Not sure what brings J Robbins to Columbus for a Friday night Happy Hour show, but what a lucky score for KOBO . For indie rock geeks with their feet firmly planted in the '90s (yes, I'm one of you!), this may be THE show of 2011. Robbins will be performing with cellist Gordon Withers and it's not at all a stretch to think this will be a stripped-down (yet, somehow, at the same time, face-melting) tour of the singer/producer's recorded history, from Jawbox to [...]
As the frontman of Jawbox and Burning Airlines and the producer behind a fistful of punk rock classics, J. Robbins is the man responsible for some of the greatest clanging, scraping, angular music of the past two decades. And now Robbins is back with his newest band, Office Of Future Plans. Below, listen to "Salamander," the (fucking great) first track on the band's forthcoming self-titled album. Read More...
Folks of a certain age likely think of J. Robbins as the guy listed as the recording engineer on a million indie rock CDs from the last decade. But Mr. Robbins' personal history has greater musical import (not to discount his excellent recordings), first as one of the main creative engines (if not *the* main creative engine) in D.C. post-hardcore legends Jawbox , and later as the fronter of Burning Airlines . Jawbox's superlative collection For Your Own Special Sweetheart , released in 1994, practically defined the term post-hardcore, and it contains what [...]
This power trio from Columbus, Ohio sounds like my CD collection circa 1994 - it's beer-soaked, guitar-driven, genre-escaping rock played with all dials set to 11. Oh yeah, it should be mentioned that the guys were able to cross at least one music-related item off the Speed Governor bucket list - the legendary Steve Albini recorded these tracks at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. Words by Rick Moslen Growing up, many of us believed in punk rock but never considered ourselves "punk." We moshed at shows, bought $3 Epitaph compilations, and complained about Green Day not being a real punk band, but despite a few oddly colored hair manifestations, we never looked the part. Then high school arrived and we discovered Fugazi (cue Handel's Hallelujah Chorus). Not only did they look like regular dudes, but their aesthetic was as essential as the music. My high school punk band suddenly sported Fugazi -esque principles: [...]

I have a treat of a Jawbox cover for everyone. It's from Evening Man, who has released one of my favorite albums this year (here's the album review I wrote for The Last Night ). If you haven't checked out The Last Night , go to Bandcamp right now and immerse yourself. There's a pretty neat little story behind the song choice. Jawbox was the first band that Paul ever saw live when they were opening for Stone Temple Pilots on tour. The original Savory has a grungey sound to [...]

Deftones have announced a covers LP to be released exclusively for Record Store Day on April 16th. The release will compile their various covers over the years including The Smiths , The Cure , Duran Duran , The Cars , Drive Like Jehu , Jawbox , Cardigans , Japan and Sade . No Weezer covers unfortunately. Full tracklist on the graphic above.

A and I took a much-needed trip to SF this weekend. Getting time to hang out with besties and walk around a city that feels real can totally put my mind at ease after a month-long sojourn in the weirdness that is Southern California. Saturday night was a bit raucous. Numerous bottles of whiskey were consumed. I would like to clear my name now by saying that I stayed soberist, of course that was after accidentally ordering 16 onces of Bushmills at a bar in The Mission. Regardless, the evening closed around 3AM with everyone [...]

Admittedly, I was planning on taking today off. Presidents' Day may be a silly holiday (jamming together some Rushmore birthdays and calling it a nationally meaningful day...c'mon), but it has remarkable durability for justifying a day away from work. And since I dodged the bullet of actually going to work today, I should at least pony up a song. So, in the spirit of this barely-a-holiday, here's one from our nation's capital. A band as great and dead as the aforementioned Washington and Lincoln. Sorta. Whatever. Rockage! Jawbox - Reel
I feel like this week's featured band is sort of cheating in a way. Most of the bands that I'll be featuring are probably not very well known outside of their hometowns and are using Bandcamp.com as a way to reach an audience that they normally wouldn't be able to. But, when I heard that J. Robbins of Jawbox , Burning Airlines , etc. fame had a new band and that he was making that band's first 73 single available digitally on Bandcamp, well, I had to toss my rules aside. I don't [...]

We are so excited to premiere the latest recording by DC band True Womanhood . The first release of said sessions will be a 73 single split release between Environmental Aesthetics Recordings and Sockets Records . Here is one of the tracks off the 73. Listen. Downloadable: Last Rites (mp3) And look for True [...]
Pitchforkmedia is the site most responsible for my discovery of the music featured on this blog. In fact, if it weren't for Pitchfork there may not have been a Vague Space , at least not in its indie-rock heavy form. Back in 2001, I'd pretty much given up on modern music, with so-called alternative devolving into horrible mainstream rap-rock in the late '90s and true alternative bands disappearing from radio altogether. The Internet had not quite yet changed the way we listen to music (people still bought CDs then, I know - shocking) and I'd spent a couple years [...]
Louisville's Coliseum has a new album, House With a Curse , out today. And in honor of the hellacious record's release, frontman Ryan Patterson is taking the reigns of Buzzgrinder today. This video has circulated around on the VHS trader circuit for over twenty years now, I was very excited to get a DVD copy recently. When people talk about "heavy" music these days, they are way off base. This is what heavy means to me. Ignition guitarist Chris Bald [...]
By Matt Jarrard Gordon Withers made a rock and roll album of Jawbox songs played entirely on the cello. Different? Yes. Well done? Absolutely...Gordon is a classically trained cellist, with an ear and passion for rock and roll...you've got to hear this to believe it: Gordon Withers - Savory (Jawbox Cover) Gordon's story is a good one...a [...]

We realize of course that we don't always post the most rocking of tunes, at least not of this order, but we all come from a pretty solid punk background, or at least I do. Kentucky band, Coliseum , have a new new album, House With a Curse , which comes out June 22nd, and since it's produced by J. Robbins of Jawbox . It's a blistering tune, but it's one I've been jamming to all day long. Happy Friday Folks! [...]
image Folks, most of you out there probably don't know where the word came from. Many of you are thinking violent thoughts about followers of this phenomenon. In Mexico, they get treated like american homosexuals in the 70's and 80's, subjected to harrassment and physical assault. What am I referring to? Emo. Emo, emo-core, screamo, &etc., and I bet you think you know what it is, too. Let's be clear about one thing; lame is lame, and what these histrionic youth are listening to is L A M E.
