The solo project of Austrian native Philipp Szalay, Farewell Dear Ghost has been bubbling away under the surface for little under two years, perfecting his art and readying the release of his debut single Cool Blood , and it doesn't disappoint. Having played a smattering of live shows as a three piece (featuring Günther Paulitsch and Lukas Schneeberger), this single will surely open them up to a far wider audience. An epic, brooding affair, that's as bold and dynamic as it is intimate; it's a love song at heart and a wonderfully over the top introduction to Farewell Dear [...]

Oftentimes, the idea behind releasing a 7” is to give the listener a taste of what to expect from the forthcoming album. However, these two A-sides from moody indie duo Frank’s Daughter paint two very distinct pictures of the band’s gloomy, yet buoyant sound. This isn’t exactly their debut – earlier this year, Frank and Arthur dropped their first single, “Fall Fully Backwards”, on 6Music and Xfm, an atmospheric wonder with a pulsing, brooding bass line. (If you missed that, by the way, it IS available on Spotify.) While the morose nature underlying that track remains central to [...]
Frameworks is one man production outfit from Manchester who makes smooth groovy chilled out tracks which ooze cool. With a sound thats reminiscent of Belleruche (now there's a blast from the past). RnB inspired beats combine with jazz trumpets and beautifully sassy female vocals. His first EP 'Vanish' is avaliable for free over at Bandcamp and his new EP 'Old Friend' is due for release June 3rd. Related Posts Belleruche Introducing ... Bloum [...]
Liverpool based producer Ben Thomas, aka L'Étranger, made an encouraging start to his career with the first of his French flavour releases on London based label, La Bombe. Along with his debut EP ‘1997’ hitting the top spot on Beatport, a raft of remixes and compilation appearances, he's had a bumper 12 months. But instead of resting on his laurels, Mr Thomas is not only in the throes of releasing his new EP ‘Don’t Ever Change’, he's also kick started his own label, 'Thomorrow Records', which will form an outlet for the many B-sides and collaborations he creates [...]

This was going to be a Track Of The Day (man, I love those) until I totally couldn't pick a 'track' so instead I take great pleasure in 'introducing' you to Burnt Palms . They're from California, and you can tell. Which is a good thing. The melodies are sunny and you can almost feel scorching sand bouncing off the bass drum...and again, that's a good thing, even if you hate sand (and I fucking do). Despite their tendency towards the down-tuned and dynamically simple, [...]
It's the legend, the myth behind much of Donna Summer's huge disco success. Giorgio Moroder did most of his work in Munich and the influence of Düsseldorf’s Kraftwerk can be heard in his work for Donna Summer , which includes two of the ultimate disco anthems, I Feel Love and Love To Love You Baby . This was motorik music: spacious, trippy, ever-lasting, far removed from the relentless bounce of most disco. Giorgio Moroder is also a supreme composer of soundtracks, scoring an unlikely success with The Chase , the theme from Midnight Express , and his footprints are [...]

The sound of a band that's a collaboration between members from Belgium, Cameroon, China, and France might leave the listener scratching their head a bit, but thankfully it's as easy as hitting play on any FI/SHE/S song. The five guys in the band met in a Parisian suburb in their early twenties, and with little money and big dreams joined forces and started to work on their music, which has frequently been labeled as dream pop. After trying the names Kinda Weird Fishes and FI.SHE.S, it seems they've settled on FI/SHE/S. With this latest moniker [...]

Swords have been slowly building a wave on enthusiasm as one of those new breed of acts from Ireland that are casting off the restraints of strumming and boybands and really finding their own sound. Whether it's Diane Anglim's rich vocals mesmerising you on Special, or the pop licks and foot-tapping groove of All The Boys, Swords are marking themselves out as a pop band to keep an eye on. I can't decide who Peer Support remind me of. I've been listening to the pair of songs they shared with me from their upcoming EP all night, racking my brain trying to put my finger on their sound. A swift current of shimmering guitars and marching drums carries "Late Spring" into an early summer anthem anthem, while "Nonchalant" powers along on a Galaxie 500-like riff. There's is a distinctly 90s vintage guitar drone, one that leaves my palette wanting more. Hopefully the Calgary five-piece won't be leaving fans waiting long, as all [...]

