Jack Penate has a weird obsession with death. His debut album closer 'When We Die' and second album 'Everything is New' closers 'Let's All Die' and 'Body Down' are perfect examples of this. They mix his wordsmithing with serene vocal lines whilst maintaining a definitive sound that could only come from this man's voice. So when a new song of Penate's appears online, it's no surprise that there's a somber undertone. There's a really stripped down feel to 'No One Lied' that suggests a slight return to old form, and through taking notes from 'When We Die', [...]
Last week on Christmas Eve, 2010 Mercury Prize-winning band the the xx posted online a teaser from their upcoming second album. Despite the name 'Open Eyes', there's nothing particularly 'open' about this demo. Being a demo, it should be expected that anything muddled sounding will be cleared up by the time the second album gets its final shine. There's the sound of something being dropped at 1.29. Jamie Smith's role as beatmaster is nonexistent, as is Oliver Sim's bass. All you hear is Romy Madley-Croft's voice and a few [...]

We're already collecting band names for the 10 for 2012 poll. ( Vote here. ) But in case you weren't sure we were getting closer to the end of 2011, here's something else: news of She and Him 's 'A Very She and Him Christmas' album. If you have ever seen the film 'Elf', you will recall Zooey Deschanel's beautiful a capella version of 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' that bounces off the bathroom tiles. Thankfully, the song is one of the 12 tracks on the third album from Deschanel and her [...]
General Fiasco will be releasing a new EP, 'Waves', in mid-November. The title track is a fun, loud guitar-fueled little number, just like 'Rebel Get By' and 'Ever So Shy' before it. It starts with a great thudding bassline behind Owen Starthern's winsome vocals. It struck me in this song for the first time in a General Fiasco that they don't sound like Irish at all on record. Hopefully this will help them find success outside the UK. But first things first: the band is playing a series of dates in Britain [...]
Editor's note: Your watch is correct. No, it's not noon yet. Normally we only post MP3s of the Day features at 10 in the morning and longer reviews later in the day. But because we have so much new stuff to post today, we're switching things up. The Twilight Sad are getting ready to release their third album, called 'No One Can Ever Know' in early 2012. Judging from the new song Fat Cat has offered up as a taster to the new release, 'Kill It in [...]
Fanfarlo appeared to be one of those bands destined for the 'where are they now?' pile. Until last week, that is. Releasing new press photos (and imploring the blogosphere "Please stop using embarrassing old pictures of us with 6 members." on their Facebook page ), they've also released a new song to the wild, called 'Replicate'. It's the first part of a three-part puzzle according to the band's official Web site ; this video piece was filmed by Alex Southam. It's good of a time as any to reappear, as [...]
Florence Welch, the centre of Florence and the Machine , has been in hiding for some time; all that was known was that she had gone into writing/recording-hiding with Paul Epworth (the same producer that she worked with for her popular debut 'Lungs') and little else. This week she debuted a taster to her forthcoming sophomore album in the form of the track 'What the Water Gave Me'. Less is definitely more in this first glimpse into her still untitled second LP. Interspersed with 'aesthetic' shots of Florence with her ginger [...]
Kai Fish is best known as bassist for Mystery Jets , a band near and dear to my heart. But you're probably not aware that Fish has written for Mark Ronson and the Count and Sinden (I certainly wasn't). So based on this, I guess it should not be too much of a surprise that he has decided to use his considerable talents to write and record a solo album. 'Life in Monochrome' is scheduled to drop on the 26th of September on Music of Wolves, and to get people ready [...]
'Act on Impulse' is the recently released taster for the forthcoming We Were Promised Jetpacks album 'In the Pit of the Stomach', to be released on Fat Cat on the 3rd of October. The very definition of a slow builder, this majestic track features a no less than 2o-minute intro, with simple plucked guitar and kick drum developing into a complex groove of hypnotic future echoes. Suddenly, the edifice vanishes, and the song is afoot. With an opening couplet of "He died alone / he died on impact", this is [...]
As briefly alluded to in this MP3 of the Day post 2 weeks ago, Manchester DJ / production duo Heavyfeet will be working on a special remix project during the entire month of July. At the time, we here at TGTF didn't know which Manchester-based bands were participating in the project. But now we can announce them: The Whip (whose album sampler I just reviewed ) I Am a Camera [...]

