If this is your first time seeing any of the artists mention, on behalf on the rest of the TSS Crew , I'd like to give you all a warm welcome to The Smoking Section as every last one of these rooks have been featured heavily on the site. None of these rappers are actually "new" or "freshman" in the traditional sense. Now before any of you knowitalls try to pick apart the list on who should be added or omitted, look on the bright side. As our culture's most visible platform, XXL [...]

BRM (Beyond Race Magazine), an internationally distributed music, entertainment and culture publication, gives a behind-the-scenes look at the J. Cole photo shoot for the front cover of their upcoming issue. The shoot took place at the Rocawear headquarters and outside in New York's Times Square. This will be J. Cole's first national cover story.

First and foremost, I'd like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas. Christmas is always a wonderful time of year so I hope everyone makes the most of it and has a fantastic time with their friends and families. I'm gonna keep this short and sweet; first up is behind the scene footage of the video shoot to Lil Waynes latest video for his latest tune 'On Fire' (my personal favourite track off the album Rebirth). Video looks good, we'll see what the public reception of the track is when it gets digitally released in the new year. [...]

For all of the perks an affiliation with Jay-Z should bring, J. Cole has managed to live & rhyme a quiet existence, flying under the radars of most media outlets. I mean, of course we've plugged his work & tapped him for a Smoking Session . Yet, outside of that, he's remained elusive in an age where we see & hear newly christened next big things on every remix, web site and paparazzi incident. One of the endearing things about Cole is his ability to stay [...]
Touring isn't what it used to be. I told you that they weren't letting anyone backstage @ the BP3 show and J. Cole spoke on how there weren't any groupies gettin' their back out as far as he could see. Bummer. I think we all grow up having wet dreams where floozy after floozy in countless city comes through...well I ain't tellin' you my dreams. We all have a romanticized perception of what the life of an entertainer is supposed to be [...]

At this point in my blogging career, there's no need to describe situations as "surreal." They aren't, so using the word is hyperbole. Not to say that they aren't unique and that doing this hasn't afforded its share of opportunities that I know I wouldn't have encountered otherwise. If Jay could trip a referee @ MSG, I could have effortlessly reached out and tripped him up on Friday (thanks Laura @ 360). There are no secrets on what to expect @ [...]
Really dope interview done by the folks at Hard Knock TV . J. Cole speaks on everything from the Jay and Beanie situation to the recent stanky face he made at an interviewer saying he was the next Drake. spotted at

Photo Credit: Honey Mag Fayetteville's own Jermaine Cole exploded on to the scene in 2009 and began climbing your favorite MC's favorite new MC list. Everybody was surprised by the new kid making waves, his lyrical depth and cadence, and that refreshing sound he brought to the Interwebs and radio this year. In reality, J.Cole has been manhandling the microphone since his mid-teens in North Carolina. He moved to New York to chase his dreams and...the story has been told a million and one times. Only thing different about this story [...]

Grip Plyaz Performs Live @ A3C Perfect Attendance from The Smoking Section on Vimeo . I started writing this post on like Monday, but I think A3C threw off my whole sleeping cycle since I've been tired pretty much all week. The performance of the night goes to Grip Plyaz. Basically he came late, missed his time slot to perform, then went on stage like an hour late (without permission) and proceeded to give this show. He asked all the hipsters to put their hands in the air....."Lemme see [...]
While driving over to The Five Spot, Contra™ commented on the full moon that was on the horizon. It was at that point that we suspected the night had the potential to be magical or disastrous. And it was actually a little bit of both. The Crew disassembled from Voltron form for the last night and actually covered two events. It was at point that I learned I was to be the red cat ... literally as I was thrown into video camera duties. Much respect to BK and The SP Agency , because I felt like I [...]
A3C Street Cypher @ Vinnie Styles from The Smoking Section on Vimeo . Courtesy of Vinnie's Styles & SMKA Productions When we finally arrived at the J.Cole in-store at Vinnie's Styles, the establishment was shoulder to shoulder with nothing but rappers, DJ's and their managers. After briefly shaking hands and talking to the Roc Nation artist and his reps, Mike from SMKA walked up and said "Do you wanna set up a cypher outside?" Initially, [...]

Just to reiterate what Gotty said yesterday , if you weren’t @ The Five Spot Friday night, it was your loss. It’s crazy what a difference a day can make, but the place was packed out. How packed? Full capacity packed for a couple of hours. So packed that they cut off access to the VIP section behind the stage. Not that I’m Hollywood or anything, but I do like taking advantage of the bar with easier access & sitting down for a few minutes every now and then. Earlier in [...]
