By the late 1970s Gato was recording for A&M and moved his music towards Jazz-Pop, Jazz Funk with albums like "Caliente!" (featuring his best known song, a version of Carlos Santana's "Europa") and "Tropico". Though he continued to record and perform into the 1980s, the death of his wife Michelle led him to withdraw from the public. The saxophone is very much maligned instrument for good reason. In most instances, it can spread so much smooth cheese that it is hard to taste the funk. This tune is from Webster Lewis's 8 For The 80's album (1979) The man has a Master's degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, yet Webster Lewis's best known recordings are his mid/late 70's disco tunes. In my opinion, he is a terrific pianist/keyboardist who should have been able to establish himself in the Jazz genre. Instead he worked in the background in various positions. mp3: The Ray Charles Orchestra - Sidewinder Today's selection came out in 1971 on Ray Charles' own label, Tangerine Records. Sidewinder is a cover of the Lee Morgan hard-bop Blue Note hit from 1963. Charles' version doesn't surpass the original, but it brings some harder funk flavour to what's already a smashing tune. It was released as the b-side to another instrumental, the funky Booty Butt, and features Leroy Cooper on baritone sax.
Finally had a chance to record this one. I went through a pile of records the other day and pulled my "Jump Street Band"- "The Groove" a Jazz Funk number from this 9 Piece band out of Philly.
