Tweet For a time we took a shining to Princeton, in fact so enamoured were we that one of their tracks was included on an Indiecater compilation of ours. It was only on further inspection, after a quick romance involving 'Pehr', that it emerged that Matt and Jesse Kivel from the band have diverted to Sleeping Bags along with 2 other buddies. Bit of a remove from the day job if 'Pehr' is anything to go by. A shift from sucrose indie [...]
Pink Magick by GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES! An intense show of instrumental power on the new GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES! album, Pink Magick . From what I understand, it's the Northampton band's third full-length album. If you're into intricate drums with driving beats and colorful layers of math rock guitar leads, then stream the entire release above. It's downloadable on Bandcamp for five bones as well.
Earth Division highlights a more subdued side of Mogwai, with three quietly plaintive piano- and string-infused tracks, plus the fuzz-drenched haze of "Drunk and Crazy." Links; Mogwai - Earth Division (EP) Password (if needed); wws Mogwai Mogwai @ MySpace BUY!!! from Subpop

Whether you're a dancer looking for your next piece of music to perform to, a rapper looking for a raw beat to rhyme to, or a jam band who wants to show off their talent, instruments are the true essence of a song. They are the backbone to what makes a person want to shake their thing and dance. They inspire a person to sing and add poetry to a beat. They are the reason why someone decides they want to take up piano or guitar lessons, so that one day they could be as good as what they hear being [...]
This Will Destroy You's latest LP starts and finishes with flying colors, but it gets a little underwhelming in the middle for me. Hearing the band revisit old sounds, work with an odd drum mix, and working with similar structures throughout this album make me rethink my original love for some of the tracks here. In terms of structure, I'm really not wowed by this album. Where I am incredibly impressed is with the textures here! The sounds are fantastic, and some of the best I've heard this year. They're kind [...]

[Photos courtesy of Nikki Nicole. See her Flickr stream [ HERE ] It's no longer news when an "indie" band sells out a mega-sized venue. But the story of Explosions In the Sky - an instrumental rock band on the tiny (and uniformly outstanding) label Temporary Residence Limited - has got to be one of the strangest of all. Sure, EITS are an absolutely killer live band, and their music is incredible - but that could also be said of their brethren in the instrumental rock scene, the next-most-popular of whom [...]
JOHNNY FLYNN(Folk)British folk artist Johnny Flynn really caught my ear with this one, and it's yet another notable example of Brits doing folk extremely well (the other being Mumford and Sons...). With a light feel, some nice guitar work, and a catchy horn riff or two this song will grab you too. "Kentucky Pill" comes at ya off of his latest album, Been Listening, which was out in June of last

Nowadays, I feel like it's easy to label any instrumental band as "post-rock." That's certainly happened in the case of Kentucky's Parlour, but I guess there are worse things to be called. However, if the shoe does in fact fit, Parlour's take on post-rock is well-aged, working with riffs and experimental song structures similar to Slint or Fridge. Parlour has existed in one form or another since the 80s, and they haven't released anything formally since a 2005 EP on Temporary Residence Limited . Their latest album is [...]

[iPhone photo by acidjack. Conditions were very dark and flash was not an option. Photo is not great; recording is] Brothers Jared and Michael Bell of Lymbyc Systym have had the advantage of making music together since they were preteens, sure, but still, the synergy and skill they brought to this DIY show at Studio BPM was startling. Their sound, a blend of electronic music, jazz and experimental rock, evinces such diverse acts as Tortoise and Explosions in the Sky. What is remarkable about the brothers Bell, though, is that they sound like a [...]
I'm trying to learn to stop apologizing for the time in between these web radio shows. The truth is, when it comes to scisosrkick, I've been preaching quality over quantity for nearly a decade. And the fact remains, the longer I've taken between Scissorkasts, the more likely I have more fantastic music to choose from. [...]
Fantastic presentation of art and rock. DVD - Entertainment - Shopping - Recordings - Video
Jeff sent this EP over and said he was "90% sure" I'd be into it. Fuck, I must be hard to please or something because this is so squarely in my wheel house I can't imagine why he thought 10% of me wouldn't be feeling this. American Men are a group of Scotsmen doing instrumental, [...]

I'm at a loss for words. The mythical Godspeed You! Black Emperor has returned . Save a Pink Floyd reunion, Radiohead playing in my backyard, or Damon Albarn serenading me with "Out of Time" as he simultaneously metamorphoses into 2D, this is literally the best news I've ever heard. Some how, some way, I will see this band live. My left nut is officially up for grabs for anyone who gets tickets to a GY!BE gig and is willing to trade. Right is negotiable, too. Godspeed You! Black Emperor: Tiny Silver Hammers (Part [...]

Pushkin - Casual Dismount Headed to Ten Years of ATP in December? Then you're likely to enjoy the sounds of Pushkin, a five-piece from the backwoods of Wicklow, Ireland, whose fiddly instrumental jams are about synchronising seamlessly into the one groove. None of that tired build-up-to-a-crescendo-and-br eak nonsense, this is pin-point accurate post-rock that never tires. For the time being, their five-song EP is only available at shows but a release on the awesome Richter Collective label is on the horizon. MySpace Photo by [...]