I recall my first "run-in" with Bjork vividly, back in the mid-'90s. My brother, who had just purchased his first car (or should I say massive four-by-four), wanted to show it off and take little sister for a spin. After what felt like climbing a small mountain, I finally situated myself and he pulled out onto the road. "You gotta listen to this!" he said excitedly, popping a homemade CD into a then-fancy, car-specific CD player, cranking up the volume. (Yes kids, there once was a time when most cars were only outfitted with cassette tape [...]

Three years it's been since their debut album, 'X Marks Destination', was released. But the Whip , originally from the outskirts of Manchester (Oldham to be exact), have announced they're going to release their sophomore long player, 'Wired Together', in mid-September. This is good news for electro / dance / rock loving kids like myself, those who didn't really completely connect with Metronomy's 'The English Riviera' , for example. Three months of the new album dropping in your local music shop, the band are offering up a stream of five of the [...]
Last year, thanks to Philadelphia Grand Jury and the Paper Scissors , I was convinced Australia was yet another untapped, rich musical resource that was just waiting to be discovered. (And I'm not just talking about the Temper Trap 's quick rise to fame when I say this.) Sounds Like Brisbane is a collective of labels from that Western town in Australia that have chosen to band together for marketing and promotional efforts, with the main goal of getting music out to the masses. Just like with [...]
So Manchester indie rock/dance band Delphic have been in hiding somewhere in the Cheshire countryside since last autumn, working on new tunes for public consumption. They've teased fans since early February with a new, pared down Web site with beautiful photos and bits and pieces of songs (and inexplicably, a chicken head coming out from behind a tree) that may or may not show up in future musical efforts (see their YouTube channel or their official Web site for more on these). But today is the first 'track' [...]
We've been given an exclusive to post a brand new I Dream in Colour song, 'Finding the Courage'. Rather than hear me prattle on how good this song makes me feel when I hear it, I will let frontman Richard Judge tell you more about it... - 'Finding The Courage' was written in Serbia following one of the best nights of my life at Exit Festival, clouded only by the punch in the nose I got from a Serbian the size of a tank. If you're reading this: fear [...]

Fresh from winning the Godlike Genius Award at the NME Awards last night, the Foo Fighters are gearing up for the release of their seventh studio album, 'Wasting Light'. Scheduled for release on 12 April, this LP is looking to establish its rightful place in one of the world's biggest rock band's back catalogue. Recorded entirely in Dave Grohl's garage on analogue equipment, this 11-track album goes back to the roots of the Foo Fighters. 'Rope' will be the LP's first single, slated for release on the 1st of March. It starts [...]
Words by Braden Fletcher Young the Giant seem like every other band. They've got the traditional five-piece line-up, a fairly standard 'look' and haven't really done much you would have heard about. Another for the indie-rock landfill you might think. Not at all! This Californian group may seem like every other band, that is, until you press play on their eponymous debut album. The music just exudes positive energy from start to finish. They sound like their homeland in Orange County got struck by rock 'n' roll. [...]
This autumn, few albums are as highly anticipated as American rockers Kings of Leon 's 5th effort 'Come Around Sundown,' which will be released on 18th October 2010. They've just released the first single, 'Radioactive,' which they started writing in-between 'Aha Shake Heartbreak' and 'Because of the Times,' and was the first track they started to play around with when they began to work on the new record. This lengthy writing process really shows in the song: in it, the Followill clan goes back to their roots while simultaneously taking the band's [...]

Dutch Uncles (or 'Duncles' as fellow Mancunian and proud band supporter Mike Joyce likes to call them) have a unique, intriguing sound. They're unlike anything I've heard over here in America lately. Really, go over to their MySpace and check them out, because me trying to explain their sound to you is as unlikely to be successful as Gok Wan trying to describe the more esoteric wrinkles of footy. Maths pop? I think that oversimplifies things. You see, Dutch Uncles are a band that prides themselves on being different. And [...]

We get a lot of music submissions. When I popped over to City Reign 's MySpace to have a listen, the first thing that struck me the first thing that struck me about the page was the great affection the band must have for their instruments, because next to each member's name and photo is a description of what they each play. (Since starting up with bass guitar a couple weeks ago, I have become increasingly geeky about axes.) As they say, the proof is in the pudding, and after I pressed [...]
