My internet shat itself yesterday, and didn't come back up until this afternoon - here's what should've appeared yesterday... What better way to kick off your Friday than with a selection of the best tracks from the It All Started archives? If I'm honest though, this is really just an excuse for me to repost all those tracks that I love and that you may have missed the first time round. Today's edition is all about the coverage... enjoy! Always On My Mind (Willie Nelson Cover) - Iron & Wine with Calexico [...]

Ok so recently, I've just been searching around for some new stuff, and decided to go down paths I'd usually ignore, and I came up with quite a playlist. It might be short with only five tunes, but it's sweet . I won't just go on telling you cool facts about the artists, because these mashups are either home-made or by DJ's I can't recall. So just enjoy these creative takes on classic, underground, popular and gangsta tunes. (p.s. you gotta admit my collages are cool hahaha) MASHUPS : [...]

So. Despite my general disdain for television, I kinda might have sorta gotten addicted to Friday Night Lights. It happens, on occasion, when an exceptionally good show crosses my path, and even moreso when it has an ace soundtrack. At the urging of several friends with really good musical taste, I began gorging myself on the first three seasons on DVD right around Thanksgiving and I'm just catching up. The best I can explain, in its finest moments, this show feels like a Springsteen song in small towns and the fires of youth, all come to life in [...]
Wow! I went on a bit of a bogging spree today. What can I say, when one is stuck in a cubicle doing mundane work for 8hrs a day, working for THE MAN...he has to keep himself sane. And my way of doing so is by blurbing a few sentences at a time about the music that I love. And the rest of the week looks pretty grim as far as killing time goes, so I thought I better get the music sharing out of my system tonight. I just took my beloved Boston terrier on [...]

Welcome back, readers! I've been meaning to do the inevitable Rolling Stones -esque post for a while now and my reasons were threefold: 1) They're only one of the best fucking bands on the planet (still) .. 2) The Rolling Stones are about as relevant to me now as a child growing up on classic rock .. and 3) It is safe to say that "Wild Horses" is the earliest song I can remember absolutely falling in love with the instant I heard it. It is quite possibly one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and [...]

This week's episode of the Contrast Podcast asks us to talk about our favourite live versions . I had a few that I thought about contributing, but in the end I went for the divine cover of 'Always On My Mind' by Iron & Wine and Calexico. I have posted this before, and I'm not going to say anything about it that I haven't already said. It's gorgeous and that yearning pedal steel and that twang gets me every time . Always On My Mind (Live Cover) - Iron & Wine with Calexico [...]

On Monday afternoon, I called the bowling alley at Moe's BBQ , next door to the Gothic Theatre, to reserve a lane before the concert. "Big show tonight?" the man (sadly not named Moe) asked me. "Yeah, Calexico is playing next door," I replied. Bowling Man was unfamiliar with their music and asked me to describe it. "Well ... there's a southwestern element in there, but it's not country. There are mariachi horns and steel guitar -- I guess it's indie-minded with kinda a wild desert streak." That's the best I [...]

Insound is partnering with Fuel/Friends to offer a sweet limited-edition Calexico poster designed by the fearsome Jason Munn of Small Stakes in San Francisco. If you are a fan of the burnished southwestern wilderness in Calexico's music, moustaches, or excellent poster design, this is the contest for you. Enter to win here , and the lucky reader will be announced next Tuesday. There's a whole series of posters and hoodies Munn's designed for artists like The Hold Steady , The National , [...]

One of my favorite weekends of the year is finally upon us. I look forward to and dread this weekend all at once anymore. It is one of those events I used to go into so blindly, so carelessly, that anything could and likely would happen. I've endured sun poisoning, alcohol poisoning, torrential rains, toliets overflowing with feces, stealing kegs and shoes and anything else left lying around, friends passing out in port-o-pots - only to be found hours later - boobs I wanted to see and boobs I didn't. Every year is different, every year [...]
Each month, I make a playlist consisting of an artist of every letter of the alphabet. This is April 2008: 1. The Suggestion Box - Aqueduct - I Sold Gold - Pop Download It Here 2. Don't Let Me Down - The Beatles - Past Masters Two - Pop/Rock Download It Here 3. When You're Gone - The Cranberries - Single - Alternative Download It Here 4. Serotonin - D Folmer - SXSW 2008 Showcasing Artists - Pop [...]

So one of my favorite things ever is when a great artist redoes a classic, and it is simply spectacular. The Rolling Stones have had a plethora of spectacular songs, and one of my fav's has got to be Wild Horses. I guess I like surprising chillness that the song can bring, and I am in a sort of late night mood. Today we have several covers, first of which is by Sheryl Crow. Sheryl decided to go acoustic with just a piano and her beautiful voice. I love the intensity she puts into it. Very nice. Another [...]

Calling all boys and girls, and boys and boys, and girls and girls...Valentine's Day is this Thursday, and you'd better start planning something special for the one you love if you haven't already. Your sweetie deserves some kind of recognition for putting up with your shit. In case you want to include a mix of love songs in the goodies, here are a few to start with, including one of Ryan Adams' most touching and beautiful since "When The Stars Go Blue." I'll have some older love songs on this Tuesday's Time Travel post. [...]
Vampire Weekend . I said it, thus my obligation to mention them on my indie blog is complete and this blog won’t be shut down. (That is sufficient, indie music blog gods, right?) Joking aside, the album is very fun but I didn’t think anyone needed me to hit them over the head with it anymore. Radar Bros. – Pomona [...]
From time to time I work extra late by going to the jail at the end of my work day. Tonight was my first time to go late night to the Inverness jail in Portland. It was packed with visitors. All sorts of different people, there to see their loved ones. I was on the attorney waiting bench and watched them go into the visitng rooms in heats of 20 or so. Some of them were leading the others along because they had gone through the searches and buzzing doors lots of times to see their [...]

It's a sappy one, but a classic. Written by Johnny Christopher, Mark James and Wayne Carson Thompson, and originally recorded and released by Brenda Lee in 1972, Always On My Mind has really been made famous by Willie Nelson, the Pet Shop Boys and Elvis Presley. Willie's version hit number one on the Billboard chart, Pet Shop Boys snuck it into the Top 10 for a short time and Elvis reached number 16 with it on the Hot Country Singles Chart in 1973. The year previous, Brenda Lee could [...]
Part 6 of our 7 part series... The Graveyard (shows I deleted from my season passes, since I don’t watch anything on Saturdays) CSI: Miami (CBS) – If you think “House” is too repetitive, don’t watch more than one episode of this show. I don’t think anyone who’s seen the clip below can possibly watch David Caruso do anything without laughing out loud. [...]
