For some reason, the Drive-By Truckers last few albums have left me cold, while former Trucker Jason Isbell seems to have stolen their mojo on Here We Rest , easily his most consistent record. Here We Rest is rooted in its southerness, with a deep Alabama groove set to fluttering fiddles and sure-handed shuffles that make characters like the broken soul barfly in "Codeine" come alive even as they battle addiction, and his version of Candi Staton's southern soul standard "Heart on A String" sounds like a lost Delbert McClinton classic. [...]

Last month I asked if you guys would be interested in a monthly Ninebullets Spotify playlist. You seemed pretty responsive to the idea so here is the first one. This playlist features every band that was featured on ninebullets in the month of January that was also on Spotify. I hope you enjoy it and if you do, pass it along to some friends. Like I keep saying, every new pair of ears these bands reach is a potential fan/head at show. This month's playlist features: Lauderdale, Ryan Adams, Jason Isbell, The Far West, Will Hoge, [...]

Filed under: News , Holy Hell Getty Images/AP Photo Jason Isbell, singer and former Drive-By Truckers member, launched a Twitter feud with country singer Dierks Bentley last week. According to Billboard , Isbell says Bentley's new single 'Home' is similar to 'In A Razor Town,' a song from Isbell's 2007 solo album 'Sirens Of The Ditch.' Isbell raised the issue on Jan. 6 with a tweet repeatedly misspelling [...]
It all started when former Drive-By Truckers member Jason Isbell tweeted ""Dierks" [Bentley] has officially ripped off my song "In A Razor Town." Dierks is a douchebag" for Bentley's song "Home," a song written co-written Bentley, Dan Wilson and the Beaver brothers. Here's the basic sequence for you: So, there you have it. Listen to both songs after the jump and decide for yourself. [...]
Last night, on his twitter feed Jason Isbell leveled the following charge: " "Dierks" has officially ripped off my song "In A Razor Town." Dierks is a douchebag. " The song Jason was referring to is a song called "Home". Having never heard the song I shot on over to youtube to check it out and....wow. Personally, I think it's way too close to be coincidence but I'd love to hear your opinion on the subject. Here are both songs (cause I imagine you've not heard the Dierks song either). Jason Isbell: [...]

All albums are linked to iTunes. To play all Soundcloud clips continuously, click on the play button in the bottom right of the screen. TOP 10 ALBUMS 10. Gold Leaves - The Ornament 9. 11. William Elliot Whitmore-Field Songs : Songs about working and struggling and grasping to the only piece of fucking dirt that yours and some SOB trying to cheat you out of it. Thanks WEW. I'm taking bullshit handyman work over the winter just so I can afford to eat Burger King and drink a couple of Miller High Lifes every once in a while, so I'm a disciple of these songs. I wonder what the farmers in Iowa do in the wintertime to survive. Is the suicide rate higher then? He's singing about [...]
Why 13, you ask? Well, it's my favorite number and, conveniently, it is also the number of albums that grabbed my attention this year. Plus, I like the title of "Lucky 133 for my list. 13. Ryan Adams - Ashes & Fire . This is the album I've turned to all year whenever I've been in the mood to chill. Perfect for sitting back with a bottle of scotch. (Sound pretentious enough?) On a side note, Ryan did a couple excellent covers of my music idol, Bob Mould, this year: Black Sheets of Rain (Live on [...]
No song was more infectious this year than Foster the People's Pumped up Kids. What started as a catchy indie rock diddy took off and became an international hit rocketing up the Billboard charts and propelling rock album sales. Most people still don't know the song is about a school shooting. Maybe that why despite its popular success, it's still retained its indie cred. Hopefully this

Sharon Van Etten Editor's Note: I don't do "Best of" or "Top" lists, but I do like things … as hard as it might seem to believe. I'm going to post a few editorials between now and the end of the year about the various things I've liked about 2011. For me to do a post on all the songs I liked that came out in 2011 I'd have to type for about 20 hours straight. I'm going to pair down the list through a couple of parameters. [...]

Ever since he split from Drive-By Truckers back in 2007, my opinions of Jason Isbell's musical output has been very hot and cold. Do I think that he is a tremendously talented musician and songwriter? That point was never in doubt. What I take issue with is the fact that this talent has just not manifested itself over the course of his first two solo albums with the 400 Unit. I always felt the Truckers had a knack for helping to accentuate his strengths as a songwriter, and I've never been convinced that the 400 Unit has been able to [...]

1 Band of Holy Joy How To Kill A Butterfly Wonderfully crafted the songs preach with a desolate beauty leaving behind plenty of food-for-thought I've listened and enjoyed some great music this year but none better than this album from Band Of Holy Joy which just stopped me in my tracks, but it doesn't end with the musical brilliance as the CD release is packaged beautifully too in a book format with wonderful original art work by Inga Tillere , for your chance [...]
Today we presented our Best 75 Songs of 2011 . Here are several more just bubbling under the top 75... Artist: Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit Image: http://www.popmatters.com/imag es/news_art/j/jason-isbell-and -the-400-unit-here-we-rest.jpg Display Width: 200 80. Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit"Alabama Pines" Jason Isbell's career since leaving the Drive-By Truckers has sometimes seemed like the work of a man who hasn't quite reached his full potential. But this simple country song highlights his best qualities as a songwriter. Essentially it's a love letter to Alabama, namechecking many of the state's small towns. But Isbell adds depth to...

Beck I wrote, and deleted, my original Thanksgiving editorial. I'm opting for this instead: a collection of live videos of artists that I like as much as I like cornbread dressing (no, not stuffing, dressing). Happy Thanksgiving. Steve Earle - "I Feel Alright" (Live) Son Volt "Catching On" (Live) Nikki Lane - "Gone, Gone, Gone" (Live) Merle Haggard - "Misery and Gin" (Live) Vern Gosdin "Chiseled in Stone" (Live) Jason Isbell - "Alabama Pines" [...]
