Jay-Z recently spoke with BlackTreeTv about channeling his inner Jay Gatsby and being an executive producer on the flick of the summer (at least we hope so). Jay mentions how the collaboration, if you will, came about, dating back to the making of WTT, where Leo was present for a studio sesh. Which is awesome, and makes us love DiCaprio that much more, but we're a little puzzled at how Russel Crowe prevailed in the shout-out contest after that. Ah, the mysteries of life. The post Video: Jay-Z on Executive [...]

At the very least, The Great Gatsby will have a phenomenal score. The man in charge of the film's music is Hova himself and he's bringing Hip-Hop and more to the American classic novel. "$100 Bill" is the first of the Gatsby tracks we've heard that features Hov on the mic. On initial listening, he sounds somewhat reinvigorated, weaving in references of Slick Rick and a certain yellow car that plays a symbolic role in the film. All things aside, it's one of his better recent works and throws more evidence [...]

MVP of the year (thus far) goes to Pharrell Williams, for being one of the most diligent producers out there right now. After his collaborations with Robin Thicke on "Blurred Lines," Tyler, the Creator on "IFHY," and Daft Punk on "Get Lucky," it appears that The Neptunes producer will have some more new material coming, [...]

Wyclef Jean spits a freestyle over Jay-Z' "Open Letter."

President Obama recently sat down for an interview with Today's Savannah Guthrie, during which he discussed a multitude of topics from gun control to abortion. One of the hot issues Guthrie brought up was Jay-Z and Beyonce's recent trip to Cuba because apparently this is one of our Nation's biggest concerns and Press Secretary Jay Carney's remarks last week just weren't convincing enough. In the rapper's " Open Letter " he claims that he and his wife received clearance for the trip from The White House, yet according to the President that's not necessarily [...]
Please, no. Let's avoid the whole issue of taking shots at Jay-Z and Beyoncé. We'll ignore that line about being "white like Casper." We'll just let that whole "funky fresh rhymes" line slip. Technically, this is just embarrassing. Delivery is stuck in the '80s, the flow is basic as fuck, timing is choppy, and the vocals are bland. Leave rap alone, Ms. Perino. Well my name is Tiny-D, and I'm here to say/I bust funky-fresh rhymes in a major way So I'm white like Casper, got a dog named Jasper/and if you don't [...]
This is turning into a weird, weird news day. Earlier today, Jay-Z released a new one-off song called " Open Letter ," part of which was about his recent trip to Cuba and a couple of Congress members' inquiries into it. Jay sprinked in a few lines about Obama, who, according to Jay, said that they should go chill on a beach together and that he shouldn't worry about it. Within hours, someone actually asked White House Press Secretary Jay Carney about the exchange, and Carney claimed that this conversation did not, in fact, take place: "It's a song [...]

As we reported earlier this year, Jay-Z had a large hand in the music component of the upcoming Baz Lurhmann's film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby . The tracklist for the soundtrack, which Jay executive produced, has been revealed and includes an eclectic array of artists. On the theme of the music, Lurhmann says , "While we acknowledge, as Fitzgerald phrased it, 'the Jazz Age,' and this is the period represented on screen, we - our audience - are living in 'the Hip-Hop Age' and want our viewers to feel the impact of [...]
Apparently, drag races are still a thing people do to settle arguments, or at least that's the case in The-Dream's latest visuals. Alongside Fabulous, "Slow It Down" features the singer/songwriter in a 1950s inspired storyline where he's lusting after a girl from a different social circle than his. It's a standard Terius Nash video treatment where the plot is as seductive as the sultry beat in the track. The-Dream also stopped by 106 & Park today, where he premiered the video and also offered up some new details on his upcoming LP, IV Play . He revealed [...]

Late to post this, but as I’ve been out of country enjoying life, I won’t be too hard on myself… Jay-Z takes down Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe by the supremely pumped K Dot, evidenced by this video of Kendrick Lamar listening to Jay-Z’s verse for the first time . Ridic.

The hype surrounding Kendrick Lamar & Jay-Z's recently released collaborative record “ Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe ” (Remix) is still going strong and now rap nerds are going crazy over this video of Kendrick's reaction to his first-listen of Hova's verse on the track. A little background info on the event is given below alongside the video itself. " While in NYC, TDE heads to a late night studio session for ScHoolboy Q’s upcoming album ‘OxyMoron’ where TDE CEO ‘TopDawg’ happens to surprise Kendrick with a verse from Jay-Z on the official “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe” [...]
In an industry where creating a "hard" image is deemed necessary, genuine glimpses into rapper's personalities are scarce. On a busy morning back in February, Kendrick Lamar was hanging with Schoolboy Q in what seemed like a normal recording session visit. Little did he know, TDE and his crew had a surprise waiting for him: the unreleased remix to his popular hit "B*tch, Don't Kill My Vibe" featuring a heart-stopping verse by none other than Jay-Z . Hov's spitting has generated immense amount of buzz for the remix as of late. [...]

After the mini Destiny's Child reunion and the superbowl performance of recent weeks, Beyonce returns with the first glimpse of her upcoming new album. Produced by Hit-Boy, the man behind Kanye & Jay's 'Niggas In Paris', it finds B at her domineering best - "Don't get it twisted, get it twisted, this my sh-t, bow down b-tches." The track is scuzzy, beat-heavy gem, with Beyonce growling over the top of glittery, stuttering beats and electro-swoons. It's pretty damn good.

A couple weeks back I hit the Kids These Days rehearsal studio in the west loop with some friends from Life+Times. The session was great, as the energetic prodigious band decoded their Traphouse Rock single "Who Do U-Luv" for Jay-Z's Life+Times website. The site also covered Chance The Rapper as of late, helping showcase Chicago's most talented new artists to an international audience. Shot by the Scheme Engine team.

While down at SXSW, Young Guru was in the middle of a DJ set when he decided to unleash an exclusive sneak peak to Kendrick Lamar's "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe" featuring the one and only Jay-Z. Both emcees go in, just out of respect for one another and it truly elevates the record to a whole different level.
Kendrick Lamar is, at the moment, the general-consensus greatest young rapper in the universe, which Jay-Z is the general-consensus best old rap man left standing. When those two guys link up with each other, it's a big deal. And that's why it's worth clicking on the video below, even though it's an insanely irritating way to experience a new song. DJing at Austin's FADER Fort yesterday, the regular Jay recording engineer Young Guru played a clip of the remix, yelling over it the whole time and cutting it off after a couple of minutes. But it's enough to get across [...]
