This wasn't a Xmas gift....it was one I picked up in the middle of last year while browsing round one of the few remaining branches of Fopp Records in Glasgow City Centre and one which was read in a few days. I'm giving it a mention here as I saw some copies on sale in the same shop for just £3 the other day which is an astonishing bargain given its list price of £9.99 The book is, as its cover indicates, a series of extracts from the [...]

Unbeknownst to myself at the time, James Yorkston was the first Fence Collective artist I ever really, seriously fell for. Back when he first released Moving Up Country I was pretty damn impressed, but when he then followed it up with the outstandingly beautiful Just Beyond the River a couple of years later I was entirely smitten. For all that, however, it's now been a good few years since I've seen him play, despite both he and I being at pretty much every Homegame festival for the last few years. As with [...]

Field Music To kick this weeks freebies off we have one of the most under-rated bands in the UK, Sunderland's finest sons have just announced that their their fourth album, Plumb, will be out in February next year. As a wee teaser they've made the song "(I Keep Thinking About) A New Thing" free to download from their website . The Fruit Tree Foundation After the success of last year's First Edition album, Rod Jones of Idlewild fame has done something a bit different this year, as they've launched a [...]

The above photo is of the Palm House in Edinburgh's Botanic Gardens, and was taken and passed on to me by Dylan, of Blueback Hotrod legend. And given that the weather outside is all kinds of shit I thought there would be a sort of bitter irony in using it today. See - that's how nice Edinburgh can be, so what the fuck is this pissing rain all about? Anyhow, traditional British whingeing aside, it's going to be a pretty bloody mental week this week. Thursday is going to be a particular swine, what with the awesome David [...]

Rock n roll books! With the income from recorded music on the wane, it should be no surprise to see artists from a wider range of backgrounds branching out into autobiography. This year has seen a fair number of indie-scene scions try their hand (aided and abetted in some cases by indie labels such as Domino and Rough Trade making their own forays into the publishing world). After all the chances of the likes of Luke [...]
In case you have been living under a rock, here's an important reminder: this Saturday, the 16th of April, is Record Store Day, which means get out there and support your local independent record retailers! It's now more important more than ever, as high street shops shutter up as more people download music online (legally or illegally)... One label that is celebrating this event in a big way is Domino Records , whose most famous recent acquisition is probably Ireland's Villagers (pictured above). The Domino "menu", if you will, [...]

June 20th is set to be an important day for Scottish indie troop Copy Haho - it'll mark the release of the bands debut album. Here's what the band had to say about the recording of the forthcoming album: "We recorded the album at Chemikal Underground's Chem19 studios outside Glasgow, in Scotland. It was recorded with Jamie Savage ( The Phantom Band , James Yorkston …) and was mixed by Simon Ward (of Errors ). Michael Marshall played viola on the album. Thanks, Michael. The album is being released [...]
Waterson and Knight are the children of the late Lal Waterson, and the Waterson/ Carthy influence is very evident in the musical, vocal and lyrical phrasing of this charmingly nostalgic debut. The album starts gently, with guitar and voice tracks peppered lightly with violin, piano and harmony voices - those on 'Father Us' provided by Kathryn Williams, who co-wrote that track and closer 'Secret Smile'.'Curse the Day' (a short ode to PMT) changes the mood with its shifting, traditional folk inspired rhythm; and the instrumentation builds up on 'The Loosened Arrow', which showcases marvellous vocal interplay between Waterson and guest [...]

This is one of those weeks where there could be two of you and you'd still probably not quite manage to get to all the decent gigs in the city this week. Personally I am going to try and keep it a bit calm, but I have my doubts as to whether or not I am likely to succeed. Mrs. Toad, no doubt, will be wildly impressed. I had fun down in London last week, incidentally. As I mentioned, I did a quick interview with Tom Robinson for BBC 6Music while I was there and, in typical fashion, [...]

With hindsight, the most endearing qualities of James Yorkston's music have always hinted at a literary future. His songwriting is graceful, patient and precise. His best work is at once powerful and serene. He calls on a range of traditional influences, from folk music to literature, but rarely sounds anything but original. So whilst there are plenty of potentially great writers within the Domino stable, it's no surprise that Yorkston's debut is the first release on their Domino Press. From the outset, it's clear that he has accepted the opportunity with both hands: It's Lovely To Be [...]

This is er… well, "one of those podcasts". You know, the ones where you're half pissed before lunch and basically mumble your way through an hour or so of incoherent rambling? Yes, one of those. I even try and do something of a Cloud Sounds tribute by playing two songs available on 73 single from Cloud Sounds Records and then by playing two songs from bands I got into by listening to Cloud Sounds' podcast but unfortunately the fact that I am joined in this podcast by Andy and Paddy from Gerry Loves Records means that more [...]

James Yorkston - Woozy With Cider If you are reading this later, you might notice these words are different. Initially I tried writing from the point of view of the girl in this song. But that's wrong. Her song is different, it doesn't sound anything like this one. It didn't fit. I'm not sure what her song is. Maybe I wouldn't like it. But I know what this song is. This song is an old picture of that road trip you took after freshman year. Forget the all-nighters you pulled, erase the [...]
It's wild, Jim, but not as we know it: Fence Records' Halloween party this year will be taking a theme of "space cowboys and aliens". The event will take place on 31st October in Glasgow at Stereo (and the adjacent The Old Hairdresser), from 2pm to 2am. Just take care to look out for Reavers. [...]

Long before there was such thing as an American folk movement, the tradtunes and folk hymns of Britain, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales - including the 305 songs and variants which would eventually become known as the Child Ballads, after to their late nineteenth century collector Francis James Child - came to our shores singly, one or two at a time, in the hands and voices of several successive centuries of migrant generations. There, they found listeners longing for the sounds and stories of their ancestral homes, who took the songs, made them theirs, and turned them outwards to [...]

Angel Echoes (Jon Hopkins remix) by Four Tet Her har du ældre, smukt Jon Hopkins remix. [...]
