To make it clear from the jump, J. Cole states at the beginning of "Cole Summer" that this is "not a preview of what the album's gonna bring you." That album, of course, is his sophomore full-length, Born Sinner , which is set to drop June 25. Still, single/preview or not, "Cole Summer" is a nice lil' track to hold over fans until he gives us something proper. It's a little sloppy and rough, but that's also where it gets its charm. But, surprisingly, it really works here on a new version of Major Lazer's " Get Free ", which now features the Fayetteville, N.C. rapper spitting sharp bars over the island-y production. It's essentially a straightforward remix as nothing about the original has changed—yup, Amber Coffman is still on the hook—but I'll be damned if we shouldn't get more collabs like this. The story behind J. Cole 's latest free release is a good one. After debuting "I'm A Fool" at a recent Rock The Bells show, he talked to a fan who expressed interest in hearing the proper studio version. And by "interest," I'm sure the kid was ridiculously excited. Now, apparently Cole sent him the track and last night, seemingly out of nowhere, the Cee-Lo-sampling "I'm A Fool" appeared online as a free download. Enjoy.
