If we had to choose an anthem for singles during last call, Jail Weddings ' track, "Somebody Lonely" would be a likely candidate. With lyrics such as "Gonna find somebody lonely tonight" and "somebody I don't even know," it aches desperation, but Gabe Hart and his crew have found yet another way to brighten soul-troubling anecdotes with their mash-up of doo-wop and garage rock. Going strong with their aim towards releasing a new music video for each track off of the album, "Love Is Lawless" (there are 13 tracks altogether), the setting in this Lauren Everett-directed and [...]

Creating a video for each song on a record is no easy task. Just ask L.A.'s Jail Weddings , who continue to trudge toward their ambitious goal. Somebody Lonely makes it a half-dozen I think, and MOKB is more than happy to premiere it. Somebody Lonely from Lauren Everett on Vimeo .

Live This Month: June 2011 In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. June kicks off the summer touring season, which means a bunch of acts coming through SF and locals heading out on tour. Not coincidentally, a bunch of the bands included here have new records out this month, including My First Earthquake, Matt Bauer, The Wooden Birds, and Black Lips. Enjoy this mix and then go check out some shows! [...]

A WEEKEND AT SILVERLAKE JUBILEE The Silverlake Jubilee this year was quite the event: two days packed full of excellent musical talent, delicious food and drink, and friends old and new. After downing a Deschutes and watching Will Wiesenfeld change his pants in the green room I saw a little bit of LA fitness phenom SWEAT SPOT before walking down to catch the end of JAIL WEDDINGS . The mood on the street was buoyant, which was strange considering that the world was supposed to end [...]

Los Angeles' garage-punk revision of 60s chamber pop, Jail Weddings are Fronted by Gabriel Hart (explosive frontman and mastermind behind the now defunct LA noir punks The Starvations). Jail Weddings have been described as "Nick Cave fronting The Shangri-Las." The band has carefully crafted the 13 songs on their album Love is Lawless over a three year period (since their inception in the summer of 2007), released October 2010. Download "I Thought You Were Someone I Knew" [...]

This installment of our intermittent mixtapes, The Buzzsicle, Vol. 13, is devoted to the weekend's second annual Silverlake Jubilee , which gives you a lot of bang for 5 bucks. I've compiled an hour's worth of music from 18 of the artists playing the festival. Enjoy. ||| Download: The Buzzsicle 13 (84 MB) After the jump, the tracklisting: Songs by 18 of the bands playing the 2011 Silverlake Jubilee, May 21-22. Mix curated by [...]

L.A.'s Jail Weddings are apparently serious about releasing a video for each and every song on their outstanding Love Is Lawless album. Next up, and number 3 by my count, is Tough Love , a very literal take on the battle of the sexes that finds smarmy frontman Gabriel Hart on the receiving end of the big payback courtesy of background vocalist, Jada Wagensomer. Not exactly high concept, and looks to have been shot on a shoestring, but for some reason, this band just makes everything work [...]

The first thing you need to know about Dante Vs Zombies is that Dante is winning. The frontman of the Silver Lake art-punks, Dante White-Aliano (aka Dante Adrian White and a few other bedeviling variations), reliably channels Suede's Brett Anderson on the sextet's initial single "Yes, I'm Stalking You." He gives the tune an edgy retro-glam feel that's less pronounced on the B-side ("Branded by Nuns") but makes you wonder what the band has in store for the full-length they have in the works. The six-piece does not lack for experience: White-Aliano, Laena Geronimo and Jeff Ehrenberg played [...]

The Silver Lake Jubilee , the neighborhood festival that debuted last year with 50 bands on three stages (along with an army of food trucks and art exhibits), will be back at its Sunset Junction-adjacent locale May 21-22. The set-up, along Myra Avenue between Santa Monica and Sunset Boulevards, will be similar to last year's — as will the admission fee, $5. An announcement is expected later today. The music lineup probably won't be announced until after SXSW, but some of the acts I've heard are in the works are White Sea, Summer Darling, El [...]

Yes, 2011 is still young, but that doesn't change the fact that L.A.'s Jail Weddings is my favorite new discovery . The perfect balance of sacred and profane and absurd, it makes me long for that oft-referenced perfect world in which health care is universal, revenge it always sweet and Love Is Lawless is the party record of the decade. And, yes, men and women of their word that they are, Jail Weddings seems intent on making good on their promise to release a [...]

Jail Weddings is a band I've been desperately in need of without even realizing it. This Los Angeles 10-piece makes beautiful music for ugly people, draping Phil Spector's archetypal wall of sound in velvet and Greek choruses of female voices, only to defile it with a wad of punk attitude. Blessed (cursed?) with the genetic material of Nick Cave, Joe Strummer and Roy Orbison, Gabriel Hart (The Starvations) feels less like a frontman, and more like a golden-throated serial killer or a Sisyphean studboy, publicly reliving endless dramatic heartbreaks, desperate for your approval. [...]
www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR--xZ ltoAE Jail Weddings is making a video for each of the 13 songs on its album, Love Is Lawless . This first one was directed by Kyle Safieh and all the fancy editing comes from Ryan Andrus. Download the song for free here . "I Thought You Were Someone I Knew" makes us want to be drunk and kind of upset and confused about love. It goes well with their other one about the gun... —Daiana Feuer

Lainna Fader Nick Waterhouse and the Turn-Keys "Some Place" (from "Some Place" 73 out now on Pres ) FUCK YEAH TO THIS, I say with grateful gusto. Back with Ty Segall's Epsilons down in Orange County, there was also Nick Waterhouse's Intelligista, high school kids from HB smashing out Animals-style maximum R&B. Intelligista broke up—college robs us again—but now Nick has a new band. A-side "Some Place" is risen-from-the-crypt Savage Kick early '60s R&B. Wild or Norton or Jail Weddings or Hanni [...]
