Photography by Renee King What? Wonderful indie-pop from Canada that I've never heard of? What? Been cranking out albums since '07? How the hell is that even possible??? Seriously? It's amazing what gets under the radar, isn't it? There are just so so so many bands. You know, if we had as many bands available to us as we did back in the 80s/90s, we'd have a need for maybe 2, 3 blogs tops. Though, I think music blogs are [...]
Filed under "nostalgic summer songs", today's track is Said the Whale's Emerald Lake, AB from their 2009 sophomore full-length effort Islands Disappear. In it, we get a full sampling of what the Vancouver-based indie-rock act brings to the table, from their abilities as lyricists (see: "And I think you'll agree that? the train tracks are [...]

Twitter users are likely aware that today is of course Music Monday. My contribution for the week is coming from the Vancouver-based indie-rock band Said the Whale . Curse of the Currents is found on the band's 2008 album Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia ; the album is actually a re-release of the band's 2007 debut album "Taking Abalonia" with the addition of 7 new "Howe Sounds" songs. The band is currently riding a huge wave of momentum they've built up over the last year, with the release of their "The Magician" EP on July 1st and their latest [...]
Vancouver's Said The Whale have recently released their new record, Islands Disappear , and it has been a fantastic record to delve into for someone (like me) who has spent the last four years away from the Terminal City. Much like their previous work , Islands Disappear is rooted in the geography of Canada and, in particular, Vancouver. While I wasn't home for the massive storm that tore apart Stanley Park, it's nice to have a human response (as opposed to the internet headlines I had at the time) to the event [...]

Today I bore witness to the true value of Twitter, when I saw a link for this song in one of Said the Whale 's twoots. The song is a mashup that features Gentleman from Said the Whale, Time to Pretend from MGMT , Lovely Alien from Holy Fuck , Baba O'Riley from The Who , and vocals over top from the Canadian hip-hop artist Shad ; needless to say, it all comes together in spectacular fashion, like really spectacular fashion. The release/leak of this song coincides nicely [...]

Another tune tonight from the Vancouver-based indie-rock band Said the Whale . The Magician (Camilo) is the opening track off the band's most recent EP The Magician , released in May of this year; The song is also expected to be included on the band's sophomore full-length effort Islands Disappear . According to the band's website , mixing of the new album will begin on August 17 with an expected release date of October 13. On an interesting side-note, Islands Disappear is being produced by Howard Redekopp, who was behind previous Tegan [...]
