Last Saturday night, punk-indie hero Ted Leo and his group the Pharmacists rocked Chicago's Bottom Lounge . At one point during the show, Leo brought Ralph Darden, lead singer of the Jai-Alai Savant , to the stage for a rambunctious cover of the Fugazi song "Merchandise" from their legendary Repeater album. Well, here's some sweet footage of that performance courtesy of YouTuber MrGtD . Check it out:

Damn, say what you will about Wicker Park (and I've got a lot to say)...but this neighborhood does not fuck around with their festivals' music lineups. [via Smallbar ]

Few live acts today can really match the intensity and stage presence of New York's Les Savy Fav . When the band plays a show, they bring not only music but also a stage show and more excitement than necessary. This is expected; however, this scant description hardly begins to paint the scene at Epiphany Episcopal on Chicago's Near West Side. If you were in attendance, you might have had your face licked by lead singer Tim Harrington or at least witnessed someone have their face licked. The opening band started off the night solidly, Chicago based [...]

One of of my resolutions last January was to "return to my roots" and focus a little more on the punk music that sustained my teenage years. I think I did a pretty good job accomplishing that goal. So you don't like punk music? Tough. Yeah, I like my fair share of indie rock and other such fare, but the Burial record did nothing for me. Neither did the Panda Bear album or Neon Bible . Deal with it. 30. Modest [...]
Despite the heat, it feels more like Spring these days, as a lot of bands and projects are breathing with new life. Here are a few: Strangely, Scarlett Johansson 's forthcoming album of Tom Waits covers is starting to sound interesting. What seemed to be a misguided vanity project - she couldn't have chosen a more diametrically opposed subject, physically, vocally, and, well, idealistically - has turned into an NYC hipster magnet. Pitchfork reports that TV on the Radio 's Dave Sitek has signed on to produce and has brought with him members of [...]

Scarlett Johansson Why Don't You Love Me

I t's a gray and rainy day here in Chicago and here is a little mix that I think fits the mood perfectly. MP3 | TV On The Radio - I Was A Lover Return From Cookie Mountain MP3 | The Eternals - Astra 3B Heavy International MP3 | Aloha - Ice Storming Some Echoes MP3 | [...]

The Jai-Alai Savant - Sugar Free (GSL 2007) The Jai-Alai Savant – Flight of the Bass Delegate / Gold Standard Laboratories Just recently, Chicago's Watchers celebrated their new album release by sharing the stage with The Eternals and The Jai-Alai Savant. It is an interesting trifecta of Chicago acts because they all share a similar ethos yet each concocts a very individual sound. Both the Watchers with their Contortions-meet-Specials avant-funk-punk and The Eternals with their mutated P-Funk Afro-pop crafted with Upsetter-like production [...]

Ahh yes. Flight Of The Bass Delegate is the debut full-length from the Chicago-by-way-of-Philadelphia group called The Jai-Alai Savant . It is full of danceable dub and reggae-influenced proto post-punk that has taken my iPod by storm. The music on Bass Delegate (in some ways) is reminiscent of The Eternals' latest album Heavy International , but is more straightforward and pop-oriented. Even so, there are some meandering dub jams that are simply otherworldly. I mean, who doesn't love the horns? There are also moments that rock with the same punkish guitar punch and angular [...]

The Jai Alai Savant - Scarlett Johansson, Why Don't You Love Me ?
Experimenteller Frickelhardcore, mal catchy, dann wieder fast unzugänglich. The Blood Brothers - Laser Life  The Blood Brothers - Cecilia and the Silhouette Saloon  The Blood Brothers - Peacock [...]

Another Band of the Week post based on a band who I saw live for the first time ever and they're so good, you'll swear you'd love 'em too. They'll be your new favorite band when you're done reading this entry. I was very skeptical about Chicago-by-way-of-Philadelphia band The Jai-Alai Savant when I first saw their name on the same bill as Thunderbirds Are Now! and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
We would like to introduce you to The Jai-Alai Savant . When we kicked back, threw on the headphones, and listened to this artist we thought "Excellent melodic, FUGAZI-meets-THE POLICE-inspired rock" What did you think?
