BY DANIEL BEAUREGARD NEXT Collective is a New York-based group comprised of some of the most notable young names in jazz. Except for producer Chris Dunn, there isn’t a single musician credited on the album that was born before 1980. Despite their youth, each of these musicians has already carved out a place in jazz history. Their new album, aptly titled Cover Art , finds NEXT Collective giving contemporary takes on an eclectic mix of well-known pop, rock, and hip-hop tunes, including a few from my youth, including [...]

ne:o are a five-piece group in Dresden, Germany, who blur genres between rock, jazz, and electronic music. They sometimes remind us of The Art of Noise and the great jazz-post-rock experimental bands. Other times they call to mind Jaga Jazzist , who Wikipedia labels as Jazz , Nu jazz , Acid jazz , Electronica , Experimental rock , and Post-rock . ne:o drifts between those realms, too. German netlabel Aaahh Records shares [...]

New music aficionados take note and stay tuned for more that's sure to come from Idesia. lustfound by idesia onacloud by idesia Indesia [...]
Bass master Thundercat has dropped yet another track from his sophomore full-length, which is on the way soon via Brainfeeder records. The track's title is "Oh Sheit It's X," and it's led to yet another moment where I'm left wondering how good this album is actually going to be. Thundercat's first album took on many of the same funk and jazz fusion influences the song above does, but translated them into something futuristic, intergalactic thanks to production help from longtime collaborator Flying Lotus. This new cut takes a lot of the same funk tropes, [...]
TThe sharp, agreeable Haymaker will be Noah Preminger's first album since the last one Before The Rain (2011) catapulted the tenor saxophone master to the front ranks of today's current crop of young lions. On that last project, Preminger assembled a band full of heavy hitters around himself and made a widely lauded record, one that we ourselves proclaimed contained [...]

Dayna Kurtz' new album, Secret Canon Vol. 2, is a thing of beauty. The followup to last year's Secret Canon 1, Secret Canon Vol. 2 is collection of rare blues and jazz covers from the 1940-60s with a few originals ... Continue reading
The follow-up to 2010s' Betweenwhile by Bacteria To Boys involved a transition from Darius Jones to Jon Irabagon in the sax role, but also a transition for its chief, Mike Pride, too. As a new dad, the drummer, composer and bandleader has made next his BTB record reflect an altered new outlook that comes with being a new parent. The [...]
Best known as the drummer in the barrier-breaking metal band Living Colour, Will Calhoun has quietly put together an impressive resume in jazz - notably performing with Wayne Shorter on the Grammy-winning effort High Life, while also appearing along side Jaco Pastorious, Pharoah Sanders, Jack DeJohnette, Marcus Miller and Herb Alpert, among others. Life in This World, due May 14, [...]

Viktar Siamashka and Co , a free-jazz quartet in Mink, Bielarus, just released their Biotope album on the avant-garde netlabel Black Square ( Чёрный квадрат ). These spontaneous improvised pieces were recorded live "in anticafe Fisher House, Miensk, Bielarus" and fans of improvised free-jazz will want to hear this one. Siamashka performs beautifully on woodwinds and brass. The group -- Viktar Siamashka (winds, percussion), Eryk Arlou-Shymus (double-bass), Maxim Iukin (voice, percussion), Raman Jarash (big drum) -- holds together as if they have played these pieces for years. [...]
Mind blowing stuff from three quite different instrumental bands from Melbourne. - By Sander van den Driesche

As if having a hyphenated name wasn't unusual enough, a 1950s swing band known as the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra had a couple of other odd attributes. For one thing, the group reached its peak during the twilight of the big band era. It was also unusual for having dual bandleaders, but the real oddity was how they turned the orchestra into a unique musical experiment. Brooklyn-born Eddie Sauter and New Jersey native Bill Finegan were both consummate professionals, with backgrounds that included classical musical educations and decades of service in some of the biggest of the big [...]
Albums with as many songs as a 45 single are bound to be interesting, and that's undeniably the case for Mike Pride's dual epic numbers compiled into his upcoming Drummer's Corpse album. Pride has always thrived on the outskirts of jazz, a trait reinforced by studying under Milford Graves and hanging out with the likes of Anthony Braxton, Otomo Yoshihide [...]

On Mother's Day, r&b/jazz singer, songwriter, and yes, mom, Carol Duboc will present in digital form her newest album Smile. Her sixth album represents a collaboration with fusion giant Jeff Lorber, co-writing and co-producing all ten songs with one of contemporary jazz's most influential keyboardists and composers of all time. Moreover, Lorber brought in some of his heavy hitter session [...]

Whenever I describe a jazz artist as unique and eccentric, using odd meters and irregular note progressions, that means I'm describing a whack jazz artist about 99% of the time. Reedman Daniel Bennett on the hand belongs in that one percent. When taking in the Daniel Bennett Group's Peace and Stability Among Bears a couple of years ago, I was [...]
I SUGGEST that you put the new album by Heliocentrics at the centre of your universe. Because 13 Degrees Of Reality is almost unreal in its fusion of jazz, psychedelia, electronica, funk, world, krautrock and more. Orbiting around the one constant here - the sturdy drumwork of legend Malcom Catto - the fuzzy guitar work and incessant basslines wander like particles in a dust cloud, this musical Brownian motion knitting to create something unique that exists in the vacuum between all of the aforementioned genres. The result is a cosmic creation that is otherworldly, epic and truly [...]