There's a new band on the block. Producing some sweet post-folky-rock numbers with a hell a lot of substance, style and elegance right from the other side of the pond. Influenced by the likes of Austra, Nick Drake and Cat Power, New York-based Wilsen blend contemporary folk songs with ethereal, electric arrangements to create a full intricate sound tagged "dream folk". Wilsen self-released their debut mini-album 'Sirens' in the summer of 2012. Their debut single 'Anahita' was released in February 2013. New single 'Dusk' is released on the 10th June 2013. It comes backed by a cover of [...]

Ok, on the basis that 2013 has already been a shriek-worthily good year for new music, you may think you have no room for Yet Another Potentially Favourite Popstar in your life but – and we mean this in the politest of ways – think again, for you may have inadvertently overlooked Tove Lo . Harnessing the heritage of umpteen Swedish musical geniuses before her and adding an extra edgy twist of her own, Lo magics up pop that gets sufficiently naughty to hook you in but [...]
Originally the solo project of Jesse Cafiero, Split Screens added drummer Rory O'Connor ( Tycho, Com Truise ) and vibraphonist Geneva Harrison ( Rachel Goodrich, DRMS ) to record their debut, self-titled EP, which came out in December of last year. The band have recently made the step-up to performing live shows and have also released a beautiful new video that you can check out below. Crafted together using old footage from a San Franciscan film archive, the video is a perfect accompaniment to a track that is both vibrant and touching. Layers of soft instrumentation [...]

Barely out of their teens, but blessed with a talent that belies their tender years, Wild Swim have – somewhat incredibly – already notched up almost a decade of experience as a band. Richard Sansom (vocals), Carlos Posada (guitar and keyboard), Jacob Lively (bass) and Sam Robinson (drums) have been playing together since they formed at school in Oxford, with Jamie Jay (also guitar and keyboard) joining two years later. “Our first ever gig was at a school concert when we were 11 or 12,” recalls Posada. “That was when Richard was asked [...]

Every now and then someone will send me a song to review that they claim has “potential” but it rarely ever does. Personally I usually try and avoid the word “ potential ” as it almost always comes across patronising and in an environment where we are currently saturated with ‘new’ music it’s often difficult separating the consistently good from the otherwise average. Which is why I surprised myself when the only words I could conjure up to describe emerging Australian duo Machines for Dreams all revolved around the notion of potential. There is actually little [...]

Summer is totally taking it's time to show up this year. It's a bummer. People feel blue, people feel down. None the less, we're here to bring smiles on your faces. New amazing debut track from American duo Puddel . 'Downtown' blends ambient soundscapes with hip hop inspired beats which ripple, bubble and pulsate with glitchy electro fragments, all framed by a haunting wailing vocal, which is interrupted by an almost choral chorus. Taking influences from Purity Ring, and James Blake, the track is available to stream and download for free now. Puddel - Downtown (Bandcamp Download) Related Posts Introducing ... Fans of Best Coast should take note of Books of Love . The L.A. duo - comprised of Katy Goodman (Vivian Girls, La Sera) and Greta Morgan (The Hush Sound) - turns up the doo-wop on Bethany Cosentino's summery lo-fi surf rock. Their debut track, "Space Time," spins a tale of unrequited, interstellar love. It comes with a cute homemade video, which you can watch above. STREAM: Books of Love - "Space Time"

Germans is a sugary sweet moody disco collaboration between songwriter Julia Kwamya and producer Kurt Feldman (of Ice Choir fame). The Brooklynites’ debut track “Cruel” is a glistening throwback to the ultra smooth, pure synthetic pop of Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and Donna Summers. Its bittersweet folk ballad undertones and glitsy modern production introduce some unusual elements into the mix, giving the track a unique and haunting feel. Kurt and Julia first bonded over their mutual affinity for a dinky MIDI keyboard called the Miracle Piano Teaching System, first marketed as an add-on to the original [...]
