With the weather warming up and summer just around the corner, could you think of a better way to get ready for such a great time than with a band named Is Tropical ? Yeah sure you can work out, eat healthy and save a bunch of money so you can actually go some place tropical and live it up all summer, but who has the time to do all that. It would be way more fun to just sit back, put on some headphones and kick back to this new album entitled I'm Leaving [...]

First off, I have to admit that I'm listening to this song through some pretty weak speakers. I'm not on my usual computer. With that said, this track still manages to boost plenty of energy out of this sorry excuse of a laptop. Luke Rathborne is preparing for the release of his latest album, and "Last Forgiven" is our first taste of the awesomeness that we can expect to hear. This is a quirky, upbeat jam that will definitely stick with you for the rest of the day. Think late '70s new wave, and that is exactly the fun, edgy [...]

Does something like a satisfying gloom really exists? A certain sense of relief within the deepest depression? It's a fascinating idea that is worth to be thinked about a bit longer. Especially in the context of a band like THE NATIONAL and a character like frontman Matt Berninger. The Postelles: ...And It Shook Me - When the New York four-piece The Postelles released their first album in 2011, they didn’t need to be original. Produced by Albert Hammond, Jr., and already set in line with a handful of semi-prolific New York indie rock bands, they could have easily settled into a point of complacency surrounded by the same rhythm-driven sounds and slightly shadowy lyrics that defined the scene around them. Indeed, for their premier album, they did just that, making a name for themselves based upon the names to which they were already being compared. [...]
A pleasant enough release which will no doubt be well-received by their fans, but it doesn’t go anywhere exciting. By Darren Saunders

The Brooklyn-based band's sixth effort is another dazzling triumph, one that clearly places them - if they weren't already - as one of the most important bands currently making music.

Until recently I didn't consider myself a fan of pop music. In fact, I'd once believed that pop music was the antithesis of everything I liked about music. In high school I'd have described myself as a fan of "alternative music" which meant I was obsessed with Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Bjork, and Radiohead's The Bends and OK Computer (after all, I am a child of the nineties.). Then in college I thought of myself as a fan of "indie music" which meant I was now obsessed with Modest Mouse, Grandaddy, Spoon, and Radiohead's Kid A and [...]

Sparrow & The Workshop | Murderopolis Words by Lee Adcock Never assume, dear readers, that “ folk music ” always entails gentle, quiet acoustic ballads. Sparrow and the Workshop , folk deviants from Glasgow, are about to unleash their first release Murderopolis for Edinburgh-based Song, By Toad Records (their third in general), and it’s a mighty force. No subtle melodies or wide-eyed freak-outs here – this LP blazes forth with the raw, snarling guitars, brooding bass lines, and galloping [...]

Harper Simon’s new LP is called ‘Division Street’ and for a minute I thought I’d spotted the primary influence in it’s naming. With receding braincells but a sprightly search engine technique I was soon to discover that Elliott Smith’s song was actually called ‘Division Day’, wherein the whole trust of this piece lost its mojo. Doesn’t take anything away from this number however, from an artist who has somehow escaped the eternal comparison to his famous father’s work. Perhaps this is because he has struck out on his own and each time alchemy has more or less ensued. ‘Bonnie Brae’ [...]

However due to a leak, it was released a month earlier than expected. You can pick up the album in various packages from the Topshelf Records website , and get it digitally on their Bandcamp page . The band "speak to a universal experience: of home, of suburbia, of community, of nostalgia for a time not so long [...]

Exploding in Sound Records have introduced to me to a couple of my new favorite bands this year in Geronimo! and Fat History Month , but Newtown, Connecticut trio Ovlov might be their best introduction yet. Made of three brothers-- Steve, Theo, and Jon Hartlett-- Ovlov boasts a 90s throwback sound with dynamic riffs and subtle yet sweltering pop melodies that float nicely atop a murky layer of shoegaze distortion. Blue Baby , the first single from their forthcoming debut album am [...]

Soon after getting my first dose of Fat History Month , I discovered Krill- - a noisy, off the wall alternative rock band in the same Boston basement scene as FHM and Speedy Ortiz. Their latest single, Never A Joke , off their forthcoming LP Lucky Leaves features the same vacillating vibe featured on last year's home recorded Alam No Hris , but more polished and free of basement debris. Jonah Furman’s wavering vocals instantly pulled me in and are the biggest reason for me playing this song over and over for the past [...]
