Over the weekend The xx threw their first festival, Night + Day, in Lisbon. The first of three shows featured acts like John Talabot, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, and of course a performance from The xx. Held on the water near an old castle the festival was completely curated by members of The xx, from the location down to the acts. Red Bull Music Academy put together an incredibly impressive video called "Too Old To Be New, Too New To Be Classic," a short look at the history and personality of DFA Records. It's a lovely collection or oral histories, cheeky one-liners (like James Murphy asserting that peanut butter is the greatest American flavor) and "I'm so glad they captured that" photos and videos. This year marks the 12-year anniversary of the James Murphy , Jonathan Galkin and Tim Goldsworthy-founded DFA Records, one of the definitive record labels of the dance-punk scene over the last decade. Red Bull Music Academy has released a rather fascinating short documentary in honor of the occasion. Titled 12 Years of DFA: Too Old To Be New, Too New To Be Classic , the film chronicles the history of the label and its founders, as well as its artists (including Murphy's now defunct LCD Soundsystem ). James Murphy has been keeping himself busy since the disbanding of LCD Soundsystem, from coffee shops to DJ sets on the S.S. Coachella . Today, though, we see the DFA cofounder back in the studio with none other than Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs . In a London loft-turn-studio, the pair tinker with various instruments and audio machinery. The footage makes sense, given Murphy previously stating he was planning to record with the band. I've grown quite fond of James Murphy as of late. Although I purchased the band's debut self-titled release back in 2005, I didn't really keep up with the band, and probably missed many an opportunity to see them live. Sometimes it's better late than never I suppose. So, moving on from LCD Soundsystem, Murphy has been selected by Ron Howard to direct a short film, and he needs your photos for inspiration. James Murphy stopped by Jimmy Fallon's show last night to talk about the upcoming documentary, Shut Up and Play the Hits , which captures the last days of LCD Soundsystem leading up to their big farewell show at Madison Square Garden. The documentary drops on July 18th and will play at select theaters for one night only. Although LCD Soundsystem called it quits last year they're new documentary, Shut Up and Play the Hits, will be released for one night only next weekend in Theaters across the US.
