BELGIAN band Tape Cuts Tape really are a cut above. The group's second album Black Mold, in particular the title track Black Mold, shows a group which is prepared to give a groove time to grow. The group have a basis in jazz improvisation and in rock - particularly with links to Deus. But due to their exploratory bent the trio's sound, although predominately a live instrument coupled with vocals approach, has more in common with the likes of electronic and trip hop acts like F Buttons or Portishead - opener Black Mold itself takes over 10 [...]
Thinking about festival locations or stages of musical performances one of the last things that come to mind is a church. In this respect one of the few exceptions is the Passionskirche in Berlin that was the venue of the second day of the DENOVALI SWINGFEST Berlin 2013. It was the first time this experimental The post Denovali Swingfest Berlin 2013 - A Look Back appeared first on Nothing But Hope And Passion - NBHAP - Music Magazine & more .

Listening to music should never be difficult. Making it on the other hand can prove to be impossible. And with a genre like free form, improvisational jazz, you're goal is to somehow transmit raw energy and emotion to a listener without words or a clear melody. Chemical Composition has attempted to capture their endeavor on Excitement Within The Trojan Horse and came close to accomplishing their goal. With improvisational jazz, I find the title of the track more as a guideline for what the artist envisioned for the piece than the dominating theme that [...]

When I was in college I went a couple times to a house where some slightly-older friends lived. Usually everyone in the house was in some sort of drug-induced haze, and, depending on who had ingested which substance, some configuration of residents and guests was almost always installed in the living room picking away at a variety of strange and poorly-tuned instruments. Few of the light bulbs worked so you always got the sense you were in a cabaret scene that got cut from Blade Runner or Eraserhead . Mystical Weapons' self-titled record could dubbed [...]

The second release of Wondermachine is by Rutti Savrola. There comes a time when you have to focus on your own taste and preference, and push that as far as you can. The product of an early Saturday morning jam that leaves you with an urge to get going, but no idea where to start - it is a certain form of madness, but with no outlet for it. A yearning for something indefinable. Credits Released by Wondermachine 20 December 2012 Music by [...]

Hey kids, I, as Wind Does , have just released my new drone, doom, lowercase, transcendental EP, Beyond Passion . Hear here: Beyond Passion by Wind Does

Jazz musicians rely heavily on their improvisational skills, bobbing and weaving through their routines primarily off the top of their head. Like jazz musicians, rappers too need to improvise, especially when they are practicing the art of "freestyling." In a recent study, brain scans revealed that these two forms of improvisation are linked closer than we could have ever imagined. The rapper study came shortly after findings were published from a jazz musicians experiment concluding that certain parts of the brain work when improvisation is triggered. The image above identifies parts of the brain pivotal in improvisation in yellow, while [...]
Internal Combustion by Tony Falco & Josh Sinton A series of free jazz odysseys on this new collection of tracks from percussionist Tony Falco and saxophonist Josh Sinton. While Falco and Sinton don't create the most relentless or chaotic improvisations, they do get quite noisy and freakish. Stream it via the widget above, or grab it for five bones on Bandcamp .

Back in 2011 S.Maharba released his tape, Up In Blood , on BTS Radio . The closing track, 'Ghost of Myself' is an improvised cut done live by the man. THE Touré-Raichel Collective's Tel Aviv Sessions came about from a chance encounter in an airport - but I suggest you don't leave it to chance whether or not you hear it. The music is the work of Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré and Isreali pianist Idan Raichel, exploring each other's sounds live in a studio - but this is less a culture clash than the sound of two complimentary approaches sidling up to each other. Obviously, as you would expect from two unique virtuoso talents coming together for almost the first time, there is no wild improvisation or [...]
In Olympic action we hope to see perfection. With jazz improvisation we want something beyond even that. The Olympics, particularly the two most popular sports from each season -- the gymnastics and figure skating -- sells itself, accurately, as an embodiment of competition and tension, complete with a touch of voyeurism. Moreover, these spectacles have proven to be immune to generation or fad, as they synthesize several of America's favorite obsessions: rivalry (friendly or not), physical prowess and especially the zero-sum proposition of win/lose. And then the added bonus that makes these...
Last weekend, we went over to the Why Rush Fest at Temple Works in Leeds to check out the vibes. It's an arts fest, and I usually hate stuff like that because wanky pretensious twats strutting around in immaculate threads, sipping wine and champagne is almost a given. Thank god this one wasn't anything like that at all. It's a 3 day fest but we only managed to come over on the second day, which was Saturday afternoon. I had a pounding hangover from clearing the dancefloor from a previous party the night before so wanted something chilled and different. [...]

Hate or love MTV, you can’t deny that their In My Room series is pretty dope. The special consists of a chosen artist or band that performs in a stripped-down, up close and personal setting. These performances are often special and one of a kind, showing a different side of the artist giving fans an in-depth view on what they’re all about. I was really impressed to see that they recently uploaded Nicolas Jaar ’s session from SxSW. Jaar has been a longtime favorite of mine, and a name that shouldn’t be unfamiliar [...]

It's not easy assembling an Anthony Braxton compilation shorter than 80 minutes - but it's free. Anthony Braxton, prodigal son of the AACM movement and MacArthur grant recipient, has just released his very first recorded opera, Trillium E, in the form of a four-disc box set. He seems to understand the financial, as well as mental, undertaking customers require when encountering works like this, so he has decided to release a free career sampler. Composition, Improvisation, Synthesis: Selections from the Tri-Centric Foundation Archives runs the gamut of his numerous instrumental works...
