Charlie Neufeld (lead rhythm guitar) and Jesse Ash (bass) partially recorded the record at Crawford’s own IRL Recording and at various churches and apartments throughout Montreal.  Co-producer Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, Timber Timbre) helped fill out their emotive songs about the futility of human relationships ( “Is This Thing On?” ) and hometown ennui ( “Curse This Place” ) while Howard Bilerman [...]

First Listen: The National “Demons”

First Listen: The National “Demons” Three years after a personal favourite 2010 album of mine “High Violet” was released, it’s no wonder the fanatical lovers of The National have been waiting with baited breath for the bands' new single “Demons”. Within seconds of listening it was as if I felt the entire world’s hunched shoulders release with outbursts of sighs and grateful “FINALLY’s!” The album artwork for their sixth studio offering Trouble Will Find Me is a visually striking stand alone piece that now becomes the catalyst for their new music video below. Ear-hugging melancholy, the lyrics stand as an honest [...]

Up next, we'll have a post from another new contributor, Lior Phillips from South Africa. Since the end of January, Lior and I have been trading links to new music.  Just about everything she sent me, I became a [...]

“New Summer” – new Young Galaxy Montreal electro-poppers Young Galaxy are preparing to release their fourth long-player, Ultramarine , out April 23 on Paper Bag Records. Their first peek at the record, "New Summer", is an ornate offering that is sure find its way to the beginning of several summer playlists. While definitely holding onto the lyrical romanticism of their past releases, this track is a delightfully breezy step in another direction.

New Contributors

New Contributors You might have seen my post way back in February , when I essentially posted a want ad for people interested in contributing to the site.  I got a great response from you and was able to start putting together a plan to incorporate more than one voice on Indie Music Filter.  I'm not done by no means, as I'm still trying to go through all the e-mails of people that showed interest.  I'm also opening the site up to a lot of colleagues I know in the music industry, bloggers I know that run amazing sites and music supervisors [...]

Great Night Out

Great Night Out If you follow this blog, you know I'm not one to do many live reviews.  The reality is that I go to a lot less shows than I used to and I've become pretty picky in which shows I choose to check out.  Last night though, I was able to catch two of my favourite bands in one place, Canada's Wintersleep opening for Scotlands' Frightened Rabbit at the Phoenix. I don't think I've ever seen such a perfect pairing of bands to perform together.  The show was fantastic.  Both bands ran through just about [...]

Pavilion

Pavilion Tim Sutton’s debut feature, likened to films by Gus Van Sant and Pedro Costa, follows a laconic teenager (Max) who moves from an idyllic lakeside town to his father’s home in arid suburban Arizona. With mesmerizing imagery of hot summer bike rides and cool lake-bound dives,  Pavilion  captures the ephemerality and reverie of youth and the fragility of adolescent friendships. A haunting score by the Sea and Cake ’s Sam Prekop shadows the storyline, echoing its secrets and shouldering its mysteries. PAVILION from v r on Vimeo . [...]

At Lightning Speed

At Lightning Speed All I got was an e-mail with the subject line "Music Submission" with  A T  L I G H T N I N G  S P E E D  in the body.  Check out this track from Fragments of Winter , self described as "Cinematic soundscapes and surreal melodies, defined by a melancholic, cold and almost despairing sound, while also mellow, full of hope, bright lights and loud noises. In one word: orchestronica." Pretty epic tune, for fans of M832s big moments.

New Music From Rogue Wave, “College”

New Music From Rogue Wave, “College” Rogue Wave are set to release their fifth studio album,  Nightingale Floors on June 4th via Vagrant, and our first listen is in the single "College".  The brainchild of Zach Schwartz (aka Zach Rogue), Rogue Wave  formed in 2002 in Oakland, CA.   While the line-up has changed from album to album, the two constants have always been Zach and drummer Pat Spurgeon. Nightingale Floors finds the group secure in its sound and brimming with confidence. The result can only be described as a triumphant return to form.

New Music From Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

New Music From Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. I had a feeling today would be a good day for music. Loving this new song from Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. called "If You Didn’t See Me (Then You Weren’t on the Dancefloor)".  The band had a ton of success in 20112s  It's A Corporate World,  and hope to follow that up with their sophomore LP.  In the meantime, they're keeping us interested with the four-track EP titled  Patterns,  featuring the song mentioned above and embedded below.   Patterns  EP is out digitally on April 16th, followed by a Record Store Day vinyl release on April 20th.
