I don't normally post other peoples journalism because..... this is our blog of our thoughts? Anywhoo, I read this today on Waffles.fm and it just struck me as possibly the best review of 1990s that is the most relevant, honest and truthful and what makes it appeal to me is how succinct it is because I can't write that way. So I give you, a review of Kicks/the band. I did one too, I think it was like 2pgs, this is like 9 sentences. I think I've written more in explaining it than the review is itself. It's almost comical [...]
Guys, I haven't written an album review in forever, so forgive me if it sucks but take it in stride, okay, please and thank you. And buy this album whenever it comes out. Jackie needs to eat and Dino Bardot needs more pink stretch skinny jeans. Jackie McKeown is a walking, talking enigma. Is his name John or Jackie? How old is he? Are his teeth real? These are all questions that probably will never be answered, trust me I've tried. He's somewhat of a cult icon from his time in the Yummy Fur with members [...]
From myspace, entitled "Fun in Edinburgh" Spent the best part of yesterday in Glasagow's rival city of Edinburgh. We were filming a video for our song '59', an endearing shimmy from the mind and heart of drummer-buoy Michael. This time we've returned to the bosom of Abby and Lewis who masterminded our 'You Made Me Like it' video, y'know, the one with the gymnasts. This time they've attempted to film us strutting around a studio then they'll miniaturise us and place us into this lovely wee toy house and garden. It's not a CGI disaster though. [...]
After we've seen the downward spirals of the Kaiser Chiefs, The Fratellis, The Pigeon Detectives - all fun bands who fell by the wayside when they became SRS BZNZ about their music, who can we look towards to keep it real? 1990s, of course! I recently posted about their new album called KICKS and how I just knew it would be totally fucking amazing because it's 1990s? Well, I just got a listen to a song off it called "the Box" which, I guess, is going to be a single or something. My first reaction to it was "oic y [...]
1990s will release their sophomore album March 23, which, let me say, can't come soon enough. The album has been finished for quite some time and I say that as it is mid-January, but they have to sit on it for 2 more months....... 'Kicks' was recorded at Edwyn Collins' West Heath Yard studio in London and was produced by Bernard Butler, the former Suede guitarist who once worked with the Libertines. Songs set to feature include 'Kickstrasse', which is about the German 1970s terrorist group Baader-Meinhof and features vocals from Kate Jackson. 'Everybody [...]
Friends, We're in the studio as I type. Been recording all week in Moloko, Hoxton Square. Doing three new tracks with Bernard Butler. A very joyful session it's been too. KICKSTRASSE is kinda glam-tastic in it's current state. The guitars on this are constantly described as "menacing" (usually by the easily menaced). Today we got Miss Jackson auf dem Long Blondes into the studio to add some extra glamour to an already glamour-soaked track. She managed to reach up into the heavens for those notes only Tina Turner and Russell Mael know about. Thanks a-plenty, Kate. [...]
Singer Jackie McKeown also posted a blog on the site saying the Scottish band were on the verge of completing their new album, the follow up to 2007's 'Cookies'. "In a week's time we're back down in London to record the final three songs for our album," he wrote. "One's called 'Kickstrasse' and there might be one called 'Sparks' and another is 'sans title' but it's got a hillbilly giddy-up vibe you might like. I'm excited to say the least." McKeown revealed that the new album is likely to be released in February or March 2009. [...]
I got to spend alot of time with the new album from 1990s over the weekend while driving to and from Bonnaroo. And I must say, it is one big party in CD form. The band hails from Glasgow but their sound is very reminiscent of early punk bands from both the US and overseas. The lead man of 1990s is Jackie McKeown, formerly of the band Yummy Fur, which also boasted the likes of current Franz Ferdinand member Alex Kapranos. McKeown howls through the majority of this record like a man overdosing [...]
